Hmm, Kolb to Az seems a done deal, and trades begin when the Facilities open so the day after a NFLPA vote. Anyone see any moves that we'd make quickly?
Unfortunately I don't think the players are approving a deal today. It could be a while yet. But I wouldn't be surprised if immediate confirmation springs up that the Dolphins and Bengals are in discussions about Carson Palmer.
You think Brown is going to budge on Palmer? He seems adamant about forcing Palmer to retire, as stupid as that is.
Mike Brown has never been very smart, so he might actually do it. However, I will say that Carson Palmer is not a Carl Pickens, Corey Dillon or Chad OchoCinco. Carson Palmer is 31 years old, has $70-80 million in net worth, has sold his home, and hasn't been in Cincinnati all off season. If that doesn't SCREAM to Mike Brown that "I'm retired unless you trade me", then Mike Brown is even dumber than I thought. Those other guys, I don't know if retirement was ever a serious threat. Their bark was louder than their bite. Mike Brown had to make a good front at being tough up until now to see how serious Carson is about this threat. Now that he sees he's serious as a heart attack, it's time to move on IMO. Mike Brown has to approach things this way. Carson Palmer is gone. He's sold his house, and he's gone. His wife and kids might even leave him if he tries to stay in Cincinnati and keep playing. That makes it all even more credible that he's truly retired as far as Cincinnati is concerned. I can either get something for him, or I can get nothing for him. That's the situation. A SMART man, a man that cares about winning, would relent and trade Palmer somewhere outside of the division.
While I agree with your whole premise, the fact remains that his wife is a Cali girl, and moved somewhere in SoCal (forgot where) to be with her family. For us to be considered, she would have to be willing to live East Coast. Heck, anything is better than CIN, but we're talking South Beach....how can she say no? But yes, given the writing on the wall, Brown would be foolish to not get some kind of compensation from Palmer. It is a business, the players understand it, maybe this exec should too.
The last legitimate reason for Brown to hold out on trading Palmer would just be price. From his perspective, if you want Carson Palmer right now when he'd have all training camp to absorb your system and get chemistry with your players, rather than getting him midway through the season just before the trade deadline...you're going to have to pay more. And he can always trade Palmer in the future as well, like 2012.
A deal I'd like is a later rd pick, say a 5th, for Slaton and Dressen from the Texans, to me it plugs in two needs and upgrades athleticism in needed roles.
But if Seattle loses out to Arizona on the Kolb trade, than why wouldn't Palmer to Seattle be the most logical trade there is? Seattle would overpay as well. If anything, Palmer to Seattle and Hasselbeck shaking loose to Miami or Tennessee makes the most sense.
It is pretty clear that Palmer doesn't need or want money (as bad as others) and will decide to either retire or play for a team that he wants to play for.
