W Allen, Sapp and Carroll have not been mentioned in 2011 plans. I'm curious as to what everyone thinks of them. W Allen was a VG CB for us, getting a lot of money, and coming off another injury. I can't see him starting at CB but, is he worth keeping as a back up? Can he takes Sapp's place in slot coverage? Could he be a safety option, similiar to what Philly did with Troy Vincent? I was not impressed with Sapp at all, and think he should go. Carroll has shown talent, and needs experience. I do like him at CB but, there is a log jam there. Can he take over slot coverage? I don't see moving him to S. Opinins?
Allen played well some games but others not well at all. Sapp, like the other poster said, MEH, take him or leave him. Carrol definately needs to be worked harder and see what or if we really have anything. I was one in the corner that our passs defense wass horrible this year, horrible, especially over the middle. Teams killed us there. Run defense was good, pass defense suked apples.
i liked Sapp for what he was. I mean jesus, the guy was the nickel or dime back. you shouldnt be expecting darrelle revis. i liked carroll alot but mostly for his potential which he flashed here and there and i would be very cool with bringing will allen back
He got beat way too many times for my liking. I would say that he also dropped a lot of potential INT's as well, but everybody in the secondary had that problem last season.
I hope we cut Allen & Sapp, then use the money to bring in Johnathan Joseph. Vontae and Joseph could start, with one of the two sliding inside to play the slot in nickel while Sean Smith comes in to play outside. That'd be a pretty damn good 3 some. If we cant get Josepth, Cromartie's a lesser option, Vontae would have to play the slot with Cro & Smith outside in that scenario. Carroll and a ST guy/project to fill the 5th spot and IMO we'd be set for years.
I wouldn't cut Will Allen. I would like too see him and Carroll have a competition for the nickel spot.
Will Allen is what, 33 now? And he hasnt played a snap since week 7 of 2009. And he makes more (7+million) than the rest of the CBs, combined. He needs to go IMO. That money is better spent on Joseph or Cromartie IMO. Or if you think we're set at CB, we can spend it on Mankins, Santonio Holmes, Deangelo Williams, or another offensive player. Or we could give it to Wake and/or Soliai as part of an extension. But I'd hesitate to roll the dice 7million times hoping that Will Allen is a) healthy this year and b) anywhere near as good as he was 2 yrs ago and 2 knee surgeries ago.
Help me out man, Im still sobering up and my memory is bad right now. Which games was he getting beat way too many times in? I may need to go back and have a look. I remember the dropped pick 6 in Buffalo, maybe one more, but thats it. Amnesia again I guess. How many drops did he have, do you remember who they were against? Thx in advance.
Everything depends on how the new CBA is set up. Depending on the salary cap and if things go the owners way there could be a little extra money for free agents if there is a ceiling put on the rookies. Will Allen was a damned good Cb before he got injured. Now if he can get back to full speed, he'd be worth keeping. That might be a big if, but we have to remember that this season, it looks like Free Agency will be after the draft so by cutting players it will be taking a huge risk that they can land who they want to replace the cut players....
Will Allen is washed up man. You didn't like Sapp but you want that guy back. Allen can't stay healthy and hasn't played in a while. Both are usually good signs that is time to call it quits. WA won't help this football team now. We have moved on.
Allen was a good corner but is getting up there in age and has had the injury bug. I'd try and regnegotiate his salary to bring him back as depth and insurance if one of the starting corners is injured. Sapp to me was a disappointment and I think the coaches agree as Carroll seemed to be getting his PT as the season progressed. Carroll seemed to progess over the season getting more PT and making contributions on ST. As a 5th round pick his salary has to be very affordable so I don't see him going anywhere.
W. Allen was an outstanding cover corner despite not getting many turnovers. Two years of injury and aging make him questionable. I thought Sapp was synonymous with sucks last year. Sapp can easily be upgraded. It seemed that 90% of the time a WR made a play and the DB was running 1 or 2 yards behind him it was either Sapp or Clemmons. Carrol is young and fast who has the potential to get better and fills a ST need so I would be surprised not to see him on the roster next year.
Sapp was beyond terrible at the beginning of the season .... he did make some amends with positive plays in the 2d half of the season ... but with Carroll taking over the starting CB, Smith playing in nickel .... not sure where Sapp fits, plus we still have a couple others on IR. Will Allen, i see as a trade bait, or if he stays for some reason -- Sapp would surely be gone. we are pretty good at CB and S .... the only thing we are lacking is that stud S .... Jones showed some playmaking ability -- but i don't think he is a Sanders or Polamalu
We have a whole lotta talent in our DB's. Most are still learning the game. What will "Chef Nolan" prepare for this year? He has had a full year in seeing what these guys can do, and they have had a full year in trying to understand what he wants. I believe, as a Mr Simpson (aka Homer) that this D will be the best we've had.
I do like Carroll but, in no way will he take over for Smith. Smith is a Pro Bowler in progress. JMO.
i think Carroll might have a chance to be better than Vontae .... that's how good i think he can be. he was certainly better than Smith was in his Rookie season on the corner. regardless of who we think is better than who ... the good news is that we have some serious talent at CB - and all young. would like to keep one 'older - mentor' around next year, whether that be Allen or Harris - don't really care. Clemons, Jones and Amaya show real promise at S ..... i would consider bringing in an older proven S to take Bell's place and to help mentor our youngsters to 2 years.
Carroll and his 3 tackles and 2 passes defensed is on a path to be better than Davis? And he was better than Smith who contributed 39 tackles and 12 passes defensed as a rookie? Are you sure you were watching Carroll because he really wasn't on the field that much on defense to be given such high praise.
adam, yes - he has more speed and playmaking ability than Smith ...... is the call on Davis over the top -- it might be, but i'll wait til after next year to pass judgement on that one. I absolutely believe that Carroll will be starting opposite Davis next year ....
