Look on the bright side. If we were in the AFC South where we geographically belong we'd be right in the middle of playoff contention. Remind we why we are in this division again? Which is more south Miami or Indianapolis? Indianapolis is in the AFC South and we aren't??

Because of long standing rivalries and owners and fans wanting to keep the traditional matchups.

We used to have a great rivalry with the Colts. Lets put it to a vote and forward to the commish.

Because the Dolphins' rivalries with the Jets, Bills and Patriots were much bigger than the Colts' rivalries with those teams. The Colts' biggest rival was probably the Dolphins at the time, the Colts/Patriots rivalry didn't really begin until after 2002. Dolphins only had 2 losing seasons from 1970-2003[how things have fallen since '04, you can't always stay on top], so they were always challenging for the division title and in the playoff race which made them extra heated.

Would rather Miami be in the AFC East than South. One day the South will have a tougher division. One day soon the NFC West will become a strong division again[probably when we play them].

I'd rather have the playoffs and Superbowl wins than stupid rivalries any day. I say, let the Jets trip the Colts on the sideline, I'll take the championship. Let the stupid NFL sell their tickets somewhere else.:yes:

All that AFC East formula does is give the NFL more ticket money and make our team look awful. Who cares about NFL rivalries and NFL parity and their social engineering. I want Miami Dolphin championships again!!! I am a Miami Dolphin fan, could care less about NFL rivalries. We are a warm weather grass team and have no business in the cold weather artificial turf AFC East. We should have been put in the AFC South on it's inception. The only reason we weren't was Ralph Wilson needed to sell tickets in his tiny NFL market. The Bills fans love to see us in the snow and buy tickets to watch it happen. Making the Dolphins their sacrificial lamb is a freakin' sacrilege to this franchise and has killed sparkling team records. maybe when Ralph Wilson finally dies this will change.

Being in another division won't help them win in the playoffs. Get in, maybe, but after :dunno:

You are probably right. If we have a great record, we'll get home field advantage and then we'll certainly lose every game . . . . . .

Can anyone remember what happened the last time we played (a current) AFC South opponent in an away game that mattered (ie the playoffs)?

    62-7
    :shifty:

Not to mention in the AFC South we'd be spotted 2 losses every year because we can't beat the Texans.

I don't think snow is a big of a culprit as we think it is. I don't think they like it but they can play well in it. I think the turf is a bigger issue. Since the Pats, Jets and Bills are now all on turf we don't win up there like we used to. Hey! The Texans would be our new big rivalry in the AFC South. I like it!

Is this fantasy land or in reality? Cuz in reality they are very mediocre an being in another division won't make them elite.

there is no excuse or rationalization for losing to the browns and bills at home while being in playoff contention, and playing in a playoff elimination game...we dont deserve sh$#.

I fully recognize that I'm sarcastic, but I fail to see how anything about my post was cutting someone down or in some way claiming I was better than anyone here (don't think I've ever insinuated as such, and I certainly would never claim it, as I know for a fact that I'm no better than any of the people I've met in person from this site). I was just making a joke about what might happen if we were in the AFC south, since we can't beat the Texans. I didn't mention anyone. I didn't mention myself. I didn't cut anyone down. I wasn't righteous (maybe this reply is).

I frankly don't get why you linked Muck's post either since I wasn't rude, disrespectful, or anything of the sort.

If you have a problem with me (as evidenced by your post) there is always the ignore button, or the little report button (looks like an "alert" symbol) under my posts (3 to the right of the "thanks" button) to voice your concerns with a staff member who will surely take it up with me and dole out the proper punishment if they think I have been in the wrong (I certainly have been before). Anyway, hope you have a good night and a Merry Christmas.

This is funny thread and was meant to be that way. It was also meant to be thought provoking. If we suck - we suck, and a new division won't change that, but playing for the NFL rivalry factor is crazy.

