The Kiper Brothers Recap Day Two of the 2011 GM League Draft.

The Kiper Brothers Recap Day Two

...and that's how we worked our draft room back in Calgary, and you thought the NFL's old 11 round draft was long. It took me all the back bacon and syrup I had to get me through that entire draft...

    Randy Kiper: Ahem, cameras.

Peter Kiper: Oh right, so Detroit isn't picking in the top five... I miss Matt Millen. At least there was a guarantee in the draft, but we could see them sink this pick faster than the auto industry....

Randy Kiper: Poor Detroit, they now have to deal with someone new... trades their quarterback away for next to nothing. I mean, as much as I love trades...

Peter Kiper: I guess the feeling was they could win without Stafford, which they were doing... but it would have been foolish to draft a quarterback with such a deep class here and no one worth a top fifteenth pick. Jimmy Smith is an interesting choice here

Randy Kiper: It certainly is, I expected Smith to fall somewhere in the 18 to 24 range, but certainly not at #13 overall. Smith is a cornerback with a lot of size and potential. I think he'll fit in just fine in Detroit because
Asomugha can make anyone look good.

Peter Kiper: I'm not thrilled about the position either, but he's a big physical corner that keeps receivers honest within the first five yards of contact. He's a good cover corner that can separate and take away the under route. The fact he's bigger it'll help just as much as having Asomugha on the other side. I'm ok with the selection, not thrilled. B+, he's just not as talented as Sean Smith was.

Randy Kiper: I think it was a bit of a reach and he could went after someone else being Asomugha. Mike Pouncey would have made a lot of sense right there, a bit of a reach but fulfills more of a need. I like Smith, but not at #12. However the circumstances justifies the pick. I give it a B.

Peter Kiper: Of course we'll have to take your grade with a grain of salt since no other corner is Patrick Peterson. This was not a fantastic selection, but you know what was... Da'Quan Bowers. HOW DID HE FALL HERE!?

Randy Kiper: You know, I'm just not sure. Bowers is a top five pick and there is absolutely no reason why he should have dropped so far. Shame on everyone past the #5 overall pick for letting him slide so far. What a complete steal for the Rams, could they be any happier?

Peter Kiper: I know I couldn't, it's not like he was Brady Quinn or something. Sure he's got some questions, but did you see this kid play? He's strong, polished and looks like a pro defensive end. One of the best bull rushes I've seen in a while and just when you think he's going to over power you, he cuts the corner and gets to the quarterback. The scary thing Bowers can only get stronger as he matures. DAYU-AMN.

Randy Kiper: He's an excellent future replacement for James Hall. I mean I am sure the Rams went into this pick thinking they would be drafting a receiver, linebacker, or something... but defense end? Not likely. And Da'Quan Bowes? No way. Major props to them, I gotta give them an A+.

Peter Kiper: The only thing sexier or better looking than this pick is Kate Upton hanging off my arm. A+ from me. I Don't think the next pick could match up, can it?

Randy Kiper: And it's a shame that you would be absolutely wrong. Meet Robert Quinn, a monster who can't even legally drink yet. Robert Quinn is a pure pass rusher who has the skills to be an elite defense end or in the Dolphins, outside linebacker, in the NFL. He has all the potential in the world and we seen what Miami did with Cameron Wake.

Peter Kiper: I think their defense is going to rival the Jets and could help them get past a .500 record

Randy Kiper: I think you may be right, it all depends on if Kyle Orton can put up stats in the offense. Miami is just flat out improving their team, whether the critics like to see big names move or not.

Peter Kiper: You got it right when you mention his versatility. It's scary to have a guy that can rush at you from the end or linebacker position. He'll allow the Dolphins to mix up their looks and I'll be damn if anyone wants to bring up the issue with his brain, because this is one talented player. Yeah he sat out a year, but just look at the tape, he's an A level talent. Bowers is Upton, and Quinn is Lexi Belle who can do just a little more to you, and leave any team down and dirty...A!

Randy Kiper: And I gotta give yet another A+ for this pick. It just reeks of pure value and there's no way this kid should have fell this far. He could have even been in consideration at #2 overall for Miami... good draft for them thus far.

