Did not see this one coming. Should be fun to watch Ariza and "Special K" chuck all game, unless they're one-upping themselves by including Ariza and that dumb contract they gave him in this deal... it'd be a pretty nice swap because they're both terrible. Marc Stein of BSPN is reporting via Twitter that this deal may very well expand into a three way (pause) that lands McGrady in New York!

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4923777

I would really like to see Martin and Ariza on the same team; both shoot whether open or not constantly, and both shoot under 40% from the field!!!!! That's just awesome.

    Sorry, Knicks... Woj reporting:

To Sacramento: Tracy McGrady, Joey Dorsey, Carl Landry
To Houston: Kevin Martin, Kenny Thomas, Sergio Rodriguez, Hilton Armstrong

Hooray for watching Martin and Ariza compete against each other for shots!

    Uh, contested shots.

Carl Landry is without question the best player in this deal.

Both woj and stein reported that landing t-rash in NY is the goal. The Kings dont want him around, they want Tyreke Evans handling the ball. McGrady eventually lands with the Knicks before the deadline tomorrow imo

Also, Martin usually isnt such a bad shooter, hes just never had a rhythm with Evans. The last few years hes shot: 42, 45.6, and 47.3 from the floor.

seems like everyone got what they wanted out of this deal.

Houston gets Martin Hill n the picks they were insisting on all week

NY gets the cap space they badly needed although they did give in and get rid of Hill n the picks when they were reluctant to all week but its worth it to dump jefferies

Sac got a good cheap young player in Landry although it seems they should of been able to get more for Martin

hill is awful anyway so far so no loss there.

My July 1 phone call to lebron:
Hi Lebron, its Donnie Walsh from the knicks. Would you like Chris bosh, amare stoudamire, dirk, or Joe Johnson to be your new teammate? :)

Actually the call is more like:

"Lebron, It's Donnie Walsh, we are waiting to see who the Miami Heat doesn't want so that we can offer a contract"

My money is on Lebron/Joe Johnson. Amare is a possibility if Miami doesn't want him.

imo it won't be Jj cause the knicks have a ton of wing players. it will be amare or bosh with an outside chance at dirk.

No chance whatsoever at Dirk. he is resigning.

Miami will have their choice between Bosh and Amare. I know Riley loves Bosh..so Amare will be a good addition to play with lebron.

Tax incentives alone on a 85 million dollar deal makes miami the prime location for any free agent. let alone the city, weather, women, and the roster that will be better.

Going to be a great re-birth of the Heat-Knicks rivalry.

I do miss hating the heat. While my hate for the bulls will never change as they have forever cemented themselves in to "jets status" I like Dwayne wade too much to hate the heat the way I use to. I'm sure that will change again soon :)

Still don't understand why everyone assumes Bron is leaving Cle. Good chance to win the title this year - already has HUGE sponsorship deals in Cleveland (and we recently struck a deal with a Chinese marketing firm to market him across seas).

Why would Bron leave that to start over on a team like the Knicks that would have bare bones other than he and one other star?

If you want to argue about the Nets I get it - but NY? Why?

MY OPINION is that he is not leaving. I think he stays in Cleveland.

But the conventional wisdom and the anectdotal evidence is that he is.

well I mean its not like cavs have a great supporting cast. Mo Williams is good but not irreplaceable. Verajo is average. Jamison will help but if it doesn't get done this year them IMO he will look at being able to pick a teammate of his choice to
Come with him to NY and have a couple of good young players like danilo gallinari and Wilson Chandler who talent wise exceed anything Cleveland has after mo and jamison. Plus I believe the knicks will have their MLE to add to their depth. Its basically allowing lebron be GM to a degree.

    You know what is hilarious?

and why ONE player in the NBA makes a huge difference..

If the 4-168 Nets signed Lebron James and did NOTHING else...they would be instant contenders on paper.

really....look at their roster...not bad for a young team. They just have a hard time scoring more points than their opponents every night. lol

I say Mo Williams and Jamison are better than Gallo and Chandler. By far. After that we have Varejao and Hickson who aren't superstars but Varejao is a GREAT defender and Hickson has a lot of potential.

