Later in the process, who is on the market at backup ILB or SOLB? One name to keep in mind is Scott McKillop or Tully Cain.
Weren't we rumored to have been linked to Osi Umenyiora at some point during the lockout? I saw his agent basically rejected the deal the Giants offered and it appears he will now only try to seek a trade. Not that I want/don't want him, but I think that's one option they might consider.
I think we will know how serious the situation is by whom they bring in, Cain makes sense as he knows Nolan's system, McKellop was in SF with ST Ast Fipp and he could step in for Spitler's role if needed.
Wouldn't be surprised to see either brought in. Thought I read somewhere that Tully Banta-Cain has/had a serious injury and was going to need major surgery, and that was one of if not the main proponent of the Pats releasing him. I could be wrong, so don't quote me on that one.
Had abdominal surgery maybe 3 weeks ago and was expected to miss 4 to 6 weeks, the pats cut him. Which is one of the reasons why he is on my radar, then, there is the OLB..Scrap Heap thread... Heck, if Odom got himself straightened out he would make some sense.
I'd rather have McKillop than Spitler. The guy was a tackling machine in college with a great nose for the ball. We still have the cap room for a quality acquisition. LMAO..... originally I typed crap room before I caught the typo. Dale's Pale Ale is stronger than I realized.... can't drink these at the same pace of a regular beer.
Dammit. We take one step forward getting Edds back healthy and productive, and lose another. Hope it's not Misi, and hope it's not serious.
Stylez G. White is also a free agent. He's not got great practice habits and is 32, but he's effective, probably more so than Taylor and Misi as pass rushers to begin with. He probably wouldn't be an effective strongside guy at this point, but Taylor is better off handling SOLB anyway with his skillset.
It's OK. Jason Taylor flew down from New York on an extended vacation. We're saved! Spitler being injured isn't too big a deal, as he's got a tough road to make the squad anyway. Misi is definitely a big deal, especially with the SOLB market very thin now.
I've lost track of who is on the market tbh, after Roth signed in Jax, I just sort of closed the book. David Bowens is floating around as well.
/looks for "you suck" button Seriously, I'd have Banta-Cain in if I were these guys. Which means that they won't, of course.
I'd be really amused if we ended up with David Bowens and Jason Taylor in the roster. Could do worse than Bowens, but I think he's more of an ILB at this point.
I wonder what it would honestly take to get Osi. Is he worth a 2nd? Osi & Wake in nickel packages against Brady don't seem like a terrible idea. We have the cap room....... our owner is a billionaire...... sign him up. lol.
I have been thinking all along that Channing Crowder will be called up sooner or later. As the song says he just wants to be wanted
Ugh. More ugh. The hidden blessing to that is that Edds would then be moved to SOLB, where I've always thought he was a natural fit.
Banta-Cain is expected to start teh season on the PUP list I thought. I know I read that a week or two ago. Possible I missed something recently... As for Osi, he reported out of good faith and the NYG revoked his agents right to seek a trade when no one met the NYG first round asking price. Would I pay a 1st for Osi? No way. A second? Maybe, depending how close a team was. If I felt Osi put us over the top definitely. The thing about Osi is hes never been a LB at any level and is a mediocre at best run defender. To be clear he can play the run when he engages and takes on blockers but he doesnt do it very often. At one point Strahan said this years ago and its been said since then as well. I love him as a pass rusher, he is the master of the strip-sack and no one would be happier to see him leave then Eagles QB' who he has tortured for years as their OL has never really handled him well at all. I think if I felt more confident in us making a deep run in the playoffs I would say go get Osi but with next years draft rich with QB prospects...screw it, keep the picks and if Henne fails go get a QB and trade a 2013 pick for Osi. The Giants DL is deep anyway, another year with JPP-Tuck-Austin-Linval Joseph and they wont care as much.
If the Giants can spend a 1st on JPP, then we can spend a 2nd on Osi if we feel we have a chance to compete.
NYG are in a unique situation. They actually needed a DE. They realized Tuck's best position is as an under DT where hes a matchup nightmare for guards. Think about it...Tuck is a top 5 DE which is his second best position and probably a top 3 DT and maybe the best pass rushing DT. Now you get three guys like Tuck, Osi, JPP going upfield..very difficult matchup for OL's. JPP was a terror tonight by the way, 7 tackles 2 sacks and made Jordan look Gross. Giant pass rush is going to be very very good. Plus as a 4-3 team they actually really need Osi at this point which is why they pulled him off the market.
Good point. and JPP looks biggg out there. All of what you said is more reason why we need another top pass rusher IMO. In our nickel package, when we should be looking for the most QB pressure, we have Misi & JT rotating at DE. That's not good enough IMO, at least not in a passing league. Plus, I'd hate to have a dominant defense that becomes average if Wake is ever injured.
This is why I wanted Aldon Smith not Mike Pouncey. Not terribly upset with Pouncey at this point but another top end pass rusher would have been the best way to put this D at an elite level. Whats done is done though. With this regime they have shown they can find pass rushers. The one thing about Wake is that when he lines up on the right side against LT's instead of RT's he isnt the same player. With an Osi or some other proven pass rusher it would be a nightmare situation for offensive lines.
I would've taken Smith for the same reasons you mentioned. I agree, we're at the point where it makes more sense to help the defense become dominant instead of trying to balance out defense & offense. I'm not saying ignore offense, but I do think defense should get a little more of the emphasis if we want to separate ourselves from the rest of the league. How about Starks for Osi straight up? lol. Now that they drafted Austin, that deal's probably a no go.
They needed a true over DT which Autsin is..pre draft they may have taken Starks though I doubt it...
Do you think we have good trade bait in Starks right now or would you prefer to keep him to keep great depth at Dline? Tough call for me.
We never came close to having a chance at Smith. 7th overall. I'd have not minded if we had taken Kerrigan though.
Well, heresy for me, but keep in mind most pressure no longer comes from the Base Nickel 4 Dlinemen pressuring the Qb, now it is more blitzes and mixing coverages.
A lot of 4 man rush from Nolan in the pre-season game for sure. Mixed up 4-3 and 3-4 but mostly played 4-3 rush concepts.
Well, I agree with the suggestions of David Bowens. Another name we may want to keep in mind is Stephen Cooper, if we want a ILB. He was rumored to be signing with us right before Burnett's name broke as his being the guy. I think it was Ron Rivera who said Cooper is the smartest player he ever coached and was like a coach on the field. I like cerebral ILBs.
Can never have enough d line depth. Unless someone offers a third or better you keep him unless it's a player for player swap. I didn't and still don't like Kerrigan. Reminded me too much of a lesser Matt Roth. Never really stood out to me. Smith was the guy I wanted the whole way even though we never got the chance to take him. Also, Cooper resigned with the chargers today.
I normally agree with Clean's assessment, but I was thinking the EXACT same thing yesterday about Kerrigan for absolutely no known reason what so ever. I think he'll be a starter, but not a starter you want for a #16 overall pick.