Peter Kiper: Talking about number twos, I'm never using the bathroom after you again but what we have is the second tackle taken. Tyron Smith is talented, with nice size and balance and could end up like Sam Baker.

Randy Kiper: You're right, he has the athleticism to play either side of the line, however he really needs to up his strength. With a year in the weight room, it could really do him some good to make him a good right tackle in this league. The Cardinals has a definite need at right tackle, so I think this was a pretty solid pick.

Peter Kiper: He has the ability to develop into a left tackle, I think no one can get past his experience on the right side. He's a good pass blocker and that's exactly what they need for the Cardinals offensive system. Better value then the Giants got, A-.

Randy Kiper: I think he has some potential to be a left tackle in the NFL, but not quite yet. I'm not as high on the pick as you, but I will give it a B+. Good pick, but nothing spectacular.

Peter Kiper: Spectacular is the number the Cowboys did to me the year they drafted Chris Johnson, I think the drinking we did that night gave him a new sense, forget sixth sense. It was on the same level as Pi. Except I don't think he did it again here. He took the other half of last years famous lip lock. The less talented kisser, and lineman.

Randy Kiper: True enough, the question is whether Mike Pouncey was drafted based on his own success at Florida or his brother's success in Pittsburgh last year. I think Pouncey will wind up being a solid, but not spectacular player in the NFL. I certainly don't know if he warrants a top 20 pick.

Peter Kiper: Just like the two of us, the most underrated brother has a lot more versatility and talent than people see. The Gator staff was higher on him when they first went to Gainsville. You forget that Mike played on the defensive line and intercepted Chad Henne once upon a time. He spent the rest of his career at right guard, but what he's done shows just how talented and athletic he is, not to mention his strength. I see it as a very good fit. Just cause he's not as highly touted on his way to the pros, doesn't mean he couldn't meet or exceed his brother.

Randy Kiper: Lets just hope that the Cowboys' GM doesn't take him out for drinks to celebrate. I gotta give the pick a solid B.

Peter Kiper: I'll give it a B+, but am willing to move it up to an even A if he shows his brother he's picked up his kissing game. Don't look at me like that I know you're more than super charged at that idea.

Randy Kiper: You really are bad at reading people.. almost as bad as you are at reading into players strengths. Moving on we have the San Diego Chargers taking... wait for it... an offense lineman. Gabe Carimi reeks big time right tackle. I think he has the potential to be one of the better right tackles in the NFL, pesonally. Good thing he'll be playing across Marcus McNeill.

Peter Kiper: It's a good pick for them, I thought the Chargers got moved to the USFL with the amount of action I saw from them in the offseason. One of their areas of need was offensive line, they need a starter on the right side and some more depth on the line, so this was a natural pick. I'm going to give them an A for value and need.

Randy Kiper: I gotta agree with this one. It was a good pick and I will see your grade of an A. It was a good pick with solid value. I think the Chargers found their two anchors for the next 8 to 10 years.

Peter Kiper: Talking about 8 to 10 years... Out with the old philosophy that has worked for the last decade and in with the antithesis of the hooded one. I like the player, where he was picked but I'm just not use to see the Patriots consolidate picks to move up into the first round. Don't get me wrong, Watt is a perfect fit for their system...but...but I just can't, I don't know what to say

Randy Kiper: The Patriots also didn't trade 1st round picks away for receivers.

Peter Kiper: What they did was get Randy Moss for a fourth round and eventually became one of the best offensive teams in all of football in that magical year.

Randy Kiper: You're right, some teams just overvalue wide receivers and that new Patriots GM is one of them. I think they made the right pick on their pick at #19 overall in JJ Watt. Watt's middle name is intensity... and if it's really not, then it should it be. Where do you see the Patriots penciling in Watt?

