Hindsight is 20/20. And this is exactly what I was referring to when I stated that fans tend to overvalue draft picks. Look, I'm not saying that draft picks aren't important (and you wouldn't find a single football fan that would agree with that sentiment), but when you're assessing the value of certain draft picks, you need to assess the risks associated with not choosing one of the above players.

Lets have some fun with this. You're listing a handful of guys available after our 3rd round picks in each of the recent drafts, which by the way consists of four rounds and 32 picks per round (for simplicity sake I'm not counting the effect of compensatory picks on the overall totals). That's 128 picks (after the 3rd round) of which, any given team would have 4 (again, generally speaking). You've listed about 10 guys per draft that would be considered studs (that's generous for some of the names listed above) based on their draft status.

What are the chances we're hitting on one of those 10 guys you've listed as opposed to the other 118 guys with our 4 remaining draft picks? Do you like those odds? I don't. And that's the point.

If you can get a proven commodity, which Anquan Boldin definitively is, for the cost of a 3rd round pick then you do it and you don't look back.

And my original point was that with every passing round it becomes less likely that draft pick will be a starter for years to come and more likely that player will be the next Eddie Moore or Derek Hagan.

People HIGHLY over value draft picks.

In the end a draft pick equals a PLAYER. So why would you not take a proven player, star at his position, over a player who has maybe a 5% chance of becoming the player you could have had by giving up the same pick.

I hear you that the odds are less, but that's not my problem, they are out there, find them...that's Tuna's, Ireland, and the whole scouting departments job, you need to hit on your draft picks bottom line...there is value and honestly alot of starter that come out of the third round and later...they need to make it happen....

this year's third round is a good pick, I'd be mad if they didnt get a starter out of it....your talking an upper half 3rd rounder.......

See, thats where I disagree with you. I think if we grab a starter NT, and a serviceable ILB in the draft, we are set.

I mean we have to think where our problems were last year. We got torched by TEs up the middle, and we gave up the big play via our rookie safeties, and an FS playing out of position, who got better as the year progressed. Our WR play was sub-par and needed an upgrade. Add onto that the fact that a good chunk of our starters were playing hurt, or on IR (Ronnie most notably), and there you go.

So that being said, we really only need a major adjustment to 3 positions to correct our most glaring issues that plagued us throughout the year last year. And that is NT (after losing Ferg, who we probably won't get back), ILB (their play was absolutely awful last year), and #1 WR.

We shore those up and we've got a competing team next year that can very well take it to the house.

I think we've gotten through our rebuilding years. We're ready to contend with just a few tweaks. There are so many positives about this team going into next season, I just think that if we grab Boldin and make the other moves properly we're set.

The bottom line is that if we're not contending in the next 2 years, there are FAR worse issues with this organization than a #3 Draft pick could fix.

It's not that I don't see your point (or, don't agree with you) FPL. But, it's not just about the pick vs. a proven commodity. Money, age, character, injury concerns are all equally important factors IMO. I know I'm going back 'n forth here, but it's by no means a slam dunk, to me anyway. And, at the end of the day...this is all just pure speculation anyway.

In any walk of life, you get what you pay for.

I'm not sure how you could expect to acquire a #1 WR for anything less than a 3rd rounder, unless of course your banking on drafting the next Marques Colston -- but you could be waiting years to hit on a pick like that, with the odds squarely in favor of it never happening.

I build through the draft. However if you offer me a proven star player for a 3rd rounder or less, at a position I have a glaring need at, yes I will take it.

Also the chances of finding the core of your team from the 4th round on are so extremely small, that no I don't see that as a viable way of building a team.

If it were that easy every team would be doing it.

What are they supposed to accomplish?

Every team is doing it, this isn't baseball were you alot happens in free agency, why in the NFL is the trade deadline a bust?? how often do u see NFL teams trading proven players for picks?? rarely....y? cuz when you draft a good player, you arent getting rid of them, unless you are wowed (or stupid like Oakland) by an offer, and proven star as you put it, doesnt get back a 3rd...why do u trade a proven star for a number of picks?? to get more picks to do what? draft the core of your teams, draft picks are important as anything to an NFL team.....

Miami has had a track record of trading good draft picks away for players, alot of playoff wins it has gotten them huh? Dante Culpepper was a proven player at the time right??

To build the core of your team....a young core for players, unlike baseball where you are good until mid-35 alot of the time....i.e. Jeter, your best days as a skilled player erode after the 30....then you sprinkle a playmaker in via FA or a trade, but once that core is set....kinda like the pats did with Moss, or the Jets with Edwards or for that matter Sanchez....is our core set Pads?

So two teams in the league, the Patriots and Saints, acquire a #1 WR through a deal or draft pick less valuable than our current 3rd rounder and suddenly its the only way to go?

Do you care to look at the rest of the teams in the league that have a legitimate #1 WR on their roster and examine how they acquired them? Hint: from your view, its not going to be pretty.

I'm not jaded by anything other than the numbers. I would recommend that you do some simple analysis of the probabilities of some of the things you're trumpeting actually occuring. I would expect it to be a pretty sobering experience.

