Ah... some padding!!! It wasnt full pads, but I'll take shoulder pads with real contact! I mainly watched the skill guys yesterday, so I really wanted to watch the trenches today. Pouncey in particular...

    Heres what I got...

    QBs
I honestly didnt watch the passing itself a ton to be honest (focused more on trenches), but I did see some of it. Henne had some nice passes today. Had a nice deep fly route to Marshall during drills. He also had a perfect pass to Fasano over the middle, dropping it just over Austin Spitler for about a 20-25 yard gain. Had a fantastic pass to Hartline on a 15 yard dig with real zip, but Hartline dropped it. Epps also dropped a nice pass from Henne over the middle. Another positive is that for a second staight day, Henne is scrambling around a little more trying to buy himself more time. He even took off running on a play when nothing was open. Weird stuff, lol. Drawbacks were that he had a fumbled exchange from Joe Berger, and he did have a couple more check downs than I'd prefer. Although, they all seemed to be going to the rook Daniel Thomas, so maybe that was by design? Dont know...

Devlin seemed to play well too. I didnt see a ton of him but he did have a few really nice throws. He threaded a pass through the smallest window to Julius Pruitt... to the point where the 2 defenders that were closing in on the pass from either side collided just after the ball squeezed through. He also haad a couple nice throws to Marlon Moore, one down the left sideline on a fly and another slant/short post over the middle (that Moore almost dropped). Didnt see much of Brandstater except for a fumbled snap.

    WRs/TEs/RBs
Like I said, I didnt watch a lot of the WRs/DBs in generall today, but Marshall looked good from what I saw. Caught all the passes thrown to him that I saw. Had a couple nice fly routes down the sideline and worked the underneath/middle too. Hartline looked healthier today. He had nice catch on a 20-25 yard corner route along the sideline. Also had a nice catch over the middle... however he did have that one drop that I mentioned I saw on the Henne bullet. Gates was a little quicker getting in and out of his routes today... but I did see him round off a dig route. He also dropped a pass pass during drills, but seemed to be solid the rest of practice.

Marlon Moore. This guy has got to get his **** together. He had another 2 drops today, and a couple more bobbles. If this keeps this up... he aint making the team. Not with what I'm seeing out of Carter. Same speed, but bigger and he catches the ball so cleanly. I cant recall him ever body catching, always picking the ball cleanly out of the air with no bobbling. Also wanted to pay attention to him a little during special teams drills, b/c hes going to have to play well on STs to make this team. Only saw 1 play with him at gunner, but he beat the 2 opposing players to the outside and got behind them. Ad the ST's coach yelling at the other 2 for getting beat. Also, I'll just throw Clay in here. He is quick and smooth athletically. He runs a nice route too and catches the ball very well. When blocking, he got matche dup on Quintin Spears and intially had a good hit on him, but Spears shed him pretty well. He does seem to understand leverage, but needs a little more bulk.

Daniel Thomas still is looking quick out there. Decisive in his cuts/holes and seems to run behind his pads in the limited contact. Was finishing his runs hard and long Ricky Williams style.

Now... to the big boys! This is where I focused most of the time. Missed a lot of the passing drills but it was worth it!

I'll start with Pouncey. I wanted to watch the Pouncey/Soliai match up more than anything else, so I appolize if thats where most of my focuse was when watching the trenches. They put Pouncey into the starting line up on the first set of drills of his first practice. Love that. I saw one reporter say that Pouncey's first play he got abused by Soliai? Not the first play I saw. Either I missed the first one or he did, but I dont think I did. Pouncey's first play (that I saw) may have been his best block of the day. Completely stoned Soliai in a 2v2, maybe giving up a foot. Had great leverage and had perfect position. Now, the next play I saw, Soliai took it to him. He got a really quick first step, got into Pouncey's right shoulder (may have had a rim move in there?), got Pouncey high and drove Pouncey back on skates. These 2 really had some good battles though today, and for Pouncey's first day of practice, I was pretty impressed. He plays with good leverage and seems to have a good anchor, and keeps good position with his feet to keep the DL in front of him for the most part. One thing is that he seems to really keep his head on a swival well when left in space to block... as he did a very nice job picking up twists/stunts from the DL and blitzes from DBs/LBs. Odrick was lined up more outide and looped around on a stunt. Pouncey recognized it and picked up Odrick perfectly. He also tossed Johnny Jones to the ground during one drill, when Jones tried to go around him to Pouncey's left on a swim. Also, for those worried about his shotgun snapping, it seemed fine to me. While I was mainly watching his blocks and how he comes out of his stance instead of the actual ball, I didnt notice any poor snaps. However, as for the bad, Starks absolutely abused Pouncey on one play. Couldnt help laughing, almost a "welcome to the NFL" play. Starks put a nasty swim move on Pouncey and left Mike not only grasping for air, but he ended up face planting as Starks blew by him. He got it handed to him couple times during practice... but overall had a pretty good first day IMO. Was huffing and puffing a little though, so hes going to need to get back used to that heat.

