I'm not a big fan of Tony Sparano, but I don't understand who he's supposed to make the switch to?

He has to stick with Chad Henne.

For the record; once and for all, I think Henne has all the makings of a great QB. He is tough, smart, calculating, and is a good leader. But for the life of me I can't figure out if all of the things Shulaboy mentioned (all of which he took from me in a previous post) is the fault of Henne or the coaching itself?

I went back and watched some highlights and Henne has the ability to be a mobile QB and he has shown that he has a rifle for an arm, just not this year so far. I know that the season is still in it's infancy but is it that he making these mistakes or just playing the way they want him to?

In reality Henne holding the ball too long and letting the LB's drop into coverage for INT's or not running for the first down might not be his ideas at all, he might just be doing what he is told. Possibly they are telling him to stay in the pocket and be one dimensional? IDK, maybe this has nothing to do with him??

With all of that said I hope TS stays for a long time. He is a hard nosed, passionate coach, but I have no idea why they are re-training Henne this way or who they would replace him with. Thigpen has a spark on the field and I like his style but he is not ready to lead the team.

I would like to see them retire Penny and make him the QB coach, give Thig some playtime and stop pulling the wires off Henne's game. I hope that after the bye week they let him loosen up, move around and throw down the field like he is capable of.

I fear that if Henne contiues to be one dimensional, throws more INT's, refuses to flush from the pocket, costs us wins and TS won't part from him or change him - that it will hurt TS. I fear this because I don't want that to happen.

The season is young - and time will tell

I am sure he will lead us to many victories, just not the way he played against the Patsies with 3 INT's. Everyone has a bad game - lets see what happens after the bye week. If nothing changes we could be in trouble.

the thing with henne's performance monday was that it was both positive and negative. what people are doing against henne now is playing deep zone and forcing him to make decisions underneath. i think henne has proven that he can destroy man coverage.

compare two zone defenses. against minnesota he played much more conservatively and just dinked and threw the ball away. against the patriots he actually did a pretty good job of attacking and dissecting it except for the damn interceptions. it was improvement overall but with a few crucial mistakes. you have to think the interceptions will start to go away and if he can dissect a deep zone and destory man coverage well then you're getting to a point that you're getting a QB who can move the ball on any defense

Lets face it - they didn't bench him because we was having a good day, and it does not look like CH is comfortable with the way they are using him. We should have scored 40 points in Buffalo but this new baby step offense has Henne chained down. He has been very flat footed in the last two games as well.

The people on this thread just don't understand that we are talking about the bigger picture and not one bad game. But you raise a good point - is the problem Henne or how they are using him?

There were a mountain of offensive play calling blunders in that game resulting in three INT's by LB's (all 3 I think). Why weren't we throwing deep when we were behind? Why were we running the ball (and the clock) in the 4th qrt when time was running out? Where was our two minute drill? Henne was indeed being "mis-used'.

It's almost as if we had no intention of winning the game, and if that was the object - then Bravo.

I think Henne has a better chance of sticking than Sparano
Sparano is the bad result of a parcellian experiment in coaching
Henne is a legitimate QB that may never be elite but will play

You are right. He has the tools and he his is improving but the immobility factor really concerns me. It almost looks like he would rather force the ball than run for a first down, and that needs to stop, and hopefully will.

These are the most pathetic posts on message boards. We support our young quarterback and give proof that he's progressing and having a solid season and we're "fanboys" and "apologists". GTFOOH

And by the way, if you haven't seen signs that Henne could be a lot more than just "average", then you're just not watching the games.

I respect everyone's opinion, but that's such a lame argument in a debate. "You're wrong because you're an apologist!" Hate that. You are correct on that point though, we all root for the same team and want to win.

They were pointed verbs I'll admit and I know it upset you but its just not worth the blood pressure. Once the bye week is behind us and we have a few more in the W column none of this will matter. Personally, I don't care if we win with Daffy Duck as QB - as long as we win. Just win baby..

