As there continues to be speculation and innuendo in league circles that defensive end/linebacker Vernon Gholston might slip out of the top five, an experienced media insider tells us that, in his view, the talk is wishful thinking from the teams that would love to see Gholston slide. Apparently, however, there’s a growing chance that Gholston won’t slide past No. 1. If Michigan tackle Jake Long doesn’t agree to terms to be the No. 1 overall pick, Gholston could be the guy. Per the source, Fins V.P. of football operations Parcells is always looking for the next Lawrence Taylor, which Golston could turn out to be. The rumors of a slide also, in our view, could be propagated by the Dolphins, who might be hoping to squeeze Gholston into taking the low-ball offer at No. 1 that quarterback Brady Quinn surely wishes in hindsight that he’d accepted in Oakland. http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/04/15/gholston-rumors-wishful-thinking/
I think you mistunderstood. Wishful thinking that he falls out of the top 5. Not wishful thinking that Miami might draft him
I certainly hope you're right. If not then I can live with Jake as our pick, but I'm just not sold on Gholston at #1.
He definitely has a ton of upside (he is compared to Shawn Merriman), but he has issues with his consistency and effort. If Tuna and Co. feel that they can get the most out of him and kick his butt into gear, then great. But I still like Chris Long at #1.
Depends on so many levels. Gholston is classic Boom or Bust. If he lives up to his potential he will probably be the best pass rusher in the league. but watching him play at Ohio St he disappeared from games, should have dominated some. He showed what he can do racking up 7 sacks in 2 games vs Wisconsin and Michigan. I think Gholston could thrive as a Rush Lineback but I think he could make a better 3-4 End.
If Jake is the guy, I'll have to live with it and support him, but I think defense is a bigger need and I would be seriously disapponted if we drafted a RT with the #1 pick.
Actually I like Jake Long than any other pick right now. Yeah we can plug in any round 2 tackle at RT but we can also get a true OLB in round 2.
Like I said in another thread, if we were able to land both Jake Long and Dan Connor I would be a happy man. However, I'd be even more pumped if we were able to get Chris Long and a top OT.
Wasn't meant to be a slight on OSU, darling. Beating y'all silly this season and next. That's a slight.
I love Dan Connor. It's crazy that he could slip out of the first round, but such seems to be the case with a lot of pure talent. I'd love to have him in Miami but I think he'll go before our 2nd pick.
A guy like Shawn Crable would make the hurt of losing Chris Long sting a little less, but he's no Chris Long.
But none would be like Jake Long. Jake Long is the safest pick. Were not sure how well he will do as a LT because he isn't in the NFL yet. To me Chris Long and Gholston are DE's that will play OLB for us. Now I'm not to keen in on that for the number 1 selection. USC beat OHio St??? Kidding right? Who's your QB? Who is your RB? You know what I would be shocked if USC scores more than 10 on Ohio St. I expect Beanie to run wild on the Trojans.
Chris Long is a DE, you wonder why Miami isn't in talks with Chris Long? Because they probably didn't like how he is at OLB.
There are alot of college DE's that made a successful transition to a 3/4 LB. Infact NE is full of them. Chris has the physical tools to make the move IMO.
