Hmm..more opportunity? Martz is notorious for not using Te's for anything but blocking, we could use a seam busting Te, the Bears need a Guard, among other things...
I would love to see that trade... but I think it also isn't going to happen, not unless Ireland has become a wily negotiator.
I dont see us landing Greg Olsen for Smiley. We would be getting away with highway robbery. Maybe Smiley and a 3rd.
Straight up that trade could never happen, now we do have a surplus of #2 type Wr's that the Bears could use.
I don't seen an Olsen-Smiley trade for the simple reason that I don't think this FO wants TEs like Olsen.
Key word is released released I am sure there will be more when Smiley is released. No team wants to pick up his contract and we are getting nothing in return for him.
Yeah i Agree, even though smiley is a good guard, he does have a bad shoulder which will minimize his performance. If it were up to me id put him on IR and see if his shoulder could get any better
The Bears need a #1 WR, not more 2's. They are in much the same boat as we were in prior to getting Marshall. They dont need Bess, Cam, Hartline etc. It would be Smiley and a pick. Still, I would take Smiley and a low rounder instantly. Third or above ... well we are already missing the second from next year. Would have to think more about it.
Been playing Madden again ?? Seriously, back on topic, since it got out that Smiley was no longer in the fins plans, the chances of making a trade for him are slim to none. They know we will eventually release him and then can get him as a FA. I don't know his salary on his current contract, but they must figure if is shoulder is going to always be an issue of some sort, then they can probably get him for less than the market value, assuming he can even play. IF there were any trade discussions involving Olsen, naturally we'd have to give up more than a broken down OL to get a rising star, even if he doesn't fit Martz' style... Do we continue to trade picks away from the future ?? Not exactly this regimes' MO and yet, Olsen would be an addition I'd like to see here...
Well, he could be put on the PUP list and held until mid season sometime, but the word on the street from the local 'insiders' is that he has a degenerative shoulder issue and it's just plain shot. My guess that means it's going to get better, but then once the hitting starts again, it'll flare up as it has over the last couple of seasons. It's very doubtful they keep him on. That is one of this regimes' sticking points with players. They don't seem to be afraid to move on from injured players...and besides, this is the season to do it, depending on his contract as without a hard cap, no harm...no foul...
If he has a degenerative shoulder, then it never gets better. Its a condition that only gets worse, no treatment available. Pup list lasts until Oct. and they would still have to pay him and not use him. While on the Pup list he is not permitted to practice so in effect, we would be in the same position after 6 games into the season as we are now and that is, the team does not want to pay Justin Smiley because they feel he cannot perform.
anyone who thinks we are going to be able to get a pick(s) for justin smiley is out of their minds let alone anything of value. smiley and his shoulder are done.
Why not? Olsen won't catch 40 passes this season, heck when Martz ran the offense in San Francisco Vernon Davis had maybe 40 catches, once Martz left he had 75 receptions. The Te protects the Qb in the Martz system, they aren't primarily receivers, and the Bears signed a Te to fill that role, making Olsen a downgraded player in terms of importance in the Bears offense.
Why would the Bears trade Olsen for an offensive lineman who will be eventually released? Why would they trade a TE who has trade value for an offensive lineman who has serious injury concerns who they can get for nothing when he is released?
-because the Te in question does not fit what they do. -because they need a Guard. -because they squandered their draft choices now have to fill the lineup with something and Smiley even with a bad shoulder is still better than what they have to choose from currently.
I would love to see Olsen come here. I think he's exactly the type of TE we need. I think the drafting of Nalbone indicates that they're looking for a receiving TE to pair with Fasano and Olsen could fill that spot perfectly. I also don't think anybody in Chicago sees Olsen as a "rising star" although I think he could be again in the right situation. I think most of the league sees Olsen and Smiley as guys that could be released. I think Olsen's value is comparable to Sheffler's who if IIRC was traded for a 5th. I could see Smiley and a 6th or 7th round pick being enough to pry Olsen away.
Well, after some thought, we have 6 Guards: -Smiley -Garner -Incognito -Berger -John Jerry -Donald Thomas If the Bears are interested, and that is a huge "if" we could easily package Smiley AND Donald Thomas ala Alleman and Ndukwe last season to the Bears for Olsen. That is not to say Henning will suddenly discover that he likes throwing to the Te, but we do need a Te who can bust the seam deep..and Smiley and Thomas could easily not fit into what the plan is for 2010.
Iam not ready to give up on the legendary Donald Thomas...remember this is his 4th year of playing the position i believe. I like Smiley as a person, but never been a fan of his game..I'd be thrilled if we could move him for a mid round pick.
Look at it this way, all moving Thomas would do is allow Garner and Berger and Jerry and Tsoumpas a shot at LG, I like him but Olsen is an upgrade over what we have at Te. I really do not want anymore draft picks Deej as 2010 is now the focus of everything and moving a Starting Quality player for a future late round pick doesn't make much sense to me. Then again, I look at as if 6th and 7th rd talent can be found as UDFA's and as CFLers...no pick needed.
but we've obviously moved on from the player {smiley} Pod, so a pick would be great..you never know, we can use that extra pick to move up in the draft.. If your saying that they would trade olsen strait up for smiley and thomas, then yeah i could see that.. I would'nt particularly go out of my way to do it though cause i really want to see DT develope.
Well, on Madden I'm sure there are scenarios for trade that would be mutually beneficial to both us and the Bears. In reality, they can just wait for the inevitable release soon to come. Olsen is a better option for them to trade than to release unlike Smiley is to us. The word on Smiley is that he will have trouble with his shoulder for the rest of his career. That said, who'll trade for him ?? Padre listed reasons for the Bears to want to make a move, but he may have left one thing out. They (the Lovey regime) are rather desperate right about now. If they look at his shoulder and it's deemed they can get by with him for at least one season...they could be coerced into a trade. What I don't know is his contract status. I know the bonuses have been paid, but not his salary...if it's in the $4-5M per season range, there's no way they trade for him...as damaged goods, he could come a lot cheaper as a FA...