I disagree. I get the impression that he would rather throw it away or take a sack than to force bad throws while under pressure. IMO that's pretty big for a young QB. Tucking and running for a few yards can be EASILY learned and incorporated. This shouldn't even be an issue.

IMHO I think this regime is methodically trying to bring Henne along. IE: developing a few aspects of his game at a time and then moving onto the next. I think what we see Chad doing is what the coaches have asked of him. Sparano has said as much in pressers after the first 2 games IIRC. The vast difference between the first 2 games and the Jets game leads me to believe they're still pulling the strings.

Like AdamPrez pointed out: QBs go through sophomore slumps as coaches have time to game plan against them. I think that's what we saw from Belichick Monday. He threw things at Chad that he hasn't really seen, so I can't fault Henne for the INTs; I can only hope he learns from them just as all great QBs have had to do in order to overcome similar obstacles.

This poll is implying that Henne is a failing Qb. Thats like saying "does your mom know your insane", answering "no" implies your insane.

Sparano is not backing a failing QB, he is backing a growing young QB.
If you pull Henne after one bad game, you will destroy his confidence.

Bottom line is he had a bad game, get over it. Enough with these ridiculous threads.

I can see picking apart what Henne did wrong, critiquing the team, OK, but threads like these are frustrating and idiotic.

Henne is learning and rapidly. I guess I get so frustrated with Henne because I know that he is better than the average QB for his development time and he has a ton of skills, so maybe I expect too much of him. I probably should learn to correct that. As Dolphins fans I think we all have high expectations for our team, especially if we are older fans like I am.

I can see that he is developing but I just can't wait for him to blow people's doors off. I wanted him to unleash the hounds of hell on the AFC East opponents this year but I guess we'll settle for wins. Wins are wins and I'll take them.

I hope TS and CH have many years together to complete his development, and I also hope that Penny retires into our QB coach to help the process. I like Thiggy too and think he has exceptional skills but he is not ready to lead the team and could stand to get some actual live play time. It couldn't hurt to have a competent back up - just in case the unthinkable happens.

We have so many tools at the ready its just impossible to imagine we could implode like that. I am just so god damned frustrated with this. It will be interesting to see what the offense looks like after the much needed bye week. I hope they sort this; the stuttering wildcat, and a few other glaring mistakes out. The Packers game will be interesting to watch for many reasons.

I don't want to get too deep into this dirt flinging and name calling, because you do raise some valid points. But let me just point out that last year Chad Henne out dueled Tom Brady last year to the tune of 335 yards and 2 TDs in a 22-21 Dolphins win.

Based on what we've had since Marino, I think it's very easy to fall into that trap of excitement about a QB leading to frustration b/c we can't reap the rewards immediately. I feel ya brother. You have strong emotions which is a good thing IMO....... try to channel that emotion into optimism and you'll be much happier during the tough games.

I think it also has something to do with seeing our other young players performing at a high level early on, which is rare. As a whole there's a 3 year learning curve for a reason. Just as high school kids take a few years to develop going into college and not much is expected of them till they're typically Juniors, college kids take a few years to develop when competing against faster, stronger, smarter, more experienced, grown NFL men while learning a more complex play book etc.

It's a lot easier on the stress level if you think of our young guys in terms of High School players transitioning to college. Very few Freshman or Sophomores play like experienced Seniors. And as badly as I want to win, I try my best to have realistic expectations, and then use these expectations to gauge our progress (or lack there of). Our team right now is like a Sophomore football player. It's talented, but very young and inexperienced, and by default will have a tough time consistently playing like a Senior who has twice as many games under his belt. Like a Sophomore, the ceiling is there and potential is obvious, but it takes time to achieve the full potential. We're ridiculously full of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year players who still have tons of growing to do. While some are having a great game and showing glimpses of their awesome potential, others may be having lapses. Over time this should change to where the lapses are fewer and far between and we'll be shining as a whole..... as a team. When this team grows into "Senior" mode, I think it'll be capable of inflicting damage for a very long time. Special Teams aside, I see us improving on offense and defense and at least meeting or exceeding expectations considering we've been w/o Jerry, Odrick, Crowder, Merling, Garner, Edds, Allen, and McDaniel (last week). At least all of this is how I preserve my sanity.

