Hopefully he didn't get to buff and not be able to get around on the ball quick enough or not have as more flexibility with his muscles now.

Santos will IMO be in AAA and thole and Coste in AA. Blanco and barajas will probably be the everyday guys. Blanco caught Perez when ollie had his one good season in san Diego so that should be ollies personal catcher.

The whole "personal catcher" thing is absurd 95% of the time. It has been proven to have no effect on a pitcher's stats. For instance, it was laughable to me that the Braves repeatedly sat Javy Lopez, an All-Star, in favor of Eddie Perez, just because Greg Maddux wanted Perez behind the plate.

However, Ollie is just crazy enough to believe that having Blanco there somehow makes a difference that it might actually be valuable.

I agree with you but santana and perez like him so this has 60-40 split written on it.

Any "Supernatural" fans here? If so, am I nuts, or could he be Jensen Ackles' (Dean Winchester) stunt double?

mets signed kiko calero since kelvim escobar is probably starting the year on the DL. Calero had a 2ish era last year.

Ike Davis is going to win the 1st base job.

The guy is hitting the hell out of the ball.

F Martinez is hitting the ball well also.

I'm hoping Ike forces their hand but I'm betting he starts the year in AAA for just a bit more seasoning vs lefties.

I really hope Fernando takes the cf job from pagan and Matthews. Matthews is trash who should never see the home dugout at citi when I go opening day.

David Lennon said 1-7 weeks on SNY, probably closer to two weeks unless the mets are overly cautious where they dont have to be.

On a different note, Pelfrey needs a good infield behind him and now hes got Alex Cora who has no range and Luis Castillo who has less then no range. Not a good combination.

Hey Met's fans....why are you sending Ike Davis down to the minors? He's batting .480 with 3 homer and 10 RBI's, and you are keeping Murphy at first base with his .130 average?

    From Rotoworld, per adam rubin:
According to ESPNNewYork's Adam Rubin, Bobby Parnell and Sean Green are both expected to open the season at Triple-A Buffalo.
Rubin believes Hisanori Takahashi and Nelson Figueroa will make the final roster, leaving one spot for either Jenrry Mejia or Kiko Calero. Rubin also said that Chris Coste has been placed on waivers. If he is not claimed, Rubin expects him to accept an assignment to Triple-A.

    This made me laugh.....

Quote of the day: Mike Pelfrey, punching bag

Tue Mar 30,2010 10:05 AM ET By D.J. Short

It's only 10am, but hang with me here. Jeff Francoeur just appeared on the "Boomer & Carton Show" on WFAN in New York and he unveiled an interesting strategy to get Mike Pelfrey to step up his intensity this season:
"I think what I'm going to do before each start is just go up and just punch him in the face."

Knowing Frenchy, he would probably just swing and miss, only to punch Jose Reyes in the thyroid, so a pinch-hitter is probably in order here.

(Thanks for MetsBlog for the heads up)

CBS Sportline player update states The Bergen Record reports that Mets closer Francisco J. Rodriguez has left the country to attend to a personal matter and might not be back by opening day.

    http://gtsi2001.baseball.cbssports....francisco-j-rodriguez?tag=newstabs;288981:all

No one knows exactly where K-Rod has gone, but you have to assume he's back in his home country of Venezuela taking care of some business.

I dont see it on The Bergen Record online site.....who knows.

The New York Daily News reports that Mets closer Francisco J. Rodriguez has gone home to Venezuela to be with a family member who was involved in a serious car crash. He might not be back by opening day.

I posted this in the Yankees thread but figured I'd post here too but ESPN.com opened up ESPNnewyork.com today. I know they have at least Adam Rubin covering the Mets now doing a Met blog and writing articles for them, as well as chats. Just thought I'd pass this info to you guys since I love ESPNboston, which I feel is much better than any of the local Boston papers in terms of news and stories.

    Thanks Ray.

    Some Mets news:
-Murphy probably out 2-6 weeks with a sprained MCL/bruised knee. Mike Jacobs who I think I like more anyway is starting opening day in all probability.
-Beltran is ahead of schedule supposedly according to David lennon of Newsday. Hes looking at early-mid may return.
-K-Rod flew to venezuela to tend to his brother who was in a bad car accident. Hes not supposed to miss opening day but with this team, who bloody knows.
-The last roster spot is still up for grabs between Catalanatto and Chris Carter. Carter has I think 5 homers in around 30 AB's this spring but his defense is supposedly awful while Catalanatto doesnt have nearly the power but has a lot more versatility to offer. I think id go with Cat but with with Jerry/Omar...again who knows?
-If this team brings Mejia north as a reliever theyre making a huge mistake. That spot should be Parnell's. I was watching the game for a bit on Tuesday and Mejia's curveballs end up around the batters neck. His mechanics are way off. No need to rush a 20 year old. His cutter cuts two ways and its a devastating pitch...at least on the level of Leiter's cutter, potentially better but he badly needs another pitch.
-I love that Jon Niese is looking like a #3 and pitching very well. He's a player I have liked for a long time. The only problem is he's actually been named the Mets #3 ahead of Perez and Maine. The starting pitching on this team could be ugly. I have zero faith in Perez. Maine I like a lot but he lacks an out pitch as he always has so he will walk a ton of guys and give you 5 and a 1/3rd in all his outings. Pelfrey still lacks a third picth as well but hes starting to look better. I dont know if thats a reflection on the rest of the staff or what lol.
-Why is Castillo still here?

