    2. Miami Dolphins: Give Bill Parcells some credit. He was patient and made great decisions. First, he signed OT Jake Long to a five-year contract. The left tackle who will anchor the line will be at every minicamp and every day of training camp. In the second round, Parcells got 276-pound defensive end Phillip Merling. Parcells likes big bodies on defense. Merling fits the job requirements. The bonus was getting Henne of Michigan with the 57th pick. That Miami didn't take Henne at the top of the second round was a vote of confidence for John Beck. Parcells got the best of both worlds. Henne can push Beck and veteran Josh McCown.

I agree with the analysis. I am still amazed by the Chiefs first day, it was a great first day for them.

If it's because you think Beck is the teams future starter then I don't think you should be. Here's why.

If Parcell's and Co. didn't think Beck was this teams starter, they wouldn't have gambled on waiting until pick #57 to get Henne.

If they really really wanted Henne or Brohm, they'd have traded up from 57 or taken him at 32.

Here's what I believed happened: They took Merling and said let's go with Beck. Then, surprise, a guy they like falls into their lap and is still there at 57. They say, "what the heck! what if beck plays awful? we'll have Chad to back him up...and at 57 what's the big deal...we got our guy in Merling in rd. 2 already."

Remember, Detroit, Chicago, Minnesota twice, GB...they all passed on Henne. Parcell's couldn't have forseen this at #32.

Bottom line: I think our FO was confident that both Brohm and Henne would've been gone at #57, which means that they had every intention of going into the season with Beck and McCown as the guys. However, Henne was there and they took him.

I think Beck should be the starter and I think he will be the starter, but let's face it, we haven't seen enough yet and he's unproven. The little that we did see wasn't that great. There's a chance that Beck could be horrible this season, and with that in mind taking Henne was a great insurance policy especially at 57.

the chiefs had a hell of a first day today there was no beating them but the phins being 2 means a lot this is the first time in a while i have been very excited about a draft long/merling/henne i mean great pickups

i think beck and henne will have a fierce competition from everything i have seen on tv and read parcells really likes henne i think henne will eventually be the starter

Tuna & Co. really, really wanted Henne. As soon as GB picked Brohm, our war room erupted with cheers and applause.

We have been able to get a lot of bang for our buck this year and I don't know how anyone could be unhappy with that.

    Good post... I agree!

It's nice to have the "problem" of 2 young capable QBs with a lot of potential on the roster IMO.
It's a winning situation if you ask me.

    Yeah, thats all great, however.
If Beck is the starter, then we basically just wasted a pick where there was TONS of talent.

I like Henne, cept I think he is going to have a real tough time in the Pros. Hope he proves me wrong.

I think anyone who believes that Parcells, Ireland and Sparano consider Beck to be our future are totally misreading this draft. Beck is the child of the previous regime, and like the children of the czar after the Russian revolution, his fate will likely be a cruel one.

This is typical. And I understand it, although I don't agree.

Since JJ left (and even his last two drafts) we have all had the feeling that we could do better. But I think those days are behind us.

This FO has shown, if nothing else, that they have a system in place.

Putting our emotion aside, we cannot expect this FO to risk their tenure by "betting" on John Beck. That would be so absurd as to be negligent. I think Beck will enter camp with a slight edge, but for all practical purposes it'll be an open competition. The best palyer will start.

But I know Fins fans (and how emotional and irrational we can be) and I don't expect some to EVER come to grips with the Henne pick. I mean, how dare this front office not see what so many of us on the message board see, that Beck just needs a chance?

Its just something that we'll debate forever.

If they didnt have plans for him, I SERIOUSLY doubt they would've put in the exclusive/extensive time with him the last couple of months......but only time will tell

Although I think this is correct, I think most "message board experts" are not going to agree. They think Beck is THE MAN, and they'll be damned if our coaching staff and GM know better than they do.

Yes. I drank orange juice. No vodka yet, though...

They did their due diligence to see what they had. It would have been negligent not to...you wouldn't want to go draft a QB high if you had a potential HOFer sitting there on your team already.

Dont be peeved about Henne Dolfan. QB is still unsettled and too important to count just on Beck. I think Beck will be our starter, but if he does struggle its great to know we have Henne ready to compete.

I think we may have finally taken care of our QB situation where we have a full roster of QB's that can lead our offesne. Thats well worth a late 2nd rounder even if Henne is only a backup.

This is ridiculous. Rick doesn't drink and his post is clearly sober and intelligent. As a matter of fact, he has been one of the most intelligent and reasoned posters on Fins message boards for years.

His point was that Beck is going to have to seriously "outplay" Henne to start. And if thats the case (not sure I agree) but it wouldn't be so different from most other new staffs. The first thing many do is install their own QB. Its their job on the line, they want to make sure they have a guy that fits their system and totally buys into what they are doing.

I personally think Beck is going to get a fair shake, but it could be that the staff has already decided that he's not the long term answer, in which case Rick is right on point.

In any case, hes not drunk, irrational, or blinded by emotion. To suggest so means you haven't read enough of Rick's posts.

You will have to explain this to me. We have TONS of needs, and there are still several STARTING QUALITY players on the board. You go after a backup instead?

That's great and all, and I even believe that was the case, they saw Henne as great value. But the fact remains that we just used a very high and valuable pick on a position that we might already have an answer for.

I really hope that we address the defense a wee bit more than we did yesterday, and by "wee bit" I mean alot more D. :)

I wish you were right but thats not the way Bill works. Chad Henne will start because he is "Bill's Guy" and if he fails then we may see John or we may not. I hope they trade him, John that is, myself.

I think way too much homerism is being put to work on Beck's talent level. So he might pan out, might, being the operative word. Parcells and crew need to start developing thier QB now, not in another year after finding Beck isn't the answer. I think They have settled the QB position as a need for now. Seeing as it can often be considered the most important position on the team, I think this was a good pick for Henne.

We won't know who had the best draft for another 3 to 4 years most likely. So all this right now is just speculation. However I do like our picks.