By the way..... I completely agree with you and love the positive enthusiasm you're showing right now! Stuff like this is contagious my friend. We need to be believers, not doubters.... b/c until the cards unfold, there's no reason to doubt while we have such a talented team and quality organization. If we were the Lions of the past few years, I'd be doubting. Thank goodness we're not, right!

If we go 12-4 this season and win a SB it would be difficult to appreciate this team when it ACTUALLY does reach its full potential b/c we're still ascending and aren't near our ceiling. Sounds kind of backwards, but that's how I perceive it at times. (helps me to not get carried away with expectations leading to disappointment)

I for one am enjoying watching our development and growing pains.... like watching a child growing up knowing that he/she has a tremendous future ahead of him! It's painful to the eyes at times, but you know it's only making them stronger while building character and determination.

    AMEN!

By the way, about this thread. I could have (and should have) done a better job wording it. The direction that I wanted to go with this was in the farther future. IE:...If Henne totally busts later in the year and TS refuses to change will it hurt his tenure, sort of a thing. It was meant to be a hypothetical question and people took it literally and confused it with the current loss. That was not my intention. The thread was meant to be more about what Ross would think about TS at that point in the future and it got taken out of context. The sad part is that I had to go to work and didn't get a chance to change it until everyone hopped on me for it.

I have always been a Henne fan, and was thrilled when we drafted him. I liked him in college and I feel that he has the skills to be one of the greats ... but .... damn it, I want it now :-) I have been a for four decades and every year I hope this is the year. I guess I should curb my anticipation of him being instantly as good as Brady. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I never meant to imply that this kid won't be one of the greats. He could be. This teams brightest days are ahead of it. It will take some soul searching but we will prevail.

If Henne fails this season, and assuming the failure is huge (if he plays very poorly and the team wins only 6 or 7 games), then this team is back to square one with no quarterback. It wouldn't matter if Sparano managed to avoid being axed after this year. He'd certainly be fired the following season unless we managed to draft the next Dan Marino.

Whether you like Henne or not, I don't see how any fan of the team could want him to fail. How far would that set us back, barring a miracle?

You know....I think that is one of the most honest...and helpful posts I have read in awhile. THIS is exactly what I think alot of fans who are down on Henne are feeling, but wont say. Thanks Cobra.....

I think this is just a sign of the times....people see other teams with awsome QB's...and we all want one to. Especially after having Dan Marino. But what so many people dont realize...is the TIME....TIME TIME...it takes to develop a franchise QB. Sure you could sign one as a FA. Anyone know of any of these coming up next season? You draft your young QB...and you develop him into your franchise QB. And you enjoy the years after.....but it takes TIME.

WEAKSIDE??? With Louis' amazing ability to get under Tackles' pads and drive them back into the face of the Quarterback even when doubled by a Tight End, he was the best Strongside backer who never was. If only he'd gotten a fair chance at the position. A Hall of Fame career at simply squandered.

T-buck was always my darkhorse to move to Weakside linebacker. How the coaches couldn't see it, I don't understand.

They are all stupider than I... than me?.... than I.

(say, I'm trying to pick up Cecil Collins on my fantasy team and can't find him. did we trade him? a shame. what team's he on?)

I think you are absolutely correct. It's all about development and time. I guess Marino was really a tough act to follow, even after all this time. The old saying is true; "you don't know what you've got until it's gone". TS will whip them back into shape like he always does and by week six all of this negativity and disappointment will be forgotten.

It is good to begin well - it's better to end well.

To replace Henne right now would be a pretty knee jerk reaction and those don't often end for the better...at least find out what we got.If things don't get better by the end of the season then we can talk about replacing him but it's way premature right now.
