I think the same of them as I do every FO and coach - it's a business, and they're not starting the day with guys that they're not sold on. They picked Henne, and Henne will be groomed to start before the decade is out. I'm disappointed to be certain, but it's their decision no? It'll take a couple of years before we're good enough to see the difference (providing we actually are getting better players), and at that time I'll be over it.
I hope they do give him a chance. He may turn out not to be the best, but, atleast he should be given a fair shot, no matter whose running the team this year.
NO offence, how can you possibly know witch qb will start. IF it is true i'll give you your props. There will be a competetion at Qb the best one wil start.
Ireland made it clear that the Cowboys liked Beck last year coming out of college. With this year's draft, he also made it pretty clear that he wasn't quite as impressed with our O-line. Poor O-line always means poor QB play. It doesn't matter how quick your release is or how fast your feet are; nor does it matter how much experience you have. Drafting Long #1 overall, trading up to draft Murphy, and the Smiley signing all point to the FO's dissatisfaction with last year's O-line. To me this was a major overhaul. They're going to give Beck a chance to prove himself behind a competent line. If you don't believe that then so be it. No way in Parcells' world of football does Henne start this year. The competition for starter is going to be between Beck and McCown. If Beck can't beat out McCown then I guess he's proven his critics to be correct. Now as far as what the Henne pick might say to Beck........if Beck shies away from competition for the starting spot then we're better off without him. I suppose it could compare to drafting Rivers after Brees was less than stellar. All of a sudden Brees picks up his game and raises eyebrows. This is what competition is supposed to do for a competitor.
At this point I think the safest bet is no bet at all. We don't know what the FO thinks of Beck right now. I would have thought it a big mistake for the FO to put all their eggs in Beck's basket. QB being one of the premier positions, you have to maintain a plan B....otherwise you become mudbogged in mediocrity.
It's been reported that the Dolphins draft room cheered when Henne fell to us at 57. Out loud. Literally. There's no competition, just the time spent prior to Henne starting.
Couldn't have said it better myself. In fact my bet is that John Beck is cut or traded before this season starts. Parland brought over the kid from NC (who was in Dallas) so he will be our third QB not John. That way all 3 QBs will have been brought in by the present FO. Thats just the way it works guys.
I don't think that's likely. I think they keep him around for insurance until next offseason, just in case Henne doesn't pan out.
Pretty bold prediction there. Tough to envision that happening, although the LoBook trade came as a complete surprise so I guess all bets are off...
Henne was a value pick. If they had serious reservations about Beck, they would have not waited until 57 to pick a QB. I think Beck can be successful, but he's not really had an opportunity to show that yet. Two of the four games he started were in awful conditions (Philly & bad field in Pitt) - he had poor games against the Jets and Bills before he got pulled. However, that team was BAD last year, especially when Beck took over as he had no Ronnie Brown and no Chris Chambers. Ireland and Parcells picked Henne as a safety valve if Beck is not as good as they hope. They are working toward this team being playoff ready in 2-3 years and if Beck doesn't work out, they need a QB to step in who they do think can work out. It makes sense to have Option B on your roster now instead of waiting a year to draft him.
Sorry, but that makes very little sense. We have so many needs that if they were satisfied with Beck, there is no way they would have drafted a QB in the second round.
Well sure. But when your QB doesn't know where or when the next hit is coming, only that it is coming, then you can't expect him to play well. If your QB is going to have success at any level, he's got to have an OL he can depend on so that he can do his own job. When his primary concern becomes avoiding the pass rush he's losing his ability to be effective at getting the ball out.
Ron Wolf liked to draft QB's, you could never have to many, Who does Parcells listen to and respect? Ron Wolf. I don't think Beck is out of the picture by any means, I just think they are hedging their bets.
Cheering because a player falls to you is normal. Have you not seen any of these camera war room live feeds on ESPN? I remember when Jimmy Johnson and Co would be high-fiving in the 7th round. I'm exaggerating but still...I believe you are reading too much into a normal reaction. The idea of cutting John Beck is simply crazy.
Ok Guys and Alen.. I tend to disagree with this post.. I think that Beck wil be given a chance, and why wouldn't we take Henne or any good QB if they fell to us ( gee who was the dumb*&&T&*%) Coach that passed on one? Anyway to continue. To be a successful team in this league you MUST have 2 Talented QB on the roster to be successful long-term. I think that this was something you can't pass on. Let''s look at some of the other teams in the past. Joe Montana backup Steve Young Dan Marino backup Don Strock Bob Griese backup Earl Morrall John Elway backup Gary Kubiak Jim Kelly backup Frank Reich Brett Farve backup Aaron Rogers Mike Vick backup Matt Schwabb Drew Brees backup Phillip Rivers Now I know these aren't all household names or QB's that were going to the hall of fame but they could ALL manage a game or bring their teams back when they needed too. Now for the most evident Derrick Anderson Backup BRADY QUINN! We have all seen the write ups during the offseason about why you need a quality backup i.e the Brady Quinn Saga. Again this is IMHO
