    True. Good point.
   "I
I think, barring any injuries, we'll be o.k. at NT.....I hope.

I think we're going to be running such a hybrid type of D with many fronts and formations rather than just mainly a traditional 3-4, as is and will continue to be the case with most teams around the league, that Starks' versatility will be an asset. I think the Ratliff comparison is a good one.

This is going to be a crazy dangerous defense.

Just seeing different things. Different personnel. Different fronts. It'll be amazing. Being around other fans'll suck though. They'll be confused wondering if we're out of position. I just love the fact that we have so many different rotations for every situation.

The sports bar where I go to watch the games is infested with Patsie fans, and seachickies of course. You made me lol because in that first game when we busted out the Wildcat on the pasties they were all crying for illegal procedure calls and TECHNICAL FOULS:lol:

This is old but see how things unfold we found a great NT last year. One position we don't even question now.

why am I lost in this thread...we have one the biggest baddest dtackle's in the game...

    What is this from Sceeto.?

Ratcliff is top 3 imo, incredibly explosive, pass rushing skills from the nose, and found by Irish I believe in the late rounds...

Thats a nice litttle bit of confidence we can put in our belts for our GM.

Well, went back and relistened to Sparano's TC interviews from 2010 and what they wanted was passrushing out of the NT in base defensive formations, not sure who much Paulie provided in the way of passrush but do think he more then filled the hole.

Hopefully Starks can get his DE groove back as Wake and Starks would be a nice combination to run stunts and what have you with.

???? WTF? Dude!! Do you see the date? Why did you bump and rehash this? Obviously that was when we had some issues and injuries or whatever there and when we were talking about Starks playing some NT. I know Solai"s been very good. I've been very pleased with him. I know Ratliff is really good. I was using him as an example of a great player whom Ireland drafted whom has similar size to Starks. Ratliff is about 305. A little heavier, but not a 330-340 type guy. Taking things a bit out of context my man? Did you bump this? Weird.:up:

What raises my eyebrows is that someone who is 6'3" and 305 pounds is considered small.

Again: "Smartest Guys in the Room" syndrome.

The NT is supposed to take up two blockers; by design, that's not going to be a passrush position most of the time.

By playing a small/smallish NT, you are purposefully cutting your nose off to spite your face—pun intended. You are willingly giving up one of the key benefits of the 3-4, thereby weakening your Defense.

Needless to say, the experiment failed; as did the experiment of playing Strong Safety-types at Free Safety time and time again, stubbornly depriving themselves of the inherent benefit of having the two different positions on the field.

These meatheads believe that somehow they are smart enough to re-write the inherent rules of any given position (Pat White, anyone?) and have it all come up roses—something that only true geniuses like Walsh and Arnsparger have accomplished—when they aren't even smart enough to cover the basics.

In context. Just like a guy 5'9" and 175 would be considered too big to be a jockey.

Bro, I'm not yelling at you at all, hence the smiley's. I'm sorry my man. I thought your post was the 1st one since last year when I made it and thus were the one whom bumped it, but then I saw it was xphinfanx and it's cool if he did, but when I thought you were the first one and then saw you reaction, I just responded to you. Now realizing it wasn't you, your response seems normal. If I had posted that today, than yes, that would be really freakin' weird.:up: My apologies bro.

I'm so psyched and pleased with Solai's development. Let's hope it continues. Really bad position to have question marks. Though only a year ago, those days seem so far away. Thank God.

You know, maybe, just maybe, we finally caught a break as a Franchise, normally when a starter was injured we had chaos, this time Odie's injury just meant Paulie had to play, and Starks had to stay put...and it worked out!

That is sort of luck a good team needs as the Staff simply cannot plan for everything, now if that could just happen at the Qb position and make all of the noise finally...FINALLY..stop about a Qb in Miami.

I don't think so, maybe years ago but in today's game, I don't think that statement is true. There's a ton of 1 gapping nowadays and the two gapping has been used quite a bit in even and odd fronts.

I don't see how it weakens you by going smaller. There's a lot of coaches who are willing to go smaller at that spot.

Yeah, that was part of my original point with Ratliff. Sure, it would be great to have big mountain, who's also quick and nimble, but they're hard to find, so you have to kind of pick your poison. The thing is, teams run such hybrid Ds these days and they rarely run a strict 3-4, so a versatile NT can sometimes be good.

With that said, I'm really happy with Solai and his progressions and so happy that NT is not a big need or concern for us.

You know just enough to be dangerous. By "dangerous" I mean to people who know less than you.

Randy Starks is not the slightest bit undersized for a 1-gap Nose Tackle. There are loads of players in the league in Starks size range who line up with that same positioning and with those sample responsibilities in defenses across the league.

He is arguably undersized as a 2-gap NT, which is what Paul Soliai did end up playing most of the time. That does not mean that Randy Starks would end up primarily playing that, Mike Nolan has been known to utilize both. Given the comparisons to Jay Ratliff being made by the coaching staff, that's likely the case for what was planned with Randy Starks. It's also worth noting that Randy Starks played essentially the same 1-technique position with the Titans.

The one game that Starks did play NT in, the opposing running-backs had 14 carries for 38 yards(2.7 yards a pop). Of opponents rushes that did gain any noteworthy yards at all, only one was listed as being "up the middle" in the official play by play track.

Do you have any analysis of the 11 snaps that Randy Starks played in that game where the Bills ran? Can you tell me if it was primarily 1-gap or 2-gap?

Do you have anything at all, even the slightest argument that on a season-wide level it would be an issue with the evidence you've got?

Is that what the Cowboys are doing by playing Ratliff at NT? Or a few years ago by playing La'Roi Glover at NT?
