That was the worst clock management in the history of football at any level.

And there's no way that could have been on Pennington. I'll never buy that argument.

Seriously though, if I see Ronnie Brown rushing the football with 40 seconds to go in the half with Miami in the opposing team's territory.... I'm going to flip.

exactly. the shackles were on and we called vanilla all night long. no film preparation juts plays designed to see how players match up one on one. not designed to win a game but get a better feel for our players

The Bills had a weakness defending passes thrown by running backs?

For a team that has traditionally struggled early, this TC and preseason hasn't been a revelation, but appears to be mostly more of the same. There is a difference between calling vanilla plays and just calling crap.

Will David Lee replace him by the midway point of the season? Here's the thing, Henne is going to get off to a little bit of a slow start this season... it's to be expected with a new #1 receiver, while he works out the timing... btw, Marshall is a ****ing beast... he cuts better than Bess at times. So amazingly fluid out of his breaks. Ok, I digressed... lol... With Henne getting the slow start, the focus is really on the running game to carry (pun intended) the offense thru these first four games. I'm expecting 2 and 2 out of the gates. Anything less is a disaster... anything better is a god send. But the narrow margin of error for this offense still exists until Henne gets the shackles removed and times up with his receivers. Saw glimpses last week... maybe we're better on the road for some reason from a timing standpoint.

in preseason you generally want isolation type plays to see how players play one on one. its closer to training drills than it is a football game. viewing it as a football game is just the wrong way to look at it IMO. Just the way I feel.

Honestly the only position I'm worried about is Cam Wake. The guy is simply not showing me any ability of being able to dominate and we really need someone to wreak havoc from the WOLB position

We need to get this team rolling. Theres no feeling out process anymore. Get the ball moving to get our guys some EFFING confidence!

Theres no reason to throw any shackles on Henne. When Henne starts rolling its a thing of beauty, the playcalling indeed was bullsh*t.

Matt Ryan was airing it out, wtf can't we try to get some timing down? We just paid B Marsh a billion $$$ to what? Block for the screens and wildcat?

I know its preseason, but this isnt a vet team. Let this passing game get some timing down...

Nobody's upset about that aspect of our offense tonight. There's no Vanilla to clock management. There's no point to dumbing down your 2 min offense.

we were 2-0 going into this preseason game. we had no reason to win this game. it was more important to evaluate players. the only time winning a preseason game is important is when you are 0 for whatever. I think you have to win one game but thats about it. The Colts are one of the worst preseason teams in the NFL and they always come out ready to play weeek one. We'll be fine as long as our offensive line can block and Cameron Wake can actually create a play

i think we have clock management problems every year early. thats more on sparano and the players than henning. doesnt sparano call all the timeouts

In an article this week Sparano said Henning is now a Tony guy.

(On his third year with Dan Henning and how their relationship has evolved) -
he was Bill (Parcells) guy. And now I think he's a--I would feel safe to say he's a Tony (Sparano) guy."

i think they got the ball with 2 to's, and then had 1 left at that moment. they had used one prior when atlanta was in scoring range on the previous drive.

now last year, we came into the season week 1 against that same falcon team very flat and vanilla. so i have my concerns. we used to be a good sept team under wanny...but the past 5 or so seasons has been a damn joke.

if we come out week 1 flat and vanilla...like last season and the many before...im gonna be furious. we're playing a division rival on the road, we better come out guns blazing and blast the hell out of them.

but until then, im not gonna get myself nuts.

Shouldn't we be practicing the 2-minute drill as well? Having our offense build some continuity and confidence as we approach the season (which just happens to be brutal the first half)?

Just looking at that last drive, there was such staccato to it. You could feel it. It was impossible for them to get into a flow that last series because Henning kept sticking his foot out in front of them.

I would consider the possibility that we weren't 'going for it' if we didn't have a two-year track record of this very incompetence.

For the record, I think Dan Henning is a pretty darn good coordinator. But this is a serious chink in the armor. You've got to have more common sense when you're calling plays for those situations. And you've got to be on top of the clock.

These games are not about winning or losing I know. But thats not what everyone is upset over. Its always the playcalling. Henning has this incredible ability to kill momentum, and time!

I would like to see our passing game get some confidence. We know (despite tonights stats) we can run the ball. I personally would like to use some of these weapons we have in the passing game. Lets get these guys some practice during these meaningless games.

And for the 100th time, why is Henne almost never in shotgun? I just want an explanation is all.

if we start off poorly again then i'll jump down sparano's and henning's throat. we have to start out 2-2 or 3-1. no excuse for not being at .500 at the minimum after four. i'm not too worried from what ive seen this preseason. i think the passing game will be fine if the blocking holds up and i think our secondary will be fine if we get a pass rush. i expect both to happen so i'm not too concerned yet. but we'll see in two weeks. so far i'm happy with what ive seen

Execution was terrible on offense most of the night.

