    Well away from here
Here is a video I put together quickly showing a good number of Jared Odrick's plays against LSU and Michigan.

    He is #91.

Please note the video will improve after a little time goes by.

    Have at it:

We all liked him as a prospect and he is a good player. We had him going higher than that but we have been interested in him. We reported that in one fo the first SS blogs.......we even have a tweet conversation with him where we ask him directly about us and him.

Kind of funny looking back at what his reaction was. Liek how did we know that.......funny. We thought he was being cute.

I thought the trade down was a masterpiece because it gave us more picks, but the pick itself I thought was disappointing. I damn near died when Spiller went to Buffalo and Dan Williams was picked just before us.

I think Jared Odrick is talented but will be a project player and he was taken too high. (IMHO)

I'm just glad we have another defender. Obviously this kid fits the bill for what we are looking for in a defensive lineman. I don't think we'll look back and regret this pick. I'm very curious who we get early tomorrow. Jason Worilds anyone?

I don't really know what to think. From the video he looks like he has a good motor and shows good pursuit. His block shedding is also good as is his vision of the field, but I think he is very raw and will take time to develop. This pick was the brides maid - not the bride. We could have done better.

I just did some homework on this guy. He had an arrest back in March and suffered a season ending ankle injury last year. He was supposed to be a 2nd rounder but......

    What'd you expect brother?

Its basically a 2nd round pick.

We almost traded right out of the first rnd to pick up a 2nd rounder and drop down in the 4th/lose a 6th for the Lber.

I saw the writting on the wall when I heard it was a trade with San Diego.

Nothing is ever certain, but when your picking this far down your basically picking someone you've done some homework on.

What makes me nervous is when they say things like "we arent sure if he's going to play NT or DE right now"

WTF? You pick a guy this high in the draft and you dont know? Thats something you say about a 3rd-4th round guy, not your first pick of the day.

I betcha we gambled on trading down hoping that Dan Williams was going to be there and lost him. I was secretly pulling for Williams all along. I think we'll do LB's tomorrow. I can't wait!!

Yeah it was funny going 1-15 a few years ago with an 'NFL staff' too. lol

Dont mean to sound too jerky, just mean that we all have opinions and even these guys that get paid to do it arent always right.

Sometimes those who dont get paid might know something about the game too.

Not to sound like a trader or anything, but I liked the Jets pick a lot. I would have loved to get Kyle Wilson for our DB.

My wish list for tomorrow is .....

    Golden Tate
    Sean Lee
    Taylor Mays

I honestly thought he'd drop too so I cant totally trash this pick and I wont.

I sure as hell didnt want to pick him at 12.

Sometimes you just gotta gamble. They picked up a 2nd in this so really what you have to gauge it by is whether anyone picked from 12 on to our pick out plays who we got in the late 1st and 2nd round. (yes, both because we essentially traded our #12 for 2 picks).

If they have a great career then we lost.

If they have a decent but not a great career, and the two dudes we got have decent careers, then its a wash and we did right by getting 2 guys instead of one.

If our 2 guys (or even just one) plays lights out then we won.

Its a gamble that has yet to play itself out and we dont have a time traveling DeLorean  to see whats the future holding for us.

After the shock wear off I think we'll be OK. He is very talented with a frame that he can bulk muscle on. Give him an off season in the weight room and a little skill development and he'll be OK. I don't think we'll regret the pick.

I agree just because they are employed on a NFL team doesnt make them smart decision makers.
That said, i like this pick alot. Large versatile player that will be a starter and can spell at nose on 3rd down(maybe full time in the future). As for this regimes picks I trust em a good bit. Besides the White pick look at our first two rounds the past two yrs. 4 out of 5 starters, Long, Henne, Davis, Smith not a bad track record IMO.

Its an interesting pick considering we have 3 DEs already (Starks, Langford and Merling) and 4 if you count McDaniels. Where does he fit? Hes a bit small for NT, and the front office didnt say he was brought in specifically for that spot.

