That's a big signing if it happens. And Omar will be crowing about Koa Misi morning, noon and night. You don't sign Ray Edwards to sit the bench while Koa Misi continues to pair with Cam Wake.

Vikings writer I'm talking to tells me that Edwards is kind of loudmouth, highly inconsistent effort will disappear for entire games, but very talented and scheme switch to 3-4 could be good for him...FWIW.

I haven't looked at him much.

That makes no sense unless we shifting to 4-3. I dont think Edwards cant play end in a 3-4 set and be nearly as effective and hes almost certainly not a linebacker (unless anyone can give me a reason why he could become one?)

I wonder about the possibility of signing Edwards and having him and Wake man the outside spots while having Misi and Dansby in the middle. That would be a hell of a linebacking core in my opinion.

    Edwards -- Misi -- Dansby -- Wake

    I like it.

I always thought of him as a 4-3 guy. I don't think he has ever been a 3-4 guy and he seems a bit out of place as an OLB candidate. Lord knows we don't need a 3-4 DE.

Has anyone heard anything about a switch to a 4-3? We certainly have enough DL personnel to pull it off successfully and create some interesting packages.

Well...he's 2 inches taller than Cam Wake (Edwards is 6'5", and 18 pounds heavier (268). The last time I really watched the guy play was against the Cowboys and Saints in the 09 playoffs. He was GREAT then. I don't know much about his ability after that save for the fact that he had 8 sacks out of the DE position last year on an underachieving Vikings Defense. This would be our power play to become an elite Defense. Last year he had 9 more tackles and half a sack less than Mario Williams in similar positions (not sure which side of the line both play). Boik, I don't think they'd switch to the 4-3 though. Mario Williams is an inch taller and 30 pounds heavier at 298 and there has been talk that the Texans will play him at OLB this year.

Texans are switching to a 3-4 btw.

he is only 26 years old, this year will be already his 6th year in the league, dont know if he can make a transition to play LB, he is a big dude, i think he will get a big offer from the browns who switch back to 4-3 or the eagles who look for someone to compliment trent cole

    Well away from here
It could be nothing more than trying to get a capable replacement/complement for Wake. If the staff was truly concerned about Wake waering down etc, then bringing in a guy like Edwards would be a good idea. You could alternate series, or even add in situational substitutions for this move. Last year Wake played a hell of a lot of snaps, and if we could take 10-15 away from him per game directly then this would not be such a bad move.

It would always allow for us to have a good pass rusher on the field at all times. And, when we need to show a 4 man line in obvious passing downs we can have Misi, Edwards and Wake on the field at the same time. That would be one hell of a pass rush and it would likely work well.

Otherwise I wonder how this will work to be honest. I know we need an alternate pass rusher for several reasons, but I don't know if trying to sign a guy who is very similar to Wake is the best idea. Some added versatility may be the way to go........as well as someone who isn't a bonafide starter in his own right.

    OR

Could be just a rumor, nothing more, expect to see lots of them moving forward as neither Edwards nor Bush make very much sense for us.

Add in, Edwards has been linked to other teams who would let him play DE in the 4-3 and he makes even less sense signing in Miami.

Greg Ellis, Matt Roth both switched from DE to OLB well into their careers, but even then players who are really established don't like to risk making the move unless their career has bottomed.

Me thinks this smells of deception on the part of some teams...you know the annual "FA we-really-want-this-guy, while secretly-looking-at-some-other-guy" syndrome ??

    or

It could be agent-speak as well....drumming up interest in a guy to bump the price up somewhere ??

I've heard some whispers before that Edwards would be suited to play a SOLB role like that Jarret Johnson guy in Baltimore. I've not done the work myself but I've heard the whispers.

The more absurd portions of my brain wonder if there's a plot to (now, or eventually) pair Ray Edwards with Koa Misi and trade Cam Wake for something cherry. Like a QB.

    Paul Kruger as well.

As tempting as that is, and i've thought about it myself, Edwards still makes little sense as that would require 2 postion switches and Misi just is not a passrusher, it would make more sense to add a Manny Lawson in that scenario and leave Misi as the Sam.

Even then Wake is working so cheaply that deal would be tough to swallow, trade 14 sacks and a 500k salary for a Qb and Lawson and 7 million dollars in salary?

The trade chip, imo, is Randy Starks.

I think people dramatically overrated how difficult the transition is. Pretty much every edge rusher in the league should be able to do it. There are a whole lot more players who have successfully made the transition, and it's improved their career than have had difficulties with it. The only totally "new" aspect a career 4-3 DE is going to have is coverage, and it's not that much, and not that hard. They're not typically in man coverage 20 yards down the field on a tight end. They're typically jamming a guy, dropping into short zones or the flat or in man coverage with #2 tight ends or fullbacks.

