No surprise that Long was dominant. He owned Jared Allen in week 2, Harrison in week 6, and pretty much everyone he faced w/ the exception of Peppers. Woulda been nice to see how he fared vs Clay Matthews but he was hurt when we played them. Kinda sucks to have an all world pass protector in a division where none of our opponents rely on/have a legitimate edge rusher.

In 2010 ur pass pro problems were primarily on the interior. Lots of pressure in Henne's face, lots of batted balls, especially later in the season. The end of the Detroit game in particular, was a total embarrassment. Hopefully Pouncey can step in at C, allowing Incognito to go to RG with Garner/Jerry playing LG and Berger as a quality backup, which is what he is IMO. On paper that is a much better unit, with much better depth than what we had last year.

I had him as the Premiere Left Tackle 8 games into his rookie season...Good to see others finally recognize...I used to laugh when I saw Ryan Clady and Thomas ahead of him..Joe Thomas is good, he ain't no Jake Long.

The mans Get-off at the LOS is unmatched...He doesn't fall for BS dekes, his technique is just impeccable, his focus, work ethic, and dedication to his body, Elite..

Here's hoping Vernon Carey finally worked out with his best friend..

So Carey is only a middle of the road RT? You guys still wanna slide him over to a harder LT position and not draft the best LT in the league?

To be fair, of all OTs ranked in 08 Carey was #7 and Long #9. He was better on the pass, with Jake better on the run. In 09, Long was #2 and Carey #6. He was better on the pass, with Carey better on the run.

Last year was no contest. Carey was #25 and average. Long was #2, best on pass and run blocking. He lost out to Whitworth because of screen blocks and having 8 penalties.

I don't think anyone will argue that Carey didn't have a down year this year. But it wasn't horrible in any sense, and he was also playing through multiple injuries.

Carey was pretty good at LT in 2007. He wasn't as dominant as Long was, but at the time it wasn't unreasonable to suggest we'd be better off sticking with Carey.

RT and LT are still different. I think 9 at LT vs 6 at RT still looks good for Long in that situation.

The biggest problem with this is at this point, we would probably still be looking for a RT, maybe a LT after Carey's last year. Depending on how Carey graded out, we'd be looking for a QB Doctor too. May have even drafted Trent Williams which wouldn't have been to good.

Agreed, big difference and I don't think Carey would have been the answer at LT. I'm just hoping he reverts back to what he was before last season. It would be like signing a high priced proven vet, which is what we did with him, and a big improvement on the OL.

Thing that has my attention on Vern Carey (and Lydon Murtha if you think about it) is there were rumors of microfracture surgery on his knee last yr when he was shut down for the season, our backup T's:

    -Murtha
    -Garner
    -John Jerry
    -Derrick Martin
    -Copa

Garner would be the most sure thing, but we need him at LG, meaning of those 4, only JJ and Murtha have any sort of starting experience in the NFL, and JJ's was at RG.

Wow. Carey battled a load of injuries this year and it still put him squarely in the middle of RT's? People dump on him wayyyyy too much.

The only thing I wished Carey ever did was actually play around 320-330lbs instead of that 350. Especially as he's getting up there in years so it keeps him healthy.

Garner at Left Guard I think would limit their ability to run certain plays that Daboll liked to use in Cleveland. I don't think he would be able to hit on longer pull plays like Eric Steinbach could.

They may very well need someone not on the roster currently for LG for the best possible outcome, let everyone else hash it out for RG and then just have really good depth. When you're looking at it from a depth standpoint it seems hard to start your swing tackle when you got Incognito and Jerry in the mix.

May have to, as was said, Carey's knee is a question mark, that means RT and LG are then holes, if Carey is healthy then Garner or Berger makes sense for LG, or maybe Feinga, who knows? They may even keep Richie at LG.

Steinbach graded out rather poorly FWIW.

I don't know why they may "have to". If the season occurs, free agency will occur in some form, and regardless of what kind of free agency will occur, there will be options.

As for Carey's knee, the source is unimpeachable, but realize what was said... The knee might possibly be a micro-fracture issue, which might possibly continue to be a problem. Not that it *was* micro-fracture, and not that it will inherently cause a problem.

As for Steinbach, he's not a particularly good in-line blocker at this point in his career, which I agree with. One of my issues with Pro Football Focus is that "pulling guards" seem to not get great grades. If I had to guess I would think that they are grading good pulling plays under the standards as a good interior line play where a blocker knocks down a defender or drives him significantly when I think a pulling play should be graded on a player getting into position and not failing to make a block. I mean, you might have a good pulling play where a blocker is effectively leading a runningback down the field exactly where he should be, and doesn't make a particularly dramatic block but gets someone to half-*** taking on the blocker or walls someone off, etc. Consider that Justin Smiley had a pretty strongly negative run-blocking grade for 2008 here.

I think Miami might be in a situation where they might be in the market for a guy who isn't great in-line but makes up for it pulling or getting out to the second level in zones.

David Diehl is the 3rd worst in the league never played LT before 2007 and he owns a Ring. LT position = overrated. yes we could have/should have left carey at LT. Carey was pretty good at LT the one year he was there. all those injuries in a down year and he's average RT? that doesn't sound too bad.

You don't have to have an elite LT, but claiming it's overrated on the basis of David Diehl isn't particularly reasonable, especially when you are valuing what he did three years ago totally off of Pro Football Focus' somewhat flawed ratings.

There's a given and take to the situation. David Diehl sucks and the Giants won with him, but there's more to it than that. Having a Left Tackle like David Diehl can lose you games. The Giants have been successful, but it's not because you put David Diehl on an island vs. quality pass rushers. Remember that PFF list of teams using extra blockers? The Giants were in the same boat as Miami, but it wasn't because of bad quarterbacking decisions, it was out of need. The Giants had a top 10 offense last year, but the Giants were 28th on that league of blockers per play, where the Dolphins were 30th. How much did that hold them back?

And I guarantee you, Jake Long is a whole hell of a lot less responsible for that blockers per play number than David Diehl is his teams. An elite LT you can consistently put 1v1 against an elite DE with no help and expect him to be largely shut down. When you put Jake Long or Joe Thomas on the field vs any pass rusher besides it seems John Abraham, that can turn them into a non-factor by themselves. That is very valuable.

It's not as if the Giants team-building philosophy is somehow different than the Dolphins, either. Tom Coughlin as soon as he took over the expansion Jacksonville Jaguars took Tony Boselli #2 overall.