John Jerry was rotating in and out of the starting line up. He played pretty well, but didnt really wow me either. Got schooled by Odrick one play on a spin. Carey seemed pretty solid, throwing Quintin Spears about 4 yards one play. Incongnito had some good powerful run blocks clearing some lanes for Daniel Thomas. I dont know what number Garner is, he isnt in the program. Matt Kopa and Ray Feinga were unimpressive, along with DJ Jones. Allen Barbre stood out a couple times though during the 1v1s and 2v2s. Joe Berger was "meh"... dont really see him challenging Pouncey. He got abused by Soliai today.

Jake Long. OK... I know we joke around with the "Myth and Legend of Jake Long"... but this was serious. They had Jake doing rehab with a medicine ball on a rope. They had him put his back to the wall, and swing it side to side slamming into the wall on either side of him. Well... this was LOUD. Pretty much got the attention of the whole stands. After his first set, they went over and looked at the wall and seemed to be inspecting it. We joked that maybe he cracked it. Well... during his second set... the portion being slammed to his right literally crumbled on one of the slams.. to the point that a big chunk of cement crumbled out of the wall. He literally burst a portion of a cement wall by slamming it with a medicine ball. The legend continues...

    Defense:

As I mentioned, I mainly watched the trenches today. We'll start off with Soliai, since thats who everyone wants to hear about most. The guy looks like hes in great shape. Hes huge, but not a big gut, more solidly built. Has a great first step and was very disruptive even if he wasnt breaking up a play. Took it to Pouncey a few times... and anyone not named Pouncey got destroyed (looking at you Berger).

Odrick - Wanted to watch him today. He looks very quick, although a little light. He looks smaller thank Alma-Francis when next to each other (were teamed up together on a 2v2). But like I said, hes very quick. Absolutely destroyed Ray Feinga on an outside move. And he abused Jerry pretty nasty on a spin move. Pass rushing... the guy looks great. I didnt get a chance to see him against the run much though, but I'd like to watch that next time... b/c while being light like he seems really helps with the pass rushing, I'm curious how much anchor hes got in that body. Really athletic though. Good feet, active hands, and quick.

Starks looks good. Hes got a little more wobble to him than I'd like when jogging, and doesnt look in peak condition, but hes still playing well out there. This heat will wear the little extra hes got on him pretty quickly.

Quintin Spears - Padre, I watched him for you. He had an up and down practice IMO. Positives... hes really quick. Runs around wildly out there and is very fluid, and very quick. On 2v2's, he lined up opposite a TE, with a DL and OT on the inside of both of them. When the ball snapped, the TE blocked down on the DL and the OT pulled around. Spears didnt recognize it though and followed the TE down, crashing into his own DL, and then by the time he realized what was happening the OT had already pulled around and completely sealed him inside, losing containment. Poor play. However, his next play he got fantastic leverage and got up and underneath 84 Brett Brackett. As I mentioned up above, he let Clay get some good leverage on him, but shed Clay really well with some real good use of his hands. In 11v11's, he rushed against Carey, and tried to go with an outside speed rush. However, Carey threw him out of the way like a little kid, lol. However a following play, he pressured the QB untouched, and kept his hands up which was good. The QB was trying to dump it over him, but b/c Spears had his hands up, it made the pass much harder and forced the incompletion. He had nice plays, and ones that need improvement. But he does flash potential and is athletic and good hustle. He'll need to bulk up a little more IMO. He seems to understand how to use leverage but could use some more strength.

Sapp - Got roasted a few times again.

Jimmy Wilson had another nice INT. Thats 2 days in a row. Havent really watched him yet, but I might have to start paying attention to him, especially since it appears Sapp's roster spot looks shaky IMO.

Cameron Wake is such a freak. Rocking the football pants today... just b/c he wants to look like a specimin. He played well, and absolutely destroyed Poor DJ Jones on one play. Jones had no shot... no contest.

Thats about it! Sorry for the wait! This weekend is touchy, lol...

He crashed down on the drill and gave up his outside shoulder...welcome to the NFL Rook from Prairie View A&M..

Thanks Nasty, that is exactly what I had hoped/thought I'd hear about him, good first step quickness and can use leverage needs to bulk up and needs coaching up a bit who also has really nice closing speed.

My vision for him is a pure speed rusher/special teamer this season, a bit like our version of Antwan Barnes, if one watches his highlight reel from College (I know, it is a highlight reel, not a bad play reel) one sees this lanky DE who sort of makes a sickle out of his hand and rips the ball out like a certain #99 used to do for us..something I've rarely ever seen, let alone seen it work.

He to was skinny and quick and made a ton of mistakes pinning his ears back and heading up field when he was a young porpoise.

I've been to a couple of Broncos camps and I've seen fans wearing other teams gear. I've even seen Raiders stuff there. I usually wear a Dolphins T and hat. Nobody ever starts talking smack.
When your at the Dolphins camps, do you ever see people wearing other teams stuff?

That deserves a Thor Sig Pic VO...

I cannot wait for the precocious Mr Spears to meet Thor for a couple of reps...he is going to get accordianed like a looney toons character...but I want to see if he stays with the play as guys with physical talent are a dime o dozen, guys with tenacity and hustle are much harder to find.

That was pure heaven, thanks Nasty..Lots a good news in there..

By the way, I saw this video that some dude snuck into practice, and it was obvious that they were practicing the checkdowns on some plays..

I liked hearing that Carey was moving around well..

I just love the idea of Pouncey going toe to toe with the 2nd best nose tackle in the game, all the time, thats so good for him and us, I mean Solai is a nose that completely destroyed Mikes brother, and made Nick mangold, the supposed best center in the game, his lil ***** puppet.

Keep an eye on my boi Deej, you know I watch passrushers like a hawk, hopefully Wake takes him under his wing a bit and teaches him how to shed a blocker from the inside out as Jones learned, a swim move can get you put on you backside..#99 had that sort of Stiff Arm and shed, do not think he is strong enough to do that quite yet..but that wing span, if he is in the zip code he can get the sack..

i compared Soliai to Sapp coming into last year ... and i still stand by that.

great to hear that Carey appears healthy and is moving around ... have to worry every year about that dude's knees. not that excited about Vernon throwing Spears -- um, he does have experience and 100+ lbs on the kid.

Pads, Spears does remind of a young JT .... but 220 is way too light ... be interesting if'n he can get up towards 240 and keep his speed.

Most happy about Pouncey ... i still worry about his ability to make the line calls though .... drills are physical

Great news on Odrick as well ... a great year from him will help folks forget about last year.

Sapp is very likely done in MIA this year .... he sucked early last year as well -- and to his credit, actually made some plays towards the end of the season -- but we have improved talent, so doubt he hangs on

    Nasty -- U DA MAN!

The beat guys do not "think" fan, they more or less could be covering a chili cook off, they have no passion for the material and probably more empathy for the players then the average fan does.

We can form an opinion on Channing C being waived, and by the next day it is over, for the beat guys they were closer to him after talking with him for 5 yrs all over the miami area.

I've heard several versions of how much he weighs, for example SI has him listed at 217, NFL Draft Scout has him listed at 236

    http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=89063&draftyear=2011&genpos=DE

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/draft-2011/players/77745.html

    NFLDS has him listed at a 4.69 40, Si as a 4.72 40

SI has him at 4.72 at 217, which really is a bit to slow, NFLDS as a 4.69 at 236, which is really good.

Hopefully Irish found a gem in the confusion:

CBSSports has him at 236 as well.