Peter Kiper: Watt is going to be causing havok from the five technique with his non stop motor. He's a lot like Chris Long, solid and he'll keep coming at you. He just didn't have a famous daddy to help with his stock. Really he could have been a top ten pick. But I'm pretty sure the draft value chart was broken when trying to figure out the value of this pick. I'm torn between an A- and B+. I'm still fining them for spy gate. B

Randy Kiper: Watt certainly will be a player that will be great on the defense line. He has the intensity that teams love and you will need all of that you can get when you play on the line, especially on a 3-4 team. I am going to give the pick an A-, pretty good value and just overall a good pick.

Peter Kiper: Another good pick was Cameron Jordan down in Tampa, he's talented. Kind of a quiet love for Cammie, but then again Tampa has been quiet all offseason. It's solid, nothing special. So I'm not going to say much but whisper my B-.

Randy Kiper: It is a quiet pick and Jordan is a very good player.. extremely versatile and I think he could play any position on the line. Very nice move that will give McCoy a little bit of help; I give it a solid B.

Peter Kiper: Did you hear that? Crickets. It's like the stands during the Bucs years in an orange uniform. Hey look who's up again, the team that suffered from the Winter of Manning. Once again I got the Colts pick dead on, I must be in their head or something.

Randy Kiper: I think it's time you get off your high horse, it was fairly obvious the Colts needed a tackle... it's not like you predicted VCU's Final Four invitation. Solder is a good player who likely will be a good right tackle at the next level. I am not so sure about him playing left tackle, he seems like one of those guys who is a pure right tackle.

Peter Kiper: Here's the most athletic of all the tackles. He started out as a tight end and become a very good left tackle for Colorado. I think he can still bulk up and add to that frame. People forget Jason Peters was a converted tight end, and Solder is more athletic than Peters. Once he adds that bulk and gets stronger in a year or two he'll be able to Man-uh, protect the blindside for Flynn when he's ready. A+ for value, potential and help the Colts get over their clutch over the AFC South.

Randy Kiper: I just don't see him being a left tackle at the next level, but I guess everyone has their own opinion. I give it an A-, it's definitely good value and I like the pick.

Peter Kiper: I'm glad you can see things my way! Some common sense runs in the family. Now if only they had it in Houston. I might be dipping below a C for this next pick, after all the Texans made out with Julio Jones and now they walk away in the pits...

Randy Kiper: It's pretty clear they are going with the draft in pairs strategy, but is it a good idea to reach for one half of the pair? I don't think so. I think Baldwin can be a good player personally, but I guess the Texans sure are lucky they have a running game to give that passing game a break.

Peter Kiper: Here's the thing, only one receiver can catch the ball and how many looks throughout a game will Baldwin get with Jones as their number one? Let me tell you what's wrong with this. Baldwin is a second rounder, they didn't need to draft another receiver in the same round. They need to build depth in their 3-4, another end or nose tackle would have helped. I think Martez Wilson or Stephen Paea would have been the best fits here. A machine of an inside linebacker, or the world's strongest tackle.

Randy Kiper: I guess they at the very least got two receivers that compliment each other. With Kevin Walter in the slot, they should have a great receiving corp.. that is if they pan out. I think Baldwin can be successful in this league, but man what a risky pick this high.

Peter Kiper: Someone stole the down with the brown philosophy from a few years back. I think this D+ is all but justified with this pick.

Randy Kiper: Someone is a little harsh tonight.. I gotta give it a C+, not an ideal pick but it's not like the Texans GM went Al Davis on us.

Peter Kiper: Talking about Al Davis, what about that other team by the Bay. I heard Castro street erupted when the 49ers drafted a fireman.

Randy Kiper: Oh boy, get your stereotypes out there now.. You know this is an interesting pick and I kind of like it. Very versatile, I think he can play both guard and tackle. It might be a tad bit of a reach, but you know... everyone is doing it with linemen..

Peter Kiper: Reach? The only thing I'm reaching for is my fork because this pick is good, poutine good. His combination of nasty and mean on the field with his good guy persona off it is just as good as cheese and gravy on fries. Not to mention he's as strong as a lumberjack eh. He's drawn comparisons to Logan Mankins and rightfully so, he won't be at that level but like Dareus is a notch below Suh, this isn't so bad. Fantastic pick, best inside lineman in the draft. I'm going to give this an A+ and changing that Kenny Chesney song to "He's Got It All", potential, strength and a nasty demeanor.

