I've watched none. I'm merely on this bandwagon cuz I believe he's better than who we have in his slot.

 I watched all of Denver and Arizona's games to get a read on Marshall and Dansby, but Ive only seen a couple Rams games and Im still digesting humble pie for getting excited about Gibril Wilson, so Im gonna have to sit this one out.

Well Wilson is different. Wilson was a SS with the Giants. He was released by the Raiders in 2009. If the Raiders release someone, something must be wrong. He was never proven at the FS position. Phins were desperate. Atogwe SHOULD be much better.

I watched a lot of Marshall because of fantasy football, and a lot of Arizona cuz my girl used to date a cardinal player but I can't say I ever paid attention to St Louis except Steven Jackson of course.

Wilson was a FS with the Giants. The Raiders had him at SS

I think your could say the same thing about the Rams. Its not like that team is just stuffed with quality players the Atogwe didn't have a spot. Rams are probably worse than the Raiders.

In the last three years the Rams have been worse than the Raiders.

In fact the Rams have gotten worse every year the last three years. The amazing thing is, they only won 3 games 3 years ago.

    Just curious:

If your girl "used to date" a Cardinal player, why on Earth would that make you want to watch all of his games. If anything, that would make me not want see any AZ games.

we need a viable veteran FreeSafety. the newbies & would-be's can line up & learn w/o devastating the season, if the starter is competent & schooled @ the position.

if he's healthy, OJ Atogwe could be part of the solution.

can't play around w/ the position , if we expect to make the play-offs this year.
OJ Atogwe is a good thing @ this point in our game.

Don't think it's gonna happen. In fact, Omar Kelly said on the Sedano show that we weren't going to pursue him. Looks like we're going with either Culver or Clemons.

Clemons is looking good thus far. Has a couple ints and I expect him to get more. Teammates are also commenting on his communication getting better as well. I'm really not trying to have the dolphins land the highest paid FS in NFL history after we did that with Dansby and Marshall...

It's midnight tonight. The Rams are trying to come to a last minute agreement with him before then.

I think the issue is that factoring in his production/age/injury history OJ is probably worth about $6 mill/per. I think that's what the market consensus would be. For the Rams to sign him before tonight they'll probably have to pay him $7 mill/per. I think they'll take their chances and let him hit the open market and try to sign him at $6 mill/per after June 2nd. The question is does he want to leave for a better chance at winning or a change of scenery or does he want to stay b/c he loves the team or the community? The Rams are also running the risk that the Cowboys or some other team will give him an above market offer he can't refuse.

I think the Dolphins will offer up to the $6 mill they offered Rolle, but will bow out just like before if some team offers more.

Sorry guys, I'd rather sit this one out. I'd much rather develop Chris Clemons for the free safety spot and pocket the money. Clemons has been showing well in camp and with his speed and ball skill should make a solid if not great free safety givne the chance.

It depends on what they think of Atogwe's character.

Some describe him as reserved, mild-mannered, quiet, an avid reader of comic books. He's obviously very smart as he received a Biology degree from Stanford University, subsequently scored a 30 on the wonderlic. He's donated over $130,000 to local charities back in his home town of Windsor, Ontario, mostly in the form of three scholarships named after his high school football coach, a friend of his that died recently, and his grandfather. His high school coach calls him an "amazing" person.

The Dolphins have no real cerebral, vocal leaders on defense. Channing Crowder is the closest thing and he's too much of a clown, plus his job is really up for grabs, he'll probably come off the field on third downs, and that makes it difficult for him to be a leader. Jason Ferguson is out for half the year and I doubt he's much of a film nut anyway. Yeremiah Bell is too quiet, too much of a put your head down and grind guy. Dansby has never been that kind of guy and I don't sense he's very comfortable being that kind of guy. Eventually, A.J. Edds could captain the D, he has that in him. I think Sean Smith has it in him as well, once he grows up a little.

If they think they get that kind of guy in Atogwe, a guy that wants to step up and be a real leader, first in, last out, that kind of thing...they'll pay the money. If they sense he's the kind of guy that wants to duck his head back and do what he's told rather than be in front of the team making a speech...they'll probably wait out the negotiations to see if the terms go low enough for them to show interest.

Vernon Carey, Vonnie Holliday, Jason Taylor and Will Allen were all members of the 1-15 2007 Fins...would you have wanted one of those guys (in 2007) if they were available ?? Even tho the Fins had a disastrous season ??

Yeah, if Atogwe joins the Fins, he upgrades the secondary tremendously...

If Clemons is doing a great job, lets see what we have. He may be the answer.
My questions is where do we have needs. If signing him eliminates a need, let's do it if Clemons can't do it.

But, that's alot of money tied up in three people.

I'd have to think Karlos Dansby is our biggest leader on defense, by far and possibly Bell more than Crowder

"Doing a great job" is a bit of a stretch. Clemons had one good day in shorts and then disappeared the rest of the mini-camp. Now I really liked him coming out and I'm rooting for him, but doubling up on a position that has become so critical in the NFL might be the wiser course than just hoping Clemons is the answer.

I think someone in the last month or two posted up what our pre-rookie contract salary was, and it was pretty comparable (actually down by like 3 mil if I recall) to what our last year amount was. Now assuming that we're operating as if this is a capped year, the odds of us going to snag someone like Atogwe suddenly look a bit less.

I'd love to get an experienced Safety in here, but I think they're operating soundly from a business perspective, and don't want to see this come back to bite them.

  37. Larryfinfan

    Larryfinfan 17-0...Priceless Club Member

I think Reshad Jones may end up being a better SS than FS at this level. He was probably drafted more for that reason, although it's not unusual for this regime to have SS playing FS...

Atogwe represents a serious upgrade (assuming he is healthy) over Clemons, Culver or even Bell, although a different position... I think if they have the budget, you go after this guy. Naturally all the due diligence has to be done and yes, he'll want big bucks...But if he plays like he did prior to last season, we'd have a great set of Ss to go along with our young CBs...

Big money does not equal big leader. He knows that his high profile acquisition puts him in the spotlight but that doesn't make him a natural leader.

Big If. The surgery definetly has me concerned, which is why I would rather go through some lumps with a 2nd year guy who gets to gain experience than lumps with another Wilson; high expectations, high dissapointment.