What is "build the core of your team" supposed to accomplish.

The purpose of Draft Choices is to improve your team at a lower cost than signing FA's in a typical FA cycle, the reason why FA's are paid so much more than non #1 picks is...they have proven they can play in a "Show Me" league.

I'd be happy if they traded for Boldin, even happier if they gave him a contract extension, he has "Shown Me" and it's not my money, any possible third rd pick is merely a theoritical, experts and gurus can say whatever they want to about whomever is taken, but the bottom line is, they are all "tell me" and no "Show me".

If every team is doing it, why are the same teams in the same position every year? Such as Detroit.

Also the issue with Culpepper, as I stated before, was rushing him back from a knee injury you could see was still bothering him, more than anything else.

Should the Saints have just drafted a QB instead of signing Brees? Seeing as FA and trades are for losers.

Anquan Boldin is a malcontent? Sure, he's complained about his contract (and has a legitimate gripe, by the way), but to compare him to likes of a Randy Moss is flat out laughable.

The guy had his face broken last season and was back to playing football in a matter of weeks. There's very few WRs in this league who are as tough or as committed as Anquan Boldin.

In how many of those instances where you marked "draft" were those players selected higher than the 3rd round??

And that's even ignoring how the guys who were traded entered the league -- Moss and Edwards were both 1st rounders.

I seriously doubt Culpepper's knee is still bothering him...why cant he get on anywhere? Ohh he sucks that right

No the Saints did the right thing, they signed a top flight person in his given skilled position, i.e. QB/WR/RB when he hit free agency, something that rarely rarely happens, how often do top five QB/WR/RB's ever hit the open market??

Lastly your first point is totally wrong, the NFL year in and year out has more teams each year, different teams year to year that are in the playoff hunt, the det, cleveland, st. louis's of the world are the minority....

dude I'm not saying I want Miami to draft a WR in the 3rd!!!! Just this overwhelming majority of drafted WR's that are considered number 1, is a small example, you could take almost every position look at their number 1's and a large majority of them will be drafted....that's just fact, and the way it is in the NFL.....

brother man there is nothing more I want for this team to have a legit number one receiver...my point is if your going to do it, get a legit number one....Boldin is nice, but he scares me with the age, and injuries....if he was uninjured I would even say do it, but its both, once u have injuries, age makes them never go away...dude we need to have beer come down to RI, take the sled!!

Let's examine this, look at the #1 picks in the list:

Ginn, Evans, Edwards (top 5) AJ (top 5), Massaquoi is not worth mentioning, Ocho was a #2, not sure about Ward.

#1's..Wayne, Bowe, Heyward Bey, Hester is a converted Db.

    2 FA's, Jax #2, BM #3, Smith #2, Jennings #3 small college.

    #1's CJ, White, Crabtree, Fitz,

Smith was a #2, Colston a #6, Stl not worth talking about.

If anything FY, most of the names on your list were #1, sometimes top 5, picks, or #2's, 3rd round picks or later for a #1 wr is the exception not the rule, if anything your list details the unlikelihood of landing a #1 Wr with a 3rd rd or later pick!

So from a value standpoint, if we land Boldin for a #3 the Dolphins are way ahead of the game.

I'm not talking about drafting a WR in this draft ever, I'm on record all over this site and various threads, as being against drafting any WR this year....your analysis was a waste of time in that (and I mean that respectfully Pads) however it proves my point clearly that of the value of picks, any picks and hitting on them.....what does it matter small college or unsigned, it isnt my job or ours to draft picks, its theirs, they need to hit on them....but you will grab the majority of your starters, and playmaking talent through the draft....getting a playmaking WR through a trade is a luxary, one that should be done when the core of your team is...unless Marshall becomes available, then u trade for him asap.....cuz he is 25, dominant, and can grow with henne who is 26...

History would lead me to believe that the ones complaining then would be the ones that are complaining now. They'll be the ones dying to say "I told you so".

The vast majority of the people who favor bringing in Boldin for a 3rd have stated that the potential injury risk is worth the 3rd. In other words, they're ready to accept that possibility and are less likely to complain if it does happen.

But never made demands or let it affect his play or practice. He and most everybody else recognized that he is way under paid relative to his production. Arizona was just in a position that they had an even better #1 and another guy who was ready to move up. He was in a bad situation to ever improve his financial position. He is the guy who should have been complaining and demanding a trade. Yet nobody in Arizona has anything bad to say about him b/c he's been professional about it all. He is the opposite of a problem child. He is the guy that let himself be screwed over by the organization without complaint.

I would trade our 3rd round pick for Boldin in a heartbeat. We drafted a wide receiver in the 3rd round last year who couldn't even sniff the field.

Why not trade for a proven star? Yeah, he's 30. He has at least 3 good seasons ahead of him. For a team, considered by most to be "very close"...PULL THE TRIGGER.

I did not want Boldin last year because of the cost. Now, I do as the best available option, with a reduced cost. The injuries are less than Ronnie's, who I also want back.

Maybe, just maybe, they will both be healthy, and we will have a VG O.