Not sure Gallo and Chandler plus Amar'e are enough of an improvement to make it worth leaving the best team in the NBA. I guess that is my point. I think other teams are going to have to make a HUGE case for him to leave rather than the Cavs for him to stay.

Here, he has one of the top 3 teams in the league over the last few years. He has a GM who has turned scrubs into valuable pieces and an owner who is more willing to spend money than anyone in the league. Another team is going to have to show that it is a no-brainer for him to leave.

I can't believe more people don't talk about this.

It is exactly what I am saying with Cleveland - sure you take away Bron and they are HORRIBLE - but it is because they are built to have role players around Bron.

It seems the Nets did it backwards - they went out and got all of the role players before the super star. If you added Bron or Wade to that team they are incredible.

Cleveland is doing it with the old Riley formula.

Rebounding + Defense + Good 3 pt. Shooting + One goto guy = Championship.

He hasn't flopped almost at all since they changed the rule. Watch a few Cavs games - he started out as a flopper and flailer - but he has refined his game to become much better.

His new trick is to jump straight up and down with his arms extended straight up when someone is driving. There was a rule change to allow this but he still gets called for it all the time.

You don't have to sell me on Varejao. I like him as a player. But he is annoying as hell.

When Wade dunked that ball down his throat here in Miami...it was a great day in sports history.

But amare or bosh is better then jamison. Gallo and Chandler are better then mo and verajao and are still growing as players. And this assumes the knicks don't find a way to keep lee in the mix.
Better supporting cast = better shot at championship.

Well I admit he is a lot better now than he was, but when he held out I wished they would have just let him stay in brazil and put the money elsewhere.

They have a very nice building block with Lopez, Harris, Yi, CDR, and Courtney Lee.

If the Nets land LBJ, Wade, Bosh, or Amare they'll be very good. I think even Joe Johnson or Rudy Gay makes them a playoff team.

Nets will be decent in a year or two, IMO, regardless of what moves they make.

If they win the lottery and land John Wall, then they'll be back in the playoffs as early as next season as a low seed.

If there's a better flopper than Vlade, I haven't seen him.

If you read Bill Simmons' Book of Basketball, there's a fantastic story about Dave Cowens going bonkers on a dude who flopped. Some dude flopped and drew a foul on Cowens. Cowens was incredulous, and on the next trip down, Cowens sprinted at full speed, hip checked the dude into the 3rd row, and shouted to the ref "now THAT'S a ****ing foul!!!!"

I think, though I'm not 100% sure, they have to renounce Lee's rights to get the space for 2 max contracts.

You're right that Chandler and Galinari are good building blocks and quality potential teammates for LBJ. I will add that there's some stat inflation there, due to the fast-paced Knicks offense, but still, they're quality players, and if you're considering age, you'll take them over Williams and Varejao 10 times out of 10.

However, they're both more natural 3s...which happens to be James' best position. Even assuming that they sign Bosh or Stoudemire to man the 4, having three of your players play the same position isn't exactly a recipe for winning basketball. I guess they could put James at the 2, but that's going to be a terrible defensive team. What's more, they're probably resigned to filling out the roster with minimum salary guys if they sign LBJ and Bosh (or Stoudemire). If they could flip Chandler for a point guard with an outside shot, they might be well advised to do that. James would be doing most of the ballhandling, so an According to Hoyle point isn't crucial.

I remain skeptical that he will bolt Cleveland. We've seen one max contract free agent bolt his former team: Shaq. That's it. The Cavs have built a team around him designed to complement his skills; I'm not convinced the Knicks can do that, not in one offseason, anyway. There would have to be a certain amount of patience by James while the Knicks assembled pieces around him.

Now, if James is looking down the road, he's absolutely better off ditching Cleveland for the Knicks. That seems absurd to say, but here we are. Jamison is 33, Shaq is on his last legs, ditto Ilgauskas, Varejao has platueaed as a player, ditto Williams, and the Cavs are going to be capped out indefinitely if James resigns. Not much room for improvement there unless JJ Hickson is as good as the Cavs seem to think.
