Funny thing is, the way the Jets off-season moves reminds me of the DonĀ“s last stand in 95 when we assembled like 19 former first round picks and were the off-season Super Bowl favourite. In the end we barely made the playoffs and got stomped by the Bills in the Wildcard-round. Contrary to the Jets: We had a QB...

True but they didn't win anything that year. Correct me if I'm wrong here but they won a couple Super Bowls with guys like Deion Branch, David Givens and Troy Brown as their top targets. They also won a Super Bowl with Antowain Smith at running back.

If not winning anything is going 16-0, winning the AFC east, AFC championship and just falling short of the superbowl, well then ill take it. The phins havint even been anywhere near that in years.

You're right, they won something. I should have specified they didn't win the Super Bowl, their ultimate goal. They won without Moss, didn't they?

    they swapped a 1200yd rusher for a 700yd rusher.
Traded for a CB whose afraid to tackle.
Traded for a WR whose going to miss 4 games due to suspension.
    Traded away their best Safety.
And are in such dire need of a pass rush that they're trying to steal Jason Taylor away from us. A 34 yr old OLB.

    Color me unimpressed.

The missing part of that formula is, so far we haven't drafted well. How many wasted picks so far. Color me unimpressed with our FO's drafting. It hasn't been terrible, but it hasn't been stellar either.

The voice or Reason. Muck had posted a great reply in another thread that was very in depth and thought out.

If you had read any of the Jets boards after they beat SD in the playoffs all of the Jet fans were making fun of Cromartie hard core. He was the Butt of most of their Jokes and he laid an egg in their playoff game and showed his complete lack of guts.

LT? As you already pointed out he was a trade down in talent.

Holmes has a lot of talent. If it was me I would have loved for us to get him for a 5th round pick. So he's the only pickup of not and he will miss the first 4 games and is one failed drug test from a years suspension. SO lets not forget there is significant risk there.

We have to be patient and see who the off season works itself out before we pass judgment.

Agreed.....while they have indeed brought in a handful of nice players, their personnel acquisitions on a whole thus far, haven't exactly put us on the road to a SB.

In the end, I see this FO making us a respectable team, nothing more... they will have to really hit it out of the park in this draft to change my mind.

rushing yards aside thomas jones put up 29 TD's in the last two seasons
    27 rushing 2 receiving
how do you replace that type of production?

Looking at their roster, seeing how it all came together, i wouldn't exactly say the Saints were/are much better than decent. They just have Drew Brees, which is all it came down to.

Which is why this team will go as far as Henne does. It's a little scary to put all the hopes and dreams on one player like that but the truth of the matter is that this a QBs league now more than ever.

the saints were 8-8 in 2008 and missed the playoffs when drew brees threw for 5069 yards with the same offense he had in 2009

i would love to know what actually made the difference in 2009 :wink2:

mostly Darren Sharper. whom is still available...Their defense got very good at turnovers and that literally changed the entire team. But overall i stand by my point, their team isn't phenomenal. It's not loaded with talent or superstars. Their decent.

so a decent team can win the SB
if they add a new D coordinator
win the turnover battle during the season and make a big play with their defense in the SB
    interesting

I never said teams can't win without the big time sign during the offseason. I simply said that no one can say the patriots have gone an offseason without signing multiple big name players like the article said they had. What i said and what you are arguing are two different things.

screw that. I would rather go 8-8, barely get in as a wildcard, barely squeak by our playoff opponents and win the Super Bowl on a fluke field goal. 2007 PATRIOTS were merely the best ever losers

Of course, im almost certain any fan would take a SB championship anyday regardless of record over losing it after having previously been undefeated. However, what i was saying is that a season like the patriots had then would be a major upgrade over anything the dolphins have had in a very long time. So i wouldnt be overly dissapointed.

This is clearly the one major flaw the jets have had this whole entire offseason. I was just as impressed with shonn greene in the playoffs last year as anyone else but i still do not understand the logic behind giving up thomas jones for LT basically.

The Jets are moving into a new stadium, trying to sell seat licenses, trying to get the fans into a frezy as the new digs open. Isnt it obvious?

IMO They have more talent on offense than any team in the league, and Sean Payton is a phenomenal playcaller w/ a quasi-head coach for a QB. Colston is a solid possession WR, Henderson stretches the field, Meachem does both. Shockey is a mismatch for most LBs and Safeties. Ditto for Reggie Bush. Pirre Thomas is underrated. Thier OLine is on the line between good and very good. Offensively, they lack for nothing and have no weaknesses whatsoever. All they need is a semi-cometent defense and theyre a threat to win it all.

    Very well-written column by Hyde.

The Jets were already quite good. We knew that. But as we've talked about on these boards, the consistent power players build thru the draft.

Even the Jets were largely built thru the draft (prior to Ryan's arrival).

To me this basiocally proves that outstanding QB play is not enough on its own. It's essential but you need more. Nothing's more irritating than sports talking heads constantly pretending that QBs win Super Bowls. It's like an engine, if one part is really good it won't matter if the rest are broken. This isn't basketball or baseball.

Or when your defense can actually make a stop every now and then. Between 2008 and 2009 Brees was a common denominator. The difference was clearly defensive play. Proof positive that great QBs don't win Super Bowls by themselves like everybody would have you believe.

    Excellent point!!!!

We arguably landed the #2 defensive free agent and the #1 offensive free agent.
