If you had WR's dropping balls like that you would too, Mallett is playing very well.

I think his reactions when on the ground are fairly unrelated to the dropped passes.

Adams is just awful. He needs to invest in some stickum.

Well he has never won any character awards....and never will, but they are down 18 at halftime and have left plays on the field...

Pryor is outplaying him but Mallet has made some real nice throws.

Mallett is brilliant...from waist to neck.

It's more of the same. The big difference is he's taken to improving his touch on the back shoulder throws and fade patterns, hitting the outside shoulder, dropping it down the chimney. That's not something he showed much this year. But he still shows no willingness to drop the ball in the bucket in between zone defenders or to do so in man on the out pattern from the slot. And he's still not good at dealing with pressure. In one night he's taken half the sack total that Brandon Weeden took all year. His ball placement on short passes is bad as ever. And, he's showing as much bad attitude and selfish throwing as ever. He doesn't know what a throwaway is.

He's got his issues. His ball placement is inconsistent, and he has issues with feeling pressure. In many ways, he is similar to Chad Henne. One thing he has that Chad Henne doesn't. Confidence. Ryan Mallett believes he can put any pass in there. Overall, I think he does an above average job of reading the field, making a decision, and getting the ball out. You rarely see him standing there patting the ball, and when he does, he usually steps up into pressure.

One thing about this game. Cam Heyward is destroying DeMarcus Love. Heyward looks like a 1st round pick in this game.

To add, Ryan has a much better foundation for me to build upon than Cam Newton does. I'm not going to have to teach Ryan Mallett how to be a drop back passer or how to read complex coverages, and I also don't have to run an offense that won't work in the NFL for him. With Cam Newton, I'm either going to spend the next 5-6 years teaching him how to be a drop back passer, or I'm going to run an offense based around the zone read and the inverted veer with a passing offense that does little more than smash concepts. IMO, Cam's only hope of succeeding in the NFL is if he goes to Buffalo to work with Chan Gailey, or he goes to Detroit to work with Scott Linehan.

If we draft Mallett, our regime should be able to take care of that. :shifty:

I though Henne played with confidence at Michigan.

Does Mallett know anything about touch? (outside of playing with his wiener)

He's not fit for our current offense IMO...... and I'm not sure if he didn't just play himself out of the 1st round.

That was just a plain bad read. He didn't read the zone blitz at all. Ryan makes bad throws when pressured. This is why even if he's on the board at 15, I'm not sure I would take him. If I'm looking at Ryan Mallett, Mark Ingram, and Justin Blackmon on the board at the 15th pick, then I'm probably taking Mark Ingram or Justin Blackmon.

I'd rather see an offense with Henne throwing to Marshall, Blackmon, and Bess/Hartline than Mallett throwing to only Marshall, Bess, and Hartline.

There has been a lot of talk about quarterbacks here, but the guy I've been watching some film on lately is Pat Devlin from Delaware. I'm really liking what I'm seeing. If there is a QB in this draft that is similar to Chad Pennington, it is Pat Devlin. He's very accurate, has a quick release, scans the field fast and makes quick decisions, makes big plays with his arm, and protects the football. Granted, it is at a smaller level of competition, but the guy has 22 touchdown passes to 2 interceptions. Combine that with a near 70% completion percentage, and you have a heck of a QB prospect.

Would you rather go after Devlin so that Henne is still afforded another year to prove himself under a new OC while Devlin is developing.... or would you prefer to go all in and trade up for Gabbert, kissing Henne an instant goodbye?

I'm undecided on that right now. I'll be honest with you. Chad Henne showed me that he is lacking gumption and leadership when he didn't tell Brandon Marshall to shut it up after Brandon ran his mouth all last week and put on his disgraceful, Terrell Owens-like sideline show when he wouldn't even talk to Henne but yucked it up with Tyler Thigpen.

After watching this game, I now have more evidence of why I don't want to draft a QB in the first round, or even third round. This guy can make any throw in the world (but, so can Henne). Difference between Mallet and Henne? Mallet has no NFL experience, Mallet acts like a baby on the field (reminds me of Jay Cutler and Phillip Rivers), and Mallet is more valuable than Henne right now...which is bad. If Henne fails next year, then we let him walk. If we draft Mallet and he turns out to be a bust, then not only we waste a 15th over all pick on him, but we also have to hang onto him for a few more years.

Mallet also looked terrible whenever Ohio State sent pressure. That worries me a lot.

Oh and btw, this was the one guy that I wanted to take if we were to draft to draft a QB high this year. That leaves me with 0 guys I want to take in the first few rounds at QB.

Good point to be taken. I hope word makes its way back to Chad so he can choose to grab this thing by the balls rather than getting kicked in em, you know. If he doesn't change after a full offseason dedicated to addressing these obvious concerns (among others), then he deserves any detrimental fate that comes to him. I'm pulling for the kid b/c I really feel this regime has mentally destroyed him.

That can't be right can it? (checks out window to see if pigs are flying)

In all honesty though, I agree. I want to like Mallett so much, but he just does so many things that really keep me from getting on board with him. I'd be more than happy with either Ingram or Blackmon. Either one of those guys takes this offense to another level.

    here's the worst case scenario:

    -We draft Mallett.
-He sits behind Henne his first year (which he would do if we're playing the guy who gives us the better chance to win next year).
-Then a new HC takes over in 2012 who wants nothing to do with Mallett, which leaves us wasting a 1st round pick that could've been used on a WR to better help develop Henne and/or whatever QB our future coach drafts.