But the playcalling at the end of that half was all too familiar.

The players see it. The fans see it. Former coaches and analysts see it. We're not crazy.

I was happy last week, I am blah this week, I will make my decision on jumping off my roof until after week 1.

The run to Ronnie at the end of the half was a bad call tho imho...Not sure why you would go East/West in FG range with not much time left, you should be going North/South...

Stressing over preseason is a waste of time.

Saw a lot of encouraging things tonight and you have to realize we'll look a lot different in 2 weeks when we can open up the playbook with a stable lineup.

When I asked Sparano about this last year (or was it the year before), he said it was preference more than anything. That the QB has a better vantage point of certain things from that position (under center) and some QB's prefer to be there. Basically he was suggesting the QB's preferred it a lot of the time.

OT: yes, I physically asked him in person.

thats very interesting  i thought it was because henning preferred play action. i mean i remember henne faking handoffs even when we were a touchdown down with a minute to go and needing seven. everyone knew we were passing but henne continued the fake handoffs

Well we did run the ball on 3rd and 16 in Carolina....with our 4th string RB....and pick up a first down.

I'm sure that's what he's referencing when he calls PA on those critical downs. :shifty:

Seriously, how hard must CH roll his eyes when he knows he's about to execute play action on fourth and a mile with 8 seconds left?

I could care less about the game. It's the same 2minute tendencies that will keep this team in shackles. Maybe Nolan can get us to the playoffs, but there's no way we make it to the Superbowl unless Henning and Sparano have some major epiphanies concerning clock management under 2 minutes.

Then what happens...another year is wasted, another coach, another system...and for what? to understand the principles of running an efficient 2 min. offense?

Favre doesn't care what Childress thinks when he changes a play at the line. Henne should do the same.

Wow. I can't believe we're really talking about that after a preseason game.

The 2 min drill before half time wasn't bad. I didn't like the runs with Ronnie, but the time management was good. Henne just didn't do us any favors with that int.

Sorry, but there's too much parity in the NFL. The 2 minute offense is too critical as evidenced by the Patriots. Say what you will, but Bellichek and Brady have won Superbowls by deftly orchestrating the 2 minute drill. Too many games are won and lost in the last 2 minutes of the game.

At the risk of being redundant:

You really think our 2 min offense was why we didn't win this game?

Kinda hard to get things goin when your commiting 6-7 penalties in the 1st half.

I just shudder when I see the same tendencies on display as I've seen in the last two years when it comes to our 2 min. offense.

I don't take any game that seriously:up:Nor do I give a damn about winning or losing a preseason game.

It's just formations and clock management under 2 min. that I have a beef with.

What Muck posted earlier when asking Sparano about the shotgun just blew my mind. It makes me simultaneously distrust Sparano's forthrightness (As I've never heard of a QB preferring to take snaps under center in obvious passing situations) and question Henne as a QB (for the exact same reason). It's just plain effin' weird in today's NFL. I don't think I'll ever believe anyone who says being under center in a 2 minute drill is advantageous. In fact, I need to start a thread and get to the bottom of this...

QB's in the shotgun have to take their eyes off the defense in order to catch the snap. Where as under center they can look at the defense the entire time.

Not sure if that is an answer or not. Just thought I would mention it.

I could care less the loss, we all know this past game is not about that. It is "PRE-season". Some thing that goes hand in hand with a preseason game is "vanilla" calls, ones that we have all seen before. But we should still be able to execute them. Passes should be caught, blocks should be made, and points should be scored. You all saw how much pressure Henne had on him, and Matt Ryan was secure in his pocket for 5-7 seconds all day. Blitzes or not pressure from the front line was almost non-existent. Both teams did not prepare extensively for this game, but the falcons got the job done with basic plays, and we didn't. Some of the blame falls on Henning, not giving Henne a chance to succed in some situations, like that ridiculous run play on that 2 minute offense drive. And how Henning would call 2 wildcat plays in a row and then expect Henne just to come in on 3rd and 10 and be automatic. But Henne did have marshall wide open and missed him a couple times. All I wanted to see was a decent productive drive, and I feel we were robbed of that.

Although we got some good news. VD a.k.a. "The Flyswatter" cracked the whip tonight. Carpenter has no rust on his boots(53 yard-er), and can lay down a tackle if need be.And of course our special teams play can't get much worse,jk, but really.

So all in all yes Henning's calls were at times a bit reminiscent of the crap we saw last year, but it's not all his fault, the blame is shared with most of the team. But calm down we are still 0-0 with 2 weeks to tune things and make adjustments. Just be glad your not going to be a Dolphin for next week practice, I suspect Sparono's wrath will be vicious.
