http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2011/02/cleveland_browns_qb_colt_mccoy_2.html Colt McCoy is widely considered to have shown positive promise after his Rookie season under Daboll, which perhaps makes the job Daboll did in Cleveland better in retrospect as his 3 Qb's he opened the season with all suffered injuries, oddly enough 3 serious ankle sprains, and he wound up playing a Qb straight off of the couch.
Daboll's strength is supposedly his QB work. In a perfect world, you grab a vet to start (I do think Young qualifies), let Henne backup, and groom a young guy. If I had to pick between Thigpen and a mid-rounder like McElroy as a developmental prospect, I'm picking McElroy and looking to trade Thiggy for something (anything).
....move over buddy, you have company. Eh, make of it what one will, to me it just seems to muddy up the water a bit more, 4 Qb's and 2 really poor starting Wr's, what exactly was Daboll to work with in Cleveland? Mangini was married to those Wr's and they just did not come through for him or Daboll.
Well, I've started threads about adding VY so that sounds like a good plan to me, but failing that a Thigpen v Henne Camp competition would also be fine with me as I like Thiggy and he does not have the baggage that VY has attached to himself. Or maybe they take Cam Newton?
Hard to make an opinion on Daboll coming from the Brownies,he is still somewhat of a mystery,it's not like he was working with a great offence.I just hope he does well.
So you make this statement and in the next breath say Henne is automatically the backup. If Henne gets a guy to work with him and use his strengths he doesn't stand a chance? Sorry man but just a ridiculous post that automatically anoints VY who isn't even here yet and alienates a young QB who is here. When will people get it through their thick skulls that Henne will get a chance. Besides what kind of comp are you willing to deal for Young. They aren't letting him walk. And then there is the contract. Think people think.
Hey now, we have 7 more months to plot out Chad Henne's demise as a Starting Qb in Miami, do not go crushing our dreams and stuff man!
http://weblogs.sun-sentinel.com/spo...g/2011/02/hyde5_why_kosar_likes_brian_da.html I posted this in the Daboll thread in the club, thought I would fit here also.
When you have a WC hybrid imposed on you that conflicts with your style you are bound for some sort of failure. Thus the lack of identity. Hillis was it. Colt McCoy's development as small as it was still evident in a cross bred situation.
Thank your for implying my post was ridiculous and thick-skulled. I believe Henne is a fine developmental prospect that belongs firmly on our roster. I also believe is too inconsistent to be a starter and lacks adequate pocket presence, hopefully that will change. I see nothing, for example, which indicates Ryan Mallett is a better prospect than Henne, but few would argue that Mallett is a day 1 rookie QB. Henne will improve with better coaching, but I wonder how much. Henne would be an excellent backup, in the way that Channing Crowder would be an excellent backup. And on a perfect team, they would be. There won't be many obvious upgrades to Henne out there. I'm a VY proponent because you can never have enough young QBs on the roster who have had success in this league. Other guys I would consider include Hasselbeck, Palmer (both of whom may not be available), and Gradkowski. The closest I would come to 'anointing' one of these guys is with Hasselbeck (actually my preference) and Palmer. Guys like Young and Gradkowski should have to win the spot in TC. My favorite QB (not named Gabbert) in the draft is McElroy, for what it is worth. Henne has shown us enough not to panic and over-draft Mallett or Locker. I'm not in a favor of a round 1 QB this year. As for Vince Young compensation, I probably would not trade for him at all. 12 million per is too expensive. If I had to make a trade, a 5th and Thigpen is where I would start.
Im not sure how an article that doesnt mention Daboll at all has anything to do with him. Is your inference that because he had crappy injured quarterbacks, then he is actually a good coach? A good coach would have gotten better than 31st in scoring, despite injuries and setbacks to the offense. The Pats finished 11-5 after losing Tom Brady and replacing him with Matt "havent started since high school" Cassel. Not saying I expect that from the Browns, but its hard to give Daboll the benefit of the doubt considering they finished just as poorly the season before. Only time will tell the true story on this new coaching staff. Digging up articles about mysterious injuries to Browns quarterbacks is not going to instill any confidence amongst Dolphins fans.
We may as well throw in the towel for the season and start talking with Andrew Luck's agent in October. That would be a DISASTER...
Well hell my apologies. Even though I have some disagreements with some of your points at least you have the ability to put together some thoughts on the issue. I do agree with you on Mallett. I'm not a big fan at all. As much as people have a beef with Henne I could never understand why the same people would want Mallett. His accuracy is very poor and his pocket awareness is worse. As for some of the vets you mentioned I give you an A for at least creativity. I just think VY is a headcase. We know he has talent but that only goes so far if you are uncoachable. Someone here brought up the idea of dealing with Denver to recoup our second. I tossed in the idea to try and make Kyle Orton part of that deal. Something along the lines of moving out of the #15 for their #36 and #46. The same person said the value is close. My idea was to have Orton be thrown into a deal like that. I know I know here comes POD to tell me it all depends on the CBA and all but we already know that. This way we get two secound round picks and a veteran QB for competition with Henne. You get out of the #15 that has too much value anyways for our needs IMO. Hey it sounds crazy but just might work. Anyway just riffing and once again I'm used to posters slamming Henne just for the hell of it and I sorta batched you in that group. My bad.
I have no quibble with that strategy Killahp, I think Orton is highly underrated and on the upswing, and for our needs 2 #2's would be perfect. We need a overall upgrade on offense, not just a Qb, so 2 #2's or even 1 #2 and 1 #4 would be fine. Figure, Starting Qb, Starting Running Back, Starting Olinemen potentially, that is a solid haul of talent. Or..the #15 overall for Elvis Dumervil....
Whats the worse that could happen......we have the 29th ranked offense in the league......Dabolls been there and will excell...he may even make it to #28