(either that or a new OC & QB coach get Henne back on track and Mallett's never able to steal the job)

I agree with this except for the Newton part. I'm still not completely sure about him, but I think I'd be willing to take a shot on that kind of ability. I doubt he's there for the Dolphins though so it probably doesn't matter.

Then would you agree that if we're trading up for someone that Gabbert would be the better way to go? (considering moving up to #1 isn't happening)

Better way to go? Yes, absolutely. He looks like the surer thing definitely. I might be willing to move up for Newton as well though if you can't get Gabbert. I just think it's time to go out and take a shot on a big time talent at QB. If you miss it's going to set you back, but if you hit it's going to put your organization in a great spot for the next decade. Taking the safe route rarely pays off big and this team has taken the safe route far too much at the QB position. I think it's time to change that.

FWIW , Matt Millen was talking about QB's and he has not seen Newton but loves Luck , and likes Gabbert a lot and Mallett.

Now Mallett may prefer that Millen didn't give him his stamp of approval , but c'est la vie.

I did notice last night that Mallett kept reference to next year as he was coming back. Of course could have just been in the moment.

Here's my opinion. The thing I think Chad Henne showed this year that I don't like is a lack of mental toughness. You will have to follow me on this.

I have absolutely no issue with the philosophy that is in place. This coaching staff tried stressing to Chad to make as few negative plays as possible and be smart about when to take your chances. The fact that he struggles with that shows me that he lacks certain instincts for the position, and I don't know that those are instincts he will ever gain unless he is put into a system that completely maximizes what he does well and minimizes what he doesn't do well.

The latter is what I feel this offensive coaching staff didn't do. They were right in stressing protecting the football. Where they were wrong was their implementation of it. Our play calling this past year was borderline insane at times. The utilization of our best offensive players was also off.

Chad has a lot he needs to work on, and I wonder if he would have been better off sitting this year and soaking it in from the sidelines. He has to get better at knowing when to take a shot and when to check it down. He also has to get better at knowing when to throw the ball away and not force the pass into double coverage. His INT against the Patriots in the first half was a passed that he forced to Marshall who was double covered, but most of his INTs were because he forced the ball to Marshall, which is one reason why I say a receiver like Marshall is more of a detriment to a young QB. He has to get better at setting the protections, and he has to get better at moving within the pocket to avoid the rush.

The interesting thing is, I look at Ryan Mallett and I see the exact same issues.

I want no part of Cam Newton. A one year wonder in a spread offense. Not something Id be very comfortable with. btw, anyone else love DJ Williams? reminds me of a more athletic version of Tony Moeaki

pretty spot on assessment. the two things i see different with mallett is the guy has much more confidence in his arm then henne did at michigan (wont even compare him now) and he's slightly better moving then henne was in michigan. mallett has that gunslinger mentality which will either carry him to greatness or crash him into the ryan leaf type

With Cincinnati rehiring Marvin Lewis we can scratch Carson Palmer off any list of potential QB's for next year.

Lewis was emphatic that Carson is and will be his QB next season. That also means the Bengals won't be drafting a QB in round one , imo.

So, tell me. How long do you think it is going to take to change Cameron's instinct to run when his first option isn't open to more of a read the ENTIRE FIELD both presnap and postsnap, read complex coverage schemes, and make a decision to get it to the open man, all the while protecting the football, setting his protections at the line, and getting his offense lined up when he's not in the hyperdrive no huddle scheme that Gus Malzahn runs? Vince Young hasn't figured it out, and Michael Vick is in his 10th season and still hasn't figured out how to identify a blitz.

If we're talking about mastering it, maybe 5-6. If we're talking about being able to do those things at a high enough level to win games, I think 2-3 is a possibility if he puts in the work. For me, which coach is teaching him will have a huge impact on this though.

For me, I see a lot of the same things with Mallett as I do with Henne. Makes some throws that almost no one else in the world can make, but on others looks awful in both how the balls are thrown and the decisions that are made. Mallett has more of a "I'm going to throw this ball here and I don't give a crap who likes it" mentality which both is a good and bad thing. You like to see a QB who has that type of confidence, but you wish he'd be a little smarter and less selfish. With Henne you like that he's trying to make the smart play, but wish he'd be a little more confident and a little more selfish. The one thing though with Mallett is he seems to throw a much more accurate deep ball. This is an area Henne has struggled with his entire time here and I believe had trouble with in college as well (the experts can correct me on this). If Henne would hit some of these deep throws to open WRs I think you could forgive some of his other mistakes. But because he isn't giving you those big plays it just adds to the frustration.

Those kind of pretty passes are the reason he could get into the 1st round to begin with, but IMO he needs just as much work on developing his game as a 4th rounder would. I love his deep pass, but I try not to become too overly enamored by it to where it leads me believing he can easily develop the rest of his game. If he can round out his play, then he could become a serious stud, but I feel he's at least 3-4 years away from that. A team like INDY should draft him so they can let him sit and learn behind Peyton for a while w/o the stress of immediate performance resting on his shoulders.

That was not as great of a game as some will make it out to be IMO. The pick in the end really summed it up. I actually gave Mallett a chance to make me reconsider my evaluation of him and it didnt' change. I thought that he would finally step up late and he didn't.
