http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports_football_dolphins/ Fmr OSUer iirc as well, solid signing he is good but not great at several jobs and upgrades the ST unit as well.
Cam who? Good player that fills that OLB/ILB/ST role that I've thought we have needed someone to do, especially with Q and Ike unable to play ST very well.
Depth behind Misi/Wake. Looks like they are trying to fix the depth behind these 2 considering the UDFA pick ups of Quinton Spears and Jonathan Freeney. Pretty much what I said I thought they would do a few days ago when folks were talking about Edwards. Especially considering the team only has about $11 million to spend on all spots after the rookies sign.
He has his own web page: http://www.jasontrusnik.com/ Also Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=36002594 Maybe you can friend him on FB, Pads. You guys can be buddies, pals, amigos.
Really solid ST player as well, I can recall Jets fans pointing that out prior to his trade to the Brownies. I like this pickup as we flat out needed the depth.
So? We don't need decent depth? He does have 15 starts over the past 2 seasons, so he is no stranger to being a starter if need be.
I've got nothing against depth. I simply indicated that Trusnik, starts or no starts, isn't a particularly good player. Wouldn't surprise me if he didn't make the roster, wouldn't if he did.
He'll make the roster Vendi, at worst he is Ike Francis's replacement, at best he moves into Q Moses old role, and provide ST performance as a bonus as neither Q nor Ike can play a ST well at all. A healthy Dobbins and Trusnik are two instant upgrades for Specials.
Yeah, it sounds to me like its mostly a special teams signing and/or depth. We still need the help in the ST area as far as I'm concerned. So if he helps out there, I'm all for it.
I agree, we're in danger of losing the offseason if we don't have a notable FA signed within 24 hours of opening. So much of the traditional success in this area is dictated by immediate, big money moves, it's alarming that the front office hasn't jumped on this.
I don't really have particularly strong feelings on the pick-up one way or the other. He's basically Charlie Anderson 2.0, which in itself is fine, but we don't really know where he fits on the depth chart. I hope he's not the #3 OLB, but as was mentioned they've got to replace Quentin Moses and (hopefully) Ikaika Alama-Francis, and he seems like a reasonable option for that.
You mean we're going to fill our special teams with solid guys rather than just practice squad scrubs? What is this new wizardry?!?!?!?
Great plan unfolding this off season. Jason Trusnik and Brokedown Barber, the new faces of the franchise.
Trusnik is a damn good special teams player and this is a good pickup for that unit. I don't want him on the field for extended snaps, but in a spot role he is a at least competent, and as a special teamer he is a welcomed addition.
That might be a bit harsh, considering he is likely a special teamer, and we can certainly use help there.
Nothing has changed regarding punts. Our punt coverage team absolutely killed us as much as anything last year. If Barber is such a good blocker, heck I'd sign him just to be the up back on the punt team. We got abused by bad blocking for Fields last season.
Why bother with that? Forum members need their exercise and it's more fun to jump to conclusions and have knee jerk reactions. Free Agency is now over. Our substantial haul consisted of Trusnick and Barber. We are not allowed to sign anyone else.
Was going to make this same point. It remains to be seen how diminished special teams value will be. I'm going to continue to operate under the crazy assumption that it's a good thing to not have one of the worst units in the league.
Can Jeff Ireland be somehow directed to www.thephins.com , so he will know the proper course of action to take in free agency? The poor dumb bastard obviously is clueless and needs our guidance.
The two changes, as you probably know, is kickoffs being from the kick team's 35 rather than 30. Also the coverage team is no longer allowed more than a 5 yd running start at the moment of kickoff. On kicks that are returnable, the cover men are going to be a little slower getting downfield or so it seems to me. This could have an impact as well. While there will be less returns, perhaps the yards per return will be greater. Then again, only having a 5 yd running start will be negated a little by having 5 less yards to run.

I totally agree with you if the jets kepp making the right moves and the dolphins keep making cheapscape moves then we could be in the basement of the east ,because even Buffalo is capable of beating us when in reality we should not be losing to them.
Mangini who has consulted the Dolphins this offseason? I find that an interesting tid bit knowing he was the Jets head coach not long ago.
