http://blogs.palmbeachpost.com/thed...phins-saturday-rewind-where-is-the-pass-rush/ Well, they tried Marlon Moore and he was not successful, but it appears Nolan Carrol and DBess are the "Returners" heading into 2010, I like Carroll's game but am not wild about DBess on Punts, though he did have a good return last night. I still suspect that we may pick someone up after waivers this September, as Carroll is wearing many hats as it is, and DBess is average wheels as a punt returner. I can see Carroll coming close to Ginn's 1,400 yards on returns but I'd prefer to have someone match Ginn's 1,700 yds in total performance
I didnt think Moore did bad I think it was more on the poor blocking. I predict he will be our PR by the end of the season
Bess is a safety pick. He'll probably never break one, but he'll almost always make the right decisions especially when the opposing team is punting from midfield. I wish we could find an alternate punt returner though - a guy we can place back there will be guaranteed space. We tried with Ginn from time to time last year.... Still want to see Marlon Moore get more of a shot than he got last night.
Definitely. I can't stand seeing Bess FC'ing balls other returners will get yards on, and other times only coming away with 10 yds even though when he catches it no-one within 10-15yds of him.
They should also try to put Carroll on punt returns, I know that Bess is the safest guy to have back there but he doesn't give us too many yards.
Had to give you your first thanks. I also believe Carroll can do more he is very smart. Welcome to the boards rookie
As long as he comes close to Ginn's return yards we're fine. That extra 300 yds is nominal compared to him wasting space on the WR unit. Plus you have to look at upside...... Carroll actually has some.
I missed the first three quarters of the third game looks like it was a blessing missing it. I agree Pads we will be looking for a posible grab from upcoming cuts to help fill this void.
Eh, we'll see, he has not played very well at all as the Nickel back, so he has to be a good Returner and ST player.
He definitely has a ways to go at the cornerback position, but if coached correctly I think he'll develop into at least something decent. He's a genius and seems to have great work ethic. I wouldn't mind giving Carroll a shot at PR either. Still, I think Marlon Moore has the tools to do well there. I know it was only 12 yards and a reverse, but he's got an explosive break.
Carroll has a long way to go to become the nickle Cb. What I see is that the team likes Bess on punt returns because he has sure hands. I'm sure they'd love someone who'd be a threat to take it to the house but are more content at this time to just get a few yards and let the offense take over.....for now
Which kinda bugs me its football. Everone should have hands and theres gotta be some speed guys that can catch lol. But I do agree on the asessment your giving on Bess and why he is there its just annoying
It annoys me, but I had to chime in. Sparano mentioned he loves the big play but would be happy to get out to the 27 yard line consistent. i just dont see Bess doing it. I understand we like to put the ball in smart players hands but we have alot better options IMO. Caroll will start of on punts right? But why still have Bess on kicks, he's not fast and he has no size to break tackles
Well, keep in mind with Sparano, he wants players who can do several jobs "well" over specialists who do one job really well. That saves roster slots on Game Day so developmental players can be carried on the roster. My problem with that is there are 250 touches per season for Returners, or as many as a Running Back will have in a two back system. You need production out of that role if they are to touch the ball that often. As for Marlon Moore...no way he ends up on Returns, his hands are inconsistent.
Moore would have to make the roster 1st .... in order to 'win' the PR job later in the season .... if he can't win a STs job now, he won't make the roster as the 5th WR. Regarding Carroll and nickel ... that's one of the reasons we went out and got Sapp ... albeit, i wouldn't be at all surprised if Sapp ended up as a S in a 'Bob Sanders' type role before the end of the season -- provided he isn't forced into replacing Smith 1st .... Carroll will get there, but just like Clemons ... it won't be until next year, and by then i expect him to replace Smith as CB ...
WOW HE IS GONNA REPLACE SMITH? The reason IMO we brought in Smith is because of his size. Smith is developing and will continue imo The reason I like Smith and i believe the coaches do is he has long arms to jam a receiver. While also being able to recover fast. In the endzone if he's beat he can get the hands up. Smith will have another good year. Carrol is smart, fast and driven but dont see the talent a Smith has. Smith will always be a yr ahead and thats all it takes . I still believe smith can be special
