Look, I am extremely surprised we didn't draft a Quarterback, not even one in the later rounds like TJ Yates or Stanzi. After what we went through last year I was sure we were going to. But lets take a look back at things in a condensed timeline. In January, this is what Ireland had to say about the quarterback position and Henne.

Then a month later Ireland says this:

Obviously this is a soft endorsement. But remember the players he gave a ringing endorsement to? Wilford, Ginn, Wilson. They are all gone. This is the opposite end of the spectrum.

The next month, Sparano say's this about Henne.

Look, obviously they aren't completely sold on Henne, as no one is. But what they are seemingly trying to do is take away the molded offense for Pennington and cater it to Henne.

Last year we had 3 possession wideouts with one speed wideout who has decent speed. This is fine and dandy for someone like Pennington because this allows a ball-control offense due to Penny's RIDICULOUS ability with ball location. His ball location is just insane. You have a tight end who can create some space and has hands to pluck the ball out of the air and also caters to Penny. 2 RBs who cater to Penny even more. They get 4-5 yards per play which allows to eat up the clock. And finally an OC who is like a ball-control QB's wet dream. Biggest sign was the Colts game. That was exactly the Dolphins blueprint and what they had in mind.

In comes Henne, a quarterback who has iffy ball location but a cannon for an arm (I personally think he has a top 5 NFL arm) and can make every single throw in the field. You place him in the Penny offense and he fails. He cant manage a ball control offense. he's too dumb and makes way too many mistakes. Henning is an OC who wants smart safe decision. Not happening with Henne. What you can do with Henne is get him an OC who loves to take shots downfield and use routes like 20 yard digs and 20 yard comebacks and double moves and create massive spacing through speed and mismatches. This allows Henne more space for ball location and the ability to use his arm. You get Daniel Thomas, a player who can run out of 4 WR formations and is excellent at catching the ball and making players miss. You get Edmund Gates, who is a BLAZER and will create exponentially improved spacing for this offense and finally Charles Clay who can possibly be a mismatch machine. What you get is basically an offense catering to Henne's strengths and not Pennington''s.

They admitted last year's offense and philosophy wasn't built around Henne.

Look, I like Henne. I think he can turn it around. I'm not sure if this was the best approach to take due to his regression last year, but obviously the coaches believe it was the pieces surrounding Henne that caused our offense to suck rather than Henne regressing to the point of no return. Whether this a good idea or not, it still is to be seen. But we WILL get a FA QB and more speed weapons for competition.

Nice post RH. Good stuff buddy.

No QB will be successful if the surrounding cast and play-calling dont fit his skill set.

    But..who?

That is the 1 million dollar question, do we go Vet like Hasselback or Collins? Young vet who is mobile such as Young, Gradkowsky or Leinart?

    I think it goes
    1) Palmer (far and away)
    2) Hasselback
    3) Young

In fact, it might be Palmer or nothing. If you fail to get Palmer, you might instead look toward a high priced guy like Reggie Bush and just cross your fingers with Henne.

I have no idea. I don't think anyone other than Palmer is a better choice than Henne. And I'm iffy about Palmer too.

We must remember Henne was also playing on a bad knee last year.

I'm going with a guy who wont divide the team's allegiance---- someone who is expected to be the backup but will also challenge and push Henne. Maybe Marc Bulger.

I like VY poco, to me he offers the most for the least of any likely FA/For Trade Qb likely to be on the market.

Palmer would be good, but suspect Brown will want a mint for him, Orton would be good, but suspect Elway does not wish to go into 2011 with no Vet Qb,that narrows the pool of Qb's whom:

    -60% or so completion rate
    -more Td's than Int's
    -20 or more starts

That last one is surprisingly difficult to find, 20 starts is sort of the dividing line in the NFL, a darkhorse in that would be Gradkowsky:

    http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/G/GradBr00.htm

    20 starts

    Vince Young:

    http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/Y/YounVi00.htm

    47 starts

    Leinart:

    http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/L/LeinMa00.htm

    17 starts

    Orton:

    http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/O/OrtoKy00.htm

    Grossman:

    http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/G/GrosRe00.htm

    31 starts

Will not bother with Kolb as I cannot stand him or the thought of trading for him.

Quick glance, believe it or not Leinart and Young are the only 2 Qb's on that list who are close to a 60% completion rate for their careers..scary indeed..Go Robot Go!