Randy Kiper: I like this pick, but I do think he should have went maybe 3-4 picks later. I am going to give it an A-, the 49ers got an extremely versatile linemen who is going to be a starter for years to come.

Peter Kiper: Yes they do, hey Randy do you know what goes well with poutine?

    Randy Kiper: What's that?

Peter Kiper: Bush. Or lack there of. Like New Orleans losing out on Bush in free agency, because it opened the way for Ingram to fall into their backfield.

Randy Kiper: Congratulations, you just failed a free agency reference.

Peter Kiper: What he stayed with the Saints? Well there goes my hardwood line. Anyways, looking at my cards here... Ingram will be replacing Pierre Thomas, I guess they like Bush in the Gulf.

Randy Kiper: The Saints got quite the steal in Mark Ingram.. he possesses it all: speed, quickness, power, burst, intelligence... you name it. He's received comparisons to Emmitt Smith for good reason. Ingram will be an excellent starting back and will let Bush retain his usual role of change of pace/scat back.

Peter Kiper: The Saints get a good value here, he's worth more as a running back then Bush. I can't complain about the rich getting richer, and I doubt we see Ingram go down as often as Pierre Thomas, or the rest of the Saints backs. Did they invent dominoes down there? A.

Randy Kiper: I love this pick... I am giving them an A+ and won't be looking back. I will call this one of the steals of the first round, no question.

Peter Kiper: There was just as big a steal last year in the first round, that was Denver taking the man who stole my heart in the first round last year... Tim Tebow. You know I looked at him for inspiration to give up drinking this Johnny Walker black label...

    Randy Kiper: ...

Peter Kiper: Now where was I, oh right, the Broncos drafted next.

You're right, the Broncos went ahead and selected one of the best linebackers in the draft in Akee, Ayers. The talent pool at the linebacker position is lacking and Denver made sure they avoided that problem by selecting Ayers, an extremely talented linebacker who can do a variety of things.

Peter Kiper: That's right... wait.. they drafted the same guy two years in a row?

Randy Kiper: I think you're confusing two different Ayers.. The Broncos cut ties with the first round pick in 2009, Robert Ayers, and brought a new one to Denver.

Peter Kiper: Exactly, they brought in a very good Ayers. One who I consider the third best rushing linebacker, who happens to be a solid tackler. I'm sold on him just because he'll have such an inspirational leader in Tebow.

Randy Kiper: True enough, I think he'll fit in quite well at Denver at whatever linebacker role they place him. I give it an A-, definitely a good selection for Denver.

Peter Kiper: I give it an A- as well, wait. Let me just take a look at my What Would Tebow Do bracelet. Ok, an even A it is.

Before you say anything Randy... it's time for another quick break, when we come back I'm going to expect better grading, because I'm going to teach you exactly how you should be scouting these players. I even got them to send out a second glass.

so I overpaid for Greg Jennings and Larry Fitzgerald? Need I remind Schisno... i mean Peter that HIS Patriot mastermind Bill Belichick amasses picks by trading current ones for future ones... since that is an IMPOSSIBILITY for us here... well you see where this is headed. BTW, you know what was so magical about that almost undefeated Patriot season? The freshly stocked weapons that Tom Brady had to throw to. And I do believe Wes Welker was acquired for a 2nd and 7th round pick.

Yes they were restocked, but the Patriots weren't giving out first rounders as candy. Wes hadn't come into his own quite yet as the slot receiver he'd be, so I'm sure some were questioning if he was worth that second.

Besides you'd have to replace guys like Daniel Graham and Corey Dillon. So they added Donte Stallworth (declined the option on him after), Kelley Washington, Kyle Brady in FA. But really all they had to give up was a 2nd and 4th to retool that offense with Moss and Welker.

We'll do the rest of the 1st round then offer grades for the 2nd round. Then we may do a draft re-cap at the end. I don't think I could force myself into spending a few hours with schisno any more than I have to. :shifty:
