"After initially threatening to write a tell-all book in August of 2010, Shapiro shelved the project and began cooperating with a Yahoo! Sports investigation in December." I wonder how much Yahoo! Sports paid him to do that.
A lot. They were conned by a convicted con artist. Idiots. I'm going to continue to stick to my guns on this. 10% truth, 90% lies. We all seen how damning that SI article on OSU was. How much of that actually turned out to be true? Yahoo is far less credible than Si could even dream of being. There's no doubt money exchanged hands. I'd also say there's no doubt Clint Hurtt was involved. That guy has always striked me as shady. However, it's not about what you can allege, but about what you can prove, and so far, there's no proof aside from Tyrone Moss flapping his gums. Pictures of players and coaches on his yacht or in a nightclub is proof of nothing. Hanging out with a booster is not a violation. Let me know when pictures of money exchanging hands surface. Receipts and bank statements. I can use my bank statement and claim that this 1TB external HDD I bought for my computer earlier this month was a gift for some random FSU commit. It's not like this is some recent development. Miami brought this forth to the NCAA and they both have been investigating for a year now. There will be vacated games. There will be loss of scholarships. If any proof comes forth with recent players, there will be suspensions. However, I don't think it will end that bad for us. I'm actually more concerned with the basketball program.
We both know there's about 0% chance of this happening. The death penalty will never be used on a Division 1 Football Program again.
Wouldn't say 0 but it likely won't happen. Slim chances. Still, gotta worry about it. They really ****ed up.
Not sure how they ****ed up without any proof of any wrongdoing. They're going to need a hell of a lot more than 1 sad sack of **** player flapping his gums.
Please, they won't get the death penalty. But when it seemed as if they were taking 2 steps forward, they take a mile long step backward. Definitely not what Golden needs, and I really feel for him. Btw, Tyrone Moss deserves a beating.
Al Golden will be fine. If you can coach, you can coach. A loss of a few scholarships won't hurt that. This could hurt our recruiting this year though. Most of the guys we have currently committed aren't going anywhere, especially the key guys like Duke and Keith Brown. What I'm worried about is the impact it will have on guys who just aren't sure what they want. Guys like Howard, Diggs, Bush, Young.
Who is they? The only people currently with the school that did anything wrong are some players. Randy Shannon didn't want Shapiro around, but couldn't stop him. Nobody did anything that could have been avoided.
Whats so ****ing sad about all this, is that these damning allegations just show how much in the ****ter the program has been in. What did Shapiro actually give anyone? A $15k necklace to Sean Taylor??? A $5K loan (which was repaid) to Hurtt??? Some free dinners at 112??? Some ****ing spending money??? And we are only talking about one booster. All we had was one legitimate booster, and the guy wasn't even alumni. Of course he'll throw the program under the bus to get a book deal. This is an absolute joke. SEC schools have boosters making legitimate cash outlays to players, while Miami is nickel and diming guys
The guy who wrote the article was on LeBetard's show today saying that any facts that were written in the story were corroborated by sources other than the Ponzie schemer, whether they be player admissions, financial records, or phone records. Over 70 players, and 6 coaches being involved is such a massive amount of wrong doing that even if only 30% is true, Miami is royally screwed. Not sure about death penalty, but it will probably make what was done to USC seem lenient.
Generally sums up my view as well. The NCAA's cartel system is utterly broken, but they'll go ahead and levy serious punishment on Miami for stuff that happened years ago. They can't exactly go to Antrel Rolle and say "give it back", for example. Complete and utter joke.
Yahoo did not pay Shapiro a dime for the story. So there goes that conspiracy theory. and now the Herald is digging...and finding cute little nuggets that will deliver the final blow. That Northwestern recruiting class? bought and paid for. Every good player on the current team? Paid for. For the mere look of things, the U will be forced to do things it would have never done. It is not about the "whole truth". It is about the intrigue. It is about the "story". The sleazier, the better. This is now about politics.
How many times does this have to happen before we stop blaming the schools and point the finger at the real culprit? The NCAA is an antiquated, corrupt, system of what is essentially indentured servitude. Even if you believe in the "amateurism" rules, it is clear that they are impossible to be fully in complaince with and even tougher to enforce. Even in the Yahoo story, Shapiro started out as a "living scholar" which is sanctioned by the NCAA. He was originally assigend Willis McGahee and he could have Willis at his house and let him sleep there and have meal cooked for him, but he couldn't put $10 bucks in his pocket and take him to McDonalds. How is this system still in existence? I personally think the whole thing is a joke and if all these schools getting hit finally causes a revolt of them leave the NCAA and destory the whole frickin thing then good.
