Garner's had only the one injury in his entire career, right? College and NFL combined? Murtha has been the one who is more injury prone. Garner is by far the better player and the more durable one. Murtha is the better athlete who may yet still develop some technique to go with the AA.

I don't believe its only been one injury. I seem to recall a few leg and foot injuries but he's played through some. I am not really high on Lydon Murtha.

In college, Garner missed no games due to injury. As a rookie, he was inactive all 16 games. No way for us to know if he was injured during part of that season, but I do not recall him being on an injury report. In 2009. he played all 16 games, 8 as a reserve and 8 as a starter. Did he play hurt during any of that time? Seems any evidence to support such a claim has been anecdotal at best. Either way, his performance was good enough he was considered to have the inside track as a 2010 starter before his foot injury, that caused him to miss the season. Does one injury in 7 seasons, college and pro combined, serve to label a man as injury prone?

Yes that was Nate Garner. We also used to have Andrew Gardner as a reserve OL. We drafted him in the 6th round, 2009 draft. I think he only lasted his rookie season.

I think you're dramatically overrating the number of plays that Carey's relative lack of athleticism could be problematic on. You're basically looking at outside zone runs that Carey is "uncovered" on, which is really where he's going to be asked of more than what he does now.

I don't expect Carey to get an outstanding jump off the snap and be able to consistently cut off 230 pound linebackers who are positioned at a closer technique to the aiming point of a play than he is. If we were running 20+ outside zone plays a game like the Shanahan era Broncos, sure that would be a concern. But then again, it's mitigated by all the circumstances where he may be on the backside of a play and that type of block is not mission critical, or where the linebacker he is supposed to hit is lined up further from the action than he is, etc.

I think it's really difficult to suggest that Carey does not live up to the athletic legacy of guys like John St.Clair in Cleveland or Damien Woody in Jersey who have played in similar run schemes.