I wonder if they may be looking to see if Phil Merling can make a move to OLB and have Langford/Starks at DE with Oddrick rotating in and playing NT on passing downs.

Conu, what role do you see him playing for us upon first inspection, and what do you think this pick says about the existing DL players?

Dude is non stop and will play right away. As a NT, if they bulk him up, he can do just what a 3/4 NT is supposed to do. CLOG the middle of the field, and get some push to go with it.

Watch that video and you don't see a ton of plays right? Watch again and you see a lot of double teams. That's what we want.

As a DE, he is already the right size and he's been a solid run stuffer but I think NT is where he'll prosper...

He seems to get great push, uses his hands well, and gets of blocks really well. He doesn't flop or get run over a lot of the time and hold his ground. His lateral quickness is a little painful to watch though; he reminds me of a 3-4 DE version of what Matt Roth was for us. He will do his job and everything asked of him, but won't be able to take over or dominate a game as a DE (but then again how many 3-4 DE's do?). I would grade this pick a B-. I really, really wanted to see Hughes in a Dolphins uniform, but we dont always get our wish.

The biggest thing about this pick that i don't get is our defensive line depth. We have two solid starters in Kendall Langford, Randy Starks. Two solid back-ups in Phillip Merling and Tony McDaniel. We have a project player in Ikaika Alama-Francis. At DT we have Paul Soliai and Jason Ferguson (who is gone the first 8 games), Tony McDaniel can also play the nose in the 3-4 though. Our DL rotation minus our Nose Tackle position is both solid and youthful. I know people said we are probably going to trade Merling now, and I now believe we will if we can get any compensation for him, but still a 3-4 DE was not a need. I see Odrick playing but its frustrating when you draft a player who will only see the field a few times a game because theres a log-jam at the DE position and I just don't know if he can play the Nose. I mean its great we willl be able to sub our guys out and keep them healthy, active and giving 110% effort the entire game, but in a 3-4 allignment you only have 3 D-Lineman on the field at a time... How much quality depth do you need??? Plus all the depth in the world is ineffective when the offense runs a No-Huddle, which more offenses are doing now a days.

Look for Merling to make the move to SOLB, a position I thought he should have been playing from the very start.

I recall hearing rumors about him losing weight in the off season.

Merling will have to lose a lot of weight
Have you seen the size of his back side lately
    I don't see him as a LB
The Odrick pick reminds me a lot of when we took Merling
only now we are trying to rebuild the original rebuild
makes no sense at all to me

Glad I slept on it. I was initially disappointed but after hearing about this kid I think he fits the mold well and we need plenty of help! High motor, strong, with a big frame. I betcha in two or three years he'll be the starting NT. NT's almost always take time to develop and he seems a good fit.

Can you guys believe Kindle fell out of the first all together??? That was a shocker to me... Wonder if we'll take him if he's still there at 40?

The trade was a steal IMHO!

I think he will be a NT in time. Maybe not right away as it does take time to learn the position. But, he can be worked into the rotation as a DE without there being an issue I would imagine.

He's not an elite penetrator, but he does create some when needed, he does do a good job at the point of attack and generates a decent level of pop on initial contact. The big thing for Odrick are his hands; they are fast powerful and they rarely stop moving.

I think that is off the mak. Nolan has had a weak side DE at 285 lbs for the past two stops in SF and Denver. Merling was aksed to shed 10 lbs....that measn he would be at 285 lbs; the same as both Holliday and Justin Smith. Merling wasn't asked to lose weight to move, but to fit the defense well.

That "myth" for lack of a better word was dispelled a while ago in the SS Blog. Obviously I could be off, but asking a guy to get to 285 lbs doesn't signal linebacker; it signals coaching and scheme change. Noaln wants him to be able to get up the field a bit more than before. Which is fine.

Odrick is the future NT we have all been asking about. Thats where I see him going.
