Is Ronnie Brown the most overrated starting RB in the league?

Hard to think of one that is more of a disappointment than Ronnie.

Whether it is the dancing, not hitting holes, or poor field vision...it just seems he doesn't have "it".

No 100 yard games this season and only 1 TD (week 1). 11 straight games he has been held below 100 yards rushing and only 2 in the last 15 games.

Hardly the makings of an elite back as one would expect.

Fair to say that our 1st pick in the draft should be on the best RB out there.

I have a strong feeling he will not get the money he wants next season so that opens the door to the draft .. but not sure if theres anyone worth taking a shot at in 2011 ..

He doesn't get enough carries to get 100 yards. He's averaging 4.1 ypc.

Caddy in Tampa is averaging 2.5ypc. Pierre Thomas 3.2, MJD 3.8, Benson, 3.9.

    I could keep going....

Or maybe he would get more touches if he was more effective.

The thing is that he isn't making the most of the chances he has. Many times he just runs into the pile and gets 3 or 4 that way. He lacks break away speed and he doesn't see holes well at all.

5 100 yard games in the last 3 years. I don't care if you are sharing or not...it isn't like Ricky is getting tons of touches...you make the most of your chances.

Ronnie averages 4.1 a carry. Take out Ricky (most teams don't have) and give his carries to Ronnie and he's a 13-1400 yard back. The math is easy:

    30 carries x 4.1 yrds = 123 yrds

    123 yrds x 16 games = 1968......oops

It would also help if teams feared our passing game also. They don't fear Ronnie because they don't fear Henne. Double team Marshall and tie up Bess at the line and Miami struggles. Play action passes rarely work because are passing game is mediocre. We need one more complimenting receiver, and a QB that is willing to throw the ball more then 10 yards:up:

I love Ronnie and he's ran decently, but not with authority like the All-Pro we've seen in the past.

I've said many times here that I think the Dolphins will franchise Ronnie and have Ricky for another year. They're both pretty good still.

We'll be drafting a running back next draft, which is more indicative that Cobbs/Hillard haven't moved up the depth chart by now.

so he is getting a high ypc, but he isn't making the most of his chances? That makes no sense.

Who is saying Ronnie is having a Pro Bowl season?

To be overrated I would think the media would be talking about him being one of the best RBs in the league. I don't think I have come across one article this season making a claim like that.

Ain't gonna happen...if he comes out.

Right now he is telling all that will listen that he is seriously considering coming back since he feels like he owes it to the fans for cheating them out of this season.

But if he does leave...he is a top 3 pick.

We don’t know how much money Ronnie wants.

As for taking a shot on people in 2011, this upcoming free agency is going to be excellent for the positions we need: RB, TE, and S. LB to a lesser extent. Everyone from DeAngelo Williams to Michael Bush will be a free agent. Ronnie will get less money just because he’s nowhere near the best option in free agency.

Think back to that draft and the top four picks. Alex Smith, Ronnie, Braylon Edwards and Cadillac. What a terrible year to have a top pick

Sucks, but could've had Aaron Rodgers (who I wanted if we took a QB, but I wanted Ronnie most of all), or Demarcus Ware.

Its unfair to say that Henne doesnt want to throw over 10 yards. 47% of his completions on sunday were over 10 yards

Brown has is having a very average season, as is Ricky.

The fact that they've combined for just one rushing touchdown all season says a lot, especially when you consider that success that Henne is having in terms of throwing the ball (he's averaging nearly 300 yards passing over the past 4 games and is among the league's leaders in third-down conversions).

The culprit, in my opinion? An offensive line that is doing a great job of pass blocking but horrible job of run blocking.

Our running game is the reason we aren't scoring more than we are. I've been impatiently waiting for that breakthrough performance and it just hasn't happened, nor has it really come close. We're 24th in the league in YPC. With a team and coaching staff that prides itself on being a run first team, that's pathetic.

I said this in Padre's thread last night and I'll say it again here. Our redzone issues start with our run game. We have 1 rushing TD on the year and that came in Week 1. The fact Chad Henne has played as well as he has without any run support just shows you how greatly he's progressing. Sure, you can put a little blame on a lot of different factors but the rush offense has been putrid, especially in the redzone. You can't put it all on a young QB's shoulders every single time.

Whether it's Ronnie and Ricky, the run blocking, or Dan Henning to me doesn't matter anymore. It's time for the running attack to step up big time.

I don’t think Aaron Rodgers becomes Aaron Rodgers if we draft him. He’d have been expected to start right away and wouldn’t have had a lot of help. Certainly Ricky wouldn’t have come out of retirement, because Saban would have run him into the ground with a rookie QB to worry about.