I think if you're looking for a Matt Roth style linebacker, you don't even have to be looking at edge rushers. I think if you wanted to, you could have Haloti Ngata be a Matt Roth style linebacker.

I like Edwards a lot. Although he is inconsistent. I think he has the athletic ability to play SOLB. I would be for this signing for sure.

Not to get off the Ray Edwards path, but the Cincinnati Enquirer had a story today that Palmer's out golfing in Vegas or Lake Tahoe, can't remember which (see he's already headed west...) with Matt Cassell, Matt Schaub, and agent David Dunn (who represents all three) today. Word from Joe Reedy, the Bengals beat-writer who is usually pretty solid, was that Palmer was still mum on his status, but there was a quote from Cassell in the article saying that Palmer's future would be discussed. Just an FYI, don't think it's anything more than Reedy putting a story out there today based on the lockout news from yestreday and last night.

I think Palmer's serious as a heart attack about not playing for Cincinnati again. He sold his house and he's already moved out west. I'm sure from his perspective, he's retired until/unless they trade him.

But would he accept playing as far east as Miami? I tend to doubt it.

Would I trade Cameron Wake for a quarterback? Yes. The right one, certainly. Especially if we get Ray Edwards as a free agent. Koa Misi has actually been more of a right side pass rusher for us. Cameron Wake continues to be a left side pass rusher for us. They may prefer to go with the straight on SOLB/WOLB approach with Misi as the WOLB.

Ray Edwards by the way came out of Purdue 6046 and 273 lbs, running a 4.81 and benching 30 reps, 39 inch vertical (impressive) and 9'6" broad jump. That's an explosive big man.

IMO this makes much more sense than setting the market for Reggie Bush. I think we have known all along that another pass rusher would be brought in. And with this regime you would expect that guy to be under 28 or 29 years old and heavy for a LB. Edwards fits that and has shown good production. I still think we're paying the price for taking Pat White instead of the obvious LB in that spot in 2009. I think that was part of the reason we traded down in 2010 and passed on Earl Thomas. I think ET will be a superstar so unless Odrick also becomes a superstar we lost out on that deal (I don't think Misi will ever be more than good/solid player).

Speaking of production, Edwards this year rushed the passer 416 times, had 9 sacks, 7 QB Hits and....53 QB Pressures. Yikes. He also batted two passes, had 27 tackles, all of them "stops".

I remember noticing the QB Pressure production from him. Pretty stunning.

Also, he's taken up boxing during the off season, and just won his first boxing match in a unanimous decision. Think he knocked the guy down a few times.

Dolphins could be of a mind that at 26 years old, just coming into his own like this, a 6'5" and 270 lbs man that runs a 4.80, has a 39 inch vertical, strong as an ox, is just too big a talent to pass up when he's available for free without even trading anything for him. Plus they could wag their fingers at the local media and tell them all that they made the right decision on Matt Roth because now they have someone better.

If the Dolphins want to win anything in 2011, their defense will have to be stellar. Not just good, stellar.

Orton is also on the mkt for a mid level cost in draft picks, maybe a #3 or #2, you can keep Wake, add Orton, and still have room to sign players.

Edwards has been connected to the Falcons for months now.

This would address one of my two biggest fears about a defensive backslide. One was Paul Soliai. The other was a loss of pass rush production once teams start to game plan around Cam Wake more. Of the two, the concern about Soliai is purely about the player's off season work ethic, weight issues, and his ability to stay focused and perform as well this year as he did last year. For Cameron Wake, I know the guy is focused, I know the guy is driven, I know he's working like a dog, but there might not be much he can do about it if teams decide they're going to take him away.

So of the two concerns, the nature of the concerns makes me more tempted to address pass rush than nose tackle. With Soliai you just kind of have to pray a little. With the pass rush, you can make sure that teams pay if they try and take Cam Wake out of the equation.

Paul Soliai is claiming he's in the best shape of his life (don't they always?). We'll see. But if that's true, and they get Ray Edwards, I may have to revise my expectations for this season, QB or no.

There's some validity to the concerns of Ray Edwards' consistency, though.

In 6 games against New Orleans, Detroit (x2), Arizona, and Chicago (x2) he rushed the passer 183 times and had 4 QB Sacks, 4 QB Hits and 41 QB Pressures.

In the other 10 games he rushed the passer 233 times and had 5 QB Sacks, 3 QB Hits and 12 QB Pressures.