The NFL is really becoming a self promotion whore with this parity thing and they are doing it at the ruination of old dynasty teams like the Dolphins and the Raiders. Years ago there was no AFC South so it didn't matter, we had to play in the AFC East. But NFL rivalry and NFL marketing aside; it is pretty dumb for the NFL to put Indy in the AFC South and not us. I don't see any Palm trees in Indianapolis! I don't think it would matter in a new division but common sense should have put us there.

If they are going to pit teams against teams that have no business in the same division just to sell a few extra tickets - why don't they just fix the games for maximum ratings and get it over with. I thought football was about true competition, sport and letting the best team win. That must be an antiquated thought process, because now it doesn't matter to the NFL who wins, or who plays, or in what division as long as they sell extra tickets doing it.

I guess they don't care about the individual reputations and identities of teams any more. I can remember when being a Dolphin really meant something. We were better than everyone else. The Raiders had a "Commitment to Excellence" as their slogan and they really meant it. Today the have a "Commitment to parity". I guess socialism has finally hit sports were they arrange things so all the teams are close. When I was kid we picked our favorite football teams by their identities and that really meant something. Now we are prostituted out by the NFL in the wrong division for rivalrie$ and rating$. I guess I am just old fashioned. It is a funny little thread but worth scratching your head on for a while.

I think any professional sports league that would do something like this is a Laughing stock.

Hey, here's an idea. Why not put the Boston Bruins in the Russian hockey league and let then fly back and forth all season. If there was more money in it for the NHL, they'd probably do it.

If we move to a weak division and get in the playoffs we still gotta beat good teams to get to big game, sorta like 1972 & 73.

Well IIRC that the NFL was going to send us to the South, but Huizenga stepped in and lobbied Tagliabue to not do it. Anyone else remember it that way ?

Doesn't anyone remember the Atlanta Braves in the old NL West ? That was because the Dodgers lobbied for that, they wanted an easier team there. Same with the Cowboys still being in the NFC East. They should be in the Central, but it makes more money to keep them in the East. Its not what makes sense its what makes teams agendas correct, whether they want wins (the old Dodgers) or money (Dolphins & Dallas being in the wrong dividions).

I think owners lobby for such things to boost ticket sales, merchandising, TV audiences etc... It is a business after all, but I have to wonder if the owners and the league haven't taken it too far. I think there is a fine line between sport and business and I think more often than naught they cross it. The owners always have their eye on the money, the coaches always have their eye on the game. No coach would take a warm weather grass team and make them travel 1/2 way across the country to play all of their inner division games on cold turf, but an owner sure would. Of course when that decision was made only the Bills were on turf. The Pat's and the Jets switched later.

Like I said, its a thought provoking thread and really nothing more. I think we all know nothing will change because of it.

Screw that. There is nothing finer than beating the jets. Forget NFL rivalries as you call them. I've learned, as any good dolfan should to completely and utterly hate those three teams and fanbases. I wish them eternal suffering, and want nothing more than to destroy them. Wanting realignment is cowardly, imho.

I think it would only be cowardly if we were the ones that started the realignment. Hey - lets all vacation in Indianapolis, they must have palm trees. After all they are in the newly formed AFC South. (new map?)

No wonder Indy keeps going to the playoffs and to the SB - the division they are in is made up of midget leaguers. When the Colts were in the AFC East they didn't do squat - but leave in the middle of the night in 1984. I bet they like their new division much getter. They get to play in a dome and all of their away games are in nice weather. Re-alignment was a pretty nice thing for them and when they count their SB rings I don't think they feel like cowards either.

I don't care about geography, I care about rivalries. I couldn't care less about beating the Bucs or the Jaguars or whoever else. I want the satisfaction that comes from battling with the Pats, Bills, and especially the Jets. I don't want to get to the playoffs because we're in a division full of also-rans and bottom feeders; I want to get into the playoffs because we're a great team, a team capable of holding its own against anyone in the league.

In the early 90s, the Patriots were the laughingstock of the NFL. Then Parcells took them to the Super Bowl. Then they were awful again. But since 2001, they've dominated this division like no other team has, before or since. That should be our goal, not whining about how tough our schedule is and who we have to play. The Patriots built a dynasty, why can't we do so as well?