Now, if we had pulled a San Diego and drafted Drew Brees, then Aaron Rodgers could have been Philip Rivers.

Deangelo Williams will be a fa in the offseason if he doesn't get tag, plus you can easily fing a good rb in any round of the draft even a udfa.

to be fair, we've played some pretty darn good defenses so far this year. This week against the bumgals will be the first time we see real running lanes all season. Wait to judge our running game until after this week.

Running backs in this league are a dime a dozen. And right now, Ronnie is worth about a nickel. At most.

had no running problem with last years offensive line
fact is the newly installed interior linesmen have not consistently won the trenches in the run game
they do better @ pass protection than attacking defenses
got to do better @ getting the push to open the lanes consistently for our backs
very difficult for anyone (accept maybe Barry Sanders) to run w/o blocking

    :confused2:

I said I wanted to draft Ronnie most of all (as in more than anyone else in that draft). In fact, Benson was my 2nd choice, while Edwards was my 3rd.

There was a lot of talk about Alex Smith at the time though, and I recall not wanting him with a passion and that I would have preferred Rodgers if we took a QB. I said as much in posts at the time.

I never considered Ware as a potential pick. I don't know of anyone who did honestly.

I'm certainly not looking back and being like "oh I wanted this guy and we'd be better off if the FO had just listened to me." I've been wrong about guys plenty of times and have no problem admitting it (Chad Jackson and Jimmy Williams for example).

We should of traded him to GB when their back went down. Try to get a decent pick for him. Start Hilliard with Ricky to see what he has and/or maybe add a spark.

This has been a popular sentiment on these boards for a while but, truth be told, he's never been an elite back in this league. You have to stay on the field to be considered elite.

But the math isn't that simple. Do you really believe that Henning could call Brown's number even 20 times a game for an entire season? He's been in the league since 2005 and hasn't yet proven to be durable enough to handle that type of load.

If not now, then when? He's approaching 30.

Whether he's just in a funk now, or in permanent decline, he's hardly overrated. It's not as if the football press is constantly raving about him. I imagine he's always been a bit overrated among Miami fans, but not the league in general. And certainly not after this season.

It will be real interesting to see what happens in the off-season with him. I don't think resigning him to anything but a very team-favorable contract will be a priority, but I also don't think that Brown is going to find that there's a ton of interest out there from teams looking to sign him to a monster deal. So I wonder whether he would stay in Miami or play somewhere else if he were to make the same amount of money in either place.

Take out the 51 yard scamper (which most other RB's would have scored on) and you have a 3.49 average

Give Ronnie Rickys carries with a realistic 20 carries per game and you have a whopping

    69.8 yards per game

I was screaming for them to trade Ronnie. Why keep him and never use him. It makes no sense. I hear people say you don't use him now because he might get hurt. Why keep a guy who you can't put on the field because he is injury prone. The Ronnie Brown dilemma makes no sense at all.

Ronnie has 76 carries in 6 games. At around 12-13 carries a game, you can't expect the guy to find a rhythm or come close to sniffing 100 yards.

I would also add to the drop in explosive plays from RB has been a result of our interior run blocking. We are in no way nearly as effective running power football as we were the past 2 years. The talent isn't the same IMO.

I'm hoping Jerry will clean that up a bit over Mquinston, but i think lots of it has to do with the ability for Ritchie and Pat to pull.

I've tried to analyze where this is comming from and with no real play breakdown just gut feeling is that Ronnie is a patient runner, always has been. Ricky is more downhill and aggressive. This year our pull run scheme's have not been what they were when Donald Thomas was pulling. Lots of times this year by the time the guard gets over and ronnie waits for the space it's clogged up, no space is made and a LB/DB gets around and gets ronnie from behind before he decides to hit the hole. In the past 2 years the hole opened up and ronnie gashed it for 5+ yards or longer.

Ricky doesn't wait as long and just powers in there.

I think the line, Henning, R&R all need to figure out what is wrong and how to make it work more effectively. I don't think it's just one player or coaches problem, it's how the offense, the running offense is working together.

The biggest factor imo is the run schemes' that ronnie is being used in and his style of running, the personnel blocking is different, so he should be making adjustments to his game to take advantage of where his opportunities are going to come with this line.

We all expect more and I'm hoping they figure it out. If Ronnie was getting the big play yardage we are used to getting from him we would be a much tougher team to play against.

Also the run D's we have faced aren't slouches so far this year, Pitts/Jests/GB/Minnisota all have very good run D's, that could change when we face the remaining opponents on the schedule.