For his play, he is fun to watch:

Literally he provides amazing backside pressure as FN alluded to, he runs around and earned to "quicks" on FN's impressiveness scale of adjectives...:wink2:

Odie has been compared to Hong Kong Fuey, to me he is Taz..

I like his fury, and instincts, Nasty described him on point, ''Wildly''..His body needs a lot of work for this level Pod but he does have the proper symmetry to add good weight..

He also has a great motor, you are correct..kid probably didn't get any sniffs from major colleges cause he was probably a 185lb pass rusher in high school..lol

Started out as a Safety, then became the go to Wr, then injured a MCL and was not recruited his coach hooked him up with just a walk on chance at Prairie View A&M.

Watching that highlight film, saw another thing I've not seen, he went for the rb on the fake pitch on the option and tackled him, got up, and caught the Option Qb about 10 yds downfield as he tried to cut back inside.

Fun stuff, his lats and back needs work wonder who "banged the table" to get him?

Sheridan I'd bet, he is the #1 guy the CFL scouts liked fromt he HBCU's this yr.

check out this article, its why I trust Nasty's eyes and none of our so called local reporters..

Miami’s first-round pick of April’s NFL Draft jumped right into the fray taking snaps with the first team offensive line. Considering the fact that he had no offseason mini-camps to digest the new playbook, Pouncey held his own.

“It was a good thing that he’s played in the Florida heat because he took a lot of snaps out there today, which is good,” said Head Coach Tony Sparano, is still trying to adjust to the hectic pace of this post-lockout camp. “There are so many natural things that he did today in practice that made him stand out, specifically some things that he did in the run game, some things that he did in protections drills during 1-on-1s.”

There were a few hiccups as should be expected for a player’s first day on the field involving footwork and timing, but when it came down to the basic blocking skills and strength situations, Pouncey did well. On two occasions during the 1-on-1s against veteran nose tackle Paul Soliai he stood him up.

Soliai has gone against some of the toughest centers in the league, including Pouncey’s twin brother, Maurkice, last season when the Dolphins played the Pittsburgh Steelers. At 6-foot-5 and 303 pounds, Pouncey is physically imposing and left an impression on Soliai.

“He was pretty good. We both talked today about just giving each other a good luck and just coming out hard,” said Soliai, who was rewarded with the franchise tag after a strong finish to 2010. “There are a lot of days left so we’ll just see how he progresses.”

Even though they don’t line up directly over him in practice, defensive ends Kendall Langford and Jared Odrick liked what they saw out of the rookie on his first day. Odrick plans to test Pouncey quite a bit early on before switching roles and helping him prepare for opponents.

One important trait Pouncey exhibited in practice that Sparano was pleased to see and noticed on game film from Florida was his football smarts. It’s something he hopes to continue to see as camp goes along.

“His awareness in there was good. There was a lot of stuff happening in there with games and we had third-down pressures coming at us and he really didn’t know any of this,” Sparano said. “This guy came into the meeting room here this morning and did a super job I thought of handling that. So that’s just good football awareness of a smart player. You could see the athlete but the way he reacted to some of those things that were happening today was good.”

What did you mean by the bolded part tho? I haven't read much of what the local reporters have said from today, just a little on my phone. Are they saying he played poorly?

not really, a couple of things about being schooled by solai, and I guess he had one bad snap, it was more of a general statement, the reporters completely have sh%$ on henne today though, and its obvious they want blood, and they don't want to look bad from their predictions.

Between FN's reports and the Sun Sentinel's reports I feel like I'm watching the battle between Fox News and MSNBC.

lol! What have we differed on? If it's passing game stuff, I admittingly didnt watch a big chunk of it and instead watched the OL/DL drills. So I may have missed stuff in that area.

I don't like to think that I am on one extreme or the other. I try to be as objective as possible in my evaluations.

Jonathon Freeney also looks like a good prospect FN, #49, we have two pretty good olb prospects via the UDFA process.

Interestingly enough, the packers called Spears' agent that morning, Ireland called that evening.

FN, thanks for the great writeup. Hard to live in a country that's so close but might as well be on the moon.

How big does Carey look btw? He look any bigger or smaller? And does his size look like Subway or Quizno's?
