The problem is, we have three players at QB right now that are better than Pat White. Which one do you want to get rid of to keep Pat White?
Exactly. He eats up one precious roster spot, and the odds are historically, OVERWHELMINGLY against him at the QB position. You have to look at the best-case scenario - which, in White's case is severely limited - and decide if that's worth tying up the roster spot for years and years while he develops. The best you can hope for an under-height, under-weight Quarterback with a noodle arm and a one-read mind, is that someday he'll be...adequate. I hope we cut our losses with White before the whole thing drags on for 3 years like the Ted Ginn affair. Cut him, trade him - I don't care - just get his roster spot open so we can securely keep one more of the many talented LB projects we acquired recently.
Not neccessarily, Thigpen has not shown he is willing or able to pound the rock up the middle out of the WC, he ran the variant "Pistol" offense in KC. As for "who to get rid of" (don't get too deep on us there sport) that is what training camp is meant for, along with who would bring the better value in a trade...
As a complete QB i think thigpen is easily above pat white but i honestly still think pat white can be used as a gimmick player very efficiently still, our offense just hasnt figured it out yet.
Very true, White is a slasher more then a power runner. Regardless though running is secondary if White plans on playing QB in the NFL. He doesnt have the accuracy in my opinion or the brains to get through progressions.
Neither has White. I'd rather have the stronger 225 lb Thigpen running it up inside than the 6' 190 lb White.
More likely the question is do we keep White to allow him more time to develop, over a returner, a WR, a RB, etc... There isn't a question that he was drafted as a QB. Or at least, that was the troika's last public words on the subject, which I highly doubt is the whole truth. That all said, the question they face is what would happen if Henne goes down. Can White carry the team, can Penny carry it and/or can Thiggy carry it. I think Penny can, if needed but there will be limitations. Thiggy is somewhat of a question, but he could be a stopgap for a few games if needed. White ?? I don't see any clear indication that he is anywhere near ready, even for a few games during the season. So, which guy do they keep and which gets the axe. If they had to make the decision right now and they chose to keep White, I think a lot of us would begin to wonder about this regime. White hasn't shown anything this past season as either a QB or a WCxQB. If they wanted a guy that can throw or run and read D's in the WC, Thiggy can do that, albeit not as good a potential runner as White might be. Penny is insurance against a longer term absence of Henne, with an edge on intangibles and experience over White or Thigpen. All signs, with the exception of one, point towards White being the logical odd man out...however, the one exception is that the Troika went out on a limb and selected him so highly, that they may be inclined to keep him even tho he's not ready and may never be....
It's not so much his intelligence level so much the fact that he played in that spread offense at WVU and it doesn't teach you to go through progressions. It teaches one or two reads and tuck it and run. It's a horrible system to transition from college to the pros out of. Sorry I should have been more specific with what I was getting at.
finascious D, I was the one to say something about his intelligence, but as Boik said, it was meant more as knock on his football intelligence in regards to the proset QB position and reading pro style defenses. The kid has never been anything other than willing to do what it takes, that I or probably anyone else knows of him and I wouldn't call him 'dumb' by any stretch. I like the kid, but I'm also disappointed in his progress enough that I just don't think he has what it takes at this level....I hope I have to eat my words in 6 months and he's tearing things up...
That is all well and good. The statement was, "he doesn't have the brains to get through the process." That was the part i didn't understand, because that is an indictment of his intelligence level. What you guys are talking about is experience. Carry on.
More like why would he draft him in the 2nd round? White's a good 6th (at best), 7th round prospect so if he is trash at one position you can switch him over to another. In the end, if he can't cut it, you didn't lose much. This regime doesn't admit mistakes but this was a huge one.
This regime certainly does admit mistakes. Signed Eric Green...cut him when they saw he wasnt the answer to anything. Signed Gibril Wilson...cut him when he didnt live up to expectations Drafted Shawn Murphy..cut him when he couldnt cut it. Signed Josh McCown..traded him when they saw better alternatives out there Thats just off the top of my head. There's a couple of others I know Im missing.
I'm sure you might be able to find a site that had him as a 6th rounder at best, but I don't remember seeing that in any coverage of the 2009 draft. I saw most media outlets reporting him as a 2nd - 3rd round pick such as here: http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=9753&draftyear=2009&genpos=WR The fact of the matter is with the Wildcat sweeping the NFL that season, they didn't want to give up a potential player that could take them to the next level with that package. Of all the potential players in the draft, I don't think anyone would argue that White had the most potential. Hindsight is 20/20, but I really don't think there were many people out there saying he was a bad player. I mean just look at his college accolades. I just don't get it... Just because it's Pat White, and he was our 2nd round pick, he only gets a chance for one year? That's pretty knee-jerk don't you think?
If he had been a late round pick, he would have likely been cut before we ever got to pre season. Nothing "knee-jerk" about it...
Pat White...cannot get rid of him JS...