What gets me about all this is: ALL THIS SO WE COULD SUCK?! USC, Alabama...cheat = national championships. Miami? Cheat, and Larry Coker/Randy Shannon will piss it away in mediocrity. If there is an upside to this, it's that Shalala is going down with the ship. Goodbye, toad.
That was the most unintelligible, rambling interview I've heard in a while. Luke sounded like he was the one being investigated.
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/c...may_need_to_start_over_after_booster_nev.html LOL! and the idiot journos get started. The saving grace is if they limit the scope to the offenses during the statute window. Then we will be hit like OSU and USC..and that's it. (I'll take it) But let's drop the "rogue booster" crap. As if this guy was sneaking around the program. This scumbag had his name on the players lounge, and was invited onto the field and given awards for his donations that he made with ponzi money. This moron got suites at Cane games. You now how hard it is to get a suite for a canes game?
Exactly, how can you cheat...and still suck? And Randy Shannon? I'd never believe that one, if anything he went overboard being a "square", Fellas, these things start out with a ton of hype and heavy breathing, usually end with a "that is not so bad".
People blame the NCAA b/c "these kids need to be paid! They come from poor backgrounds and need money!" Needing money so you can help your mom pay the bills at home is one thing. However, they dont need to be taking yacht rides and banging prostitutes...
True, they don't "need" those things, but why shouldn't they be allowed to partake if they want to? If they get caught by the cops with a hooker then they get caught. It only happens everyday in this country. Why does the NCAA care? The NCAA is a system of ridiculous, nonsensical rules that are meaningless in modern society.
Your boy is a P.I.M.P.........this story isnt going away anytime soon.....this dude is gonna be the Canseco of the booster world....watch the deals he makes..
Why shouldnt the NCAA care that people are breaking the law??? Why shouldn't the players be allowed to break the law of solicitation? There are a lot of flawed dumb things about the NCAA... but paying players absurd amounts of money under the table, paying for illegal activities, etc is not one of those dumb things...
this is pretty optimistic bro...it seems they are in trouble....especially with what is going on THROUGHOUT CF right now....
I can't see us getting anything worse than USC. But even then, that would be death for the program, which has been financially fragile for a while now. I would venture to guess it is much easier than conning millionaires into a ponzi scheme. This wasn't just some rich booster. This was a sociopath and a con artist. Anyone that is able to pull off a billion dollar ponzi scheme should be able to deceive Donna Shalala and Mike Dee.
The NCAA is not the police. They have a system of rules which outlaw "improper benefits". The details of what the benefits were reallya ren't that relevant except it makes a better story. And I still don't understand why a player shouldn't be allowed to accept a gift from afan of the program. If I'm a huge Miami fan and I see Stephen Morris at a Friday's one night, why can't I buy him a drink, or a meal?
There really wasn't anything serious once Shannon took over. The Miami NW guys didn't really get much, if anything. There is no upside to this. Even a USC-level punishment would kill the program.
Because no news organization would pay a guy in jail, and any funds paid would have to be reported beforehand. I don;t think some 75k a year yahoo.com schlub is going to risk jailtime to pay this scumbag.
The guy owes $20M in restitution. His motivations at this point are clear. What was paid exactly to the NW recruiting class? The media will do their best to make it as sleazy a story as possible. But all that matters is the NCAA proving it.
B/c if thats all it was... there wouldnt be a problem. The problem comes in when you are handing Wilfork $50,000. Paying guys for production on the field for sacks, fumbles, TD's, bounties, etc. When you are paying recruits to come play at your school. And thats why they have the rules. A guy selling one of his jerseys or something? Ya, I agree... who cares. Taking money under the table to go to a school or paying for on-field production? You dont see the problem with that?
There's no proof of any wrong doing aside from a check written to a Clint Hurrt which may or may not be a cashed check, and was supposedly payed back. This isn't OSU or USC. Nobody is hiding anything. Miami self-reported these violations a year ago. Like I said, it's not about how much **** this guy can sling. It's how much he can prove, and a picture of a check to an assistant who doesn't work here anymore, and one player speaking out won't get the job done. And if anybody believes Yahoo didn't pay Shapiro for this story.... LOL.
sure..politics won't be played with this. The whole investigation will be fair and compliant and above board. LOL.
I would suggest that you predict DOOM instead of this rosy picture you are painting. It would make alot of us feel better. and no..this scumbag is not being paid. it would have to be reported. So far, no report of any payment whatsoever.
Where are these allegations? The Yahoo report only indicated that Aldarius was given cash gifts. The rest of the stuff is a dinner and some drinks at a strip club. Nobody was legitimately bought and paid for. This is clear by the fact that Patrick Peterson isn't named, and that Matt Pachan was only given a meal at Shapiro's home. Thats not buying. Thats an insult to the players.