Spend some cash on Darren Sproles the ideal third-down back. He can carry it say five times per game, great pass blocker even at his size, and can run for 4.5 YPC. Then sign Kevin Smith as well just as insurance or for some carries in general. Hey maybe you give Graig Cooper a call and give him a look instead?

If anything they give Noel Devine a look since he's cheaper and have him compete with Sheets. It's the RB position, fix the line you'll be fine.

Now what if..Randy Starks for Kyle Orton? We have Odrick waiting in the wings, we need a Vet Qb, Denver needs DT's badly.

Not with Merling and Odie coming back Jaj, if anything Starks real value to us dropped slightly but to the rest of the NFL he is coming off of a pro bowl season and has a cheap contract.

I'd pull that deal off in .03 of a second.

What do you think of Collins for the year. We are supposedly geared for the ground gm. and even though aged can be a threat in the air. Wouldn't cost much as a temp replacement. For I don't see anyone in the long term and really don't want to give up anything substantial for a temp.

our dline is our strength, and it should stay that way IMO. Teams don't become better by purposefully reducing a strength to a potential "what if". Merling isn't proven and neither is Odrick's ability to stay healthy. We also might not have McDaniel. We could go from great Dline to garbage Dline quickly with a few unfortunate circumstances.

Hey were on the same page here. You never know Solai could get injured or revert back to being more inconsistent. Starks is a beast and if not hurt top shelf. And we are going to need to have a good defense to go anywhere

yup, this is one example where it's very risky to rob Peter to pay Paul. Pods has a good idea if our Dline weren't the strongest unit of our team.

    Brian Hoyer or Gradkowski.

I still don't see how people still think we're going to give up that ransom Philly wants for Kolb.

Def can't see us being eager to give up a 3rd for Orton or Palmer either when we won't have a 2nd again next year (Marshall).

Hasselbeck will stay in SEA, imo.

Seems like everyone knows Bulger's going to AZ.

    lol What else is there?

Edit: I think I bashed VY enough to add him here.

I think that would be a solid move, Collins would be a stop gap, but he and Henne's games are so similar they could be twins.

    http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/C/CollKe00.htm?redir

    Collins first two seasons:

    1995 14 td's 19 int's 49% completions
    1996 14 Td's 9 int's 56% completions

    Henne:

    2009 12 td's 14 int's 60% completions
    2010 15 td's 19 int's 61% completions

But I like Vince Young a bit more than Collins.

Leinart just offers nothing really. We'd get the same thing w/ a lil more balls in Collins. lol That's sad when a 35yo takes more shots down the field than a 26yo.

VY, yea he's got the X factor. But aside from all his other downfalls, I don't wana see the ****ing WC on a regular basis. And that's where I'd assume we'd go if he was signed.

    "Punting is not a sin"

Leinart maybe learned something in Texas, either way though if he just checks down that makes for a good backup Qb.

As for VY..my thinking is he has loads of talent and Daboll used McCoy acceptably well in Cleveland so it would reason he could work with Vince Young, who can do the other thing backup Qb's have to do..create yards with his legs.

I would be incredibly surprised if it is Palmer. For many reasons , the primary one being that Mike Brown is the image you see when you look up stubborn. Michael Lomardi , who should know , said there isn't any way he is trading him this year. I believe Michael Lombardi and Mike Brown.

I know we are in the minority , but for the right price I also would take VY . To me it isn't his lack of football ability , it has been his attitude . If he focuses , works hard , he can be a winner in this league , hell he has without doing those things. A big if , yes , but players have changed , they would have to believe in him at the right price. Risk reward is there for me personally.

Bulger would be my choice, but he's got a wink wink, behind the back handshake agreement with Arizona right now.

Kevin Kolb will be too pricey. If you trade for him, then you are not having a competition. He will be the guy based on the fact that it is going to take at least a second round pick to get him, if not a first.

Carson Palmer will not be traded this offseason. Mike Brown will stick to his guns and will not move him.

Matt Hasselbeck is a possibility. I don't see him going back to Seattle.

Vince Young is horrible. Miami shouldn't make a play for either he nor Matt Leinart, because neither player is willing to put the work in. They both are more interested in being celebrities than being NFL quarterbacks.

Honestly, Miami's best bet may be to simply resign Tyler Thigpen and let him compete with Henne. I don't see anyone on the free agent market that is an upgrade to Thigpen, much less Henne.