Definitely some validity to the thought that he disappears over stretches. But even his 10 games of relative silence he still affected the QB once every 11.7 pass rush opportunities, which isn't terrible. And in the 6 games where he took over, he affected the pass rusher once every 3.7 pass rush opportunities which is like Cameron Wake on nitro. That's even better than the rate at which Wake affected the passer in 2009 when he was just a situational guy.

One thing that Dansby is known for and does well is blitz/pass rush from his position at ILB. With the addition of Aj Edds this season being as good as he is at coverage, hopefully we can play to Dansbys rushing strengths a little more.

Dansby is being paid so much we almost have to find ways to squeeze more production out of him in 2011, too much money sitting in him to not see more impact plays.

That's still a drop in the bucket as far as making up for dropoff in production if teams are successful in taking Cam Wake away.

I don't expect anything out of A.J. Edds. You have to strip away what you hope from what you expect. Here's the reality on Edds. He's a 4th round pick that has never been through a training camp, hasn't played or even practiced organized football with pads on in like a year and a half, and he's now one year removed from ACL surgery that most everyone in the industry agrees takes two years to fully recover from.

Does that sound like the factor that is going to somehow indirectly make up for the potential drop in production of one of the most dangerous pass rushers in the league? Pretend you're a bettor and have no affiliation with anything other than your money.

Trading Wake for Palmer is a terrible idea. Wake is at the beginning of his career, Palmer is at the very end. I still really like the idea of Palmer as our starter, but not at that price. Palmer has to be looked at as a stopgap at best. So in two years, we could have neither Palmer or Wake.

Cameron Wake is 29 years old. Carson Palmer is 31 years old. They'll be 30 and 32 by the time this season's Super Bowl is played. If Wake is at the beginning of his career, so be it, but his career is destined to be short. And yeah, he's got less tread on the tires than Carson Palmer, but Carson Palmer is also a quarterback. They don't age like defensive ends, especially ones like Wake that depend on their freakish explosion.

Yeah I was going to bring this up. Schefter says that either Vince Young, Donovan McNabb or Matt Hasselbeck will be a Dolphin, with his money on Young or McNabb rather than Hasselbeck. I'm with him on the no Hasselbeck in that I think Hasselbeck to the Titans is a foregone conclusion, regardless of Miami's interest in him.

I'm warming up to the Vince Young idea though. He, McNabb, Palmer and Hasselbeck are the only ones with a lick of talent. And for McNabb and Hasselbeck, that talent may be so drowsy that it only wakes up for a game or two here and there. Palmer probably doesn't want to be here and Mike Brown could try and charge a king's ransom for him. He seems destined for Seattle, if anywhere.

Vince Young would PROBABLY be destined for disaster in Miami. His hiring will accentuate the hypocrisy in their thinking about Mallett, speeding this regime toward a blessed end. The locker room will not take to him, I don't think. They're all such hard workers and that's what they respect, and Young is a reputed lazy work ethic guy. Meanwhile Chad Henne is out there impressing everyone with his work ethic and running these practices, etc. The pressure from inside the locker room will be to start Henne. But you don't buy a Vince Young not to see him play, IMO. And if he comes in place of Henne, I don't imagine him just kind of bumping around with a loss here, a win there, speeding toward an eventual 8-8 which would be a veritable disaster for this team IMO. I imagine either he sets the Dolphins on like some ridiculous 9-1 win streak, or he continues the madness and the whole season gets scuttled to the depths of Andrew Luck-land.

    How so?

Just because he didn't play in the NFL, doesn't mean he didn't play. He played two seasons of professional football in Canada. How much time has he really sat out in his career before he started playing ball in Canada? Maybe a year or two?

He's a four year professional at a position that ages much worse than quarterback.

Same deal with him as with Williams, who at 34 still has skills at arguably a much more punishing position.

And as was pointed out JT won his DPOY well after 30, so did James Harrison.

I suspect Hasselback stays in Seattle.

We'll see, I suspect Palmer doesn't move and Brown catches little heat for the football stupidity in not moving him, TBH I think Palmer should have the tommy john surgery if he is not going to play.

Greg Cosell did a study on Young and pretty much came to the same conclusion "we" did watching his 2010 season, has improved, needs a running game to play off of, if this deal is done soon he likely will be cut 8/8.

Disagree, players want as much money as they can manage to get, they also want to win, most of the guys on the roster recall Young beating us in 09, as for Mallet..we shall never agree on that one.

The NFL judged him worthy of a 3rd rd pick and a backup slot in New England, but he was capable of being our Day 1 Starter?

Can you name the last 3rd rd pick Qb who started on opening day of his rookie season?