Carter's defense is awful but he can certainly hit, at least in the minors.

I agree with you about Mejia being on the opening day roster, especially in the pen. This is a kid who is 20 years old and could possibly be a very good #2 or even an ace why would you screw with his development like that? Especially putting him in the pen at the start of the season, it would be a such a waste. If I was running the team, I'd have him starting in the minors and if he's still blowing away guys in the summer then I'd call him up to the ML as a starter or if he's close to his innings limit, then I'd throw him in the pen to get some experience getting ML hitters out. No reason to rush this kid especially since this team isn't looking like a contender right now. This move just screams to me like a panic move to try and save some peoples' jobs.

exactly. Not to mention he's simply not ready. He has one pitch that breaks two ways (his cutter), one pitch still developing that he swears is a slider that acts like a splitter and a curve that doesn't break right and lacks control. To me it screams sell high and trade him for a starter who can help you now or at the very least send him down.

They also say its the best team chemistry in years.

If we can stay healthy, who knows.

The biggest part of the Mets' struggles last year was injuries. So I agree, if they stay healthy and get enough out of the 2-5 spots in the rotation, they could be in it in the end. I think the offense is better than people give them credit for.

    LMAO such a hater. :pointlol:

It was a fun game to be ill tell you that. Had seats with a friend of mine in CF about 8 rows up. Just about a perfect view. I still miss shea but the food here is infinitely better. Nothing better then opening day of baseball season...aside from opening day of football season :shifty:

Santana looked sharp today, especially for opening day.
    Bay busted out a triple.
Wright went opposite field off notorious Met killer Josh Johnson.
Cora and Castillo still make me cry when I see them batting 1-2. Get Ruben Tejada in there ASAP.
Fernando Nieve looked good in his two innings of relief.
Frenchy's arm is shot. He only threw a beachball 3 feet before the wind knocked it down. :wink2:
This team may have to score 7 runs every game to have a good year. The only thing that scares me more then the relievers are the starters after Johan. Maine should be ok but hes a 5-6inning guy with no out pitch so he racks up high pitch counts. I like Niese but who knows, its his first full year after all. Perez and Pelfrey...again who knows.

The Marlins were definitely in full spring training mode with three errors in the 6th.

    Alex. Cora. 2 million. dollars.

Remember when I told you guys we needed to sell out to get Hunter Pence when he was available last year?

hey..at least we have OB monster Jeff Francoer.

Hunter Pence is nothing special, I actually like Francoeur more. We need a damn #2 starter and probably a 3 too to be a viable postseason contender.

The only reason Cora got his money is because the Mets view him as a future manager. Expect to see him there for a while longer. Could do worse as reserve 2b/ss. I mean I'd rather pay him 2M then Luis Castillo 6M. At least cora has some range.

Yeah when Lee is healthy maybe? Last I heard Lee was on the DL. Halladay was filthy today and the Phillies easily could have scored 20 runs on the Nat's. Howard left the bases loaded in the 4th or 5th inning, and there were also many other guys LOB in scoring position. Well everyone should score off the Nats. All the Philly bloggers crying about Lee being dealt away have gotten strangely quiet. Good win today Met's fans....we'll see you at Coor's Field next week...the Rocks are looking good.

LMAO nice bro. Some people like expired milk too. Pence is nothing special. I dont consider an average defensive player who hits 20/80 to be special. Not that francoeur is much better but IMO he has the potential to be better.

Lee is 3 years younger, pitched amazing in the postseason where Halladay is still a question mark and he wanted to stay there. lets be honest here, the only reason he was dealt was because the Phillies knew he would want a longer deal for more money.

    He averages (Hunter Pence) 34 2B's 25 HR's 86 RBI's on .828 OPS.

    Francoer averages 34 2B's 20 HR's 92 RBI's on .743 OPS.

Pence actually has a higher Fielding percentage for his career, although Francoer is probably overall better defensively.
