It is quite odd. Many Dolphins fans are also Canes fans, so I'm interested to see how this will play. I'm a Gators fan myself, but even I know this is much more appropriate in Jacksonville where, you know, the Gators sometimes play.
@ByTimReynoldsTim Reynolds Everyone's missing the bigger story on this Dolphins-Gators thing. It's the first time Gators will want to go to the home of the 'Canes. 11 minutes ago via TweetDeck
It seems flat out stupid to me, especially in light of the recent UM problems- a slap in the face for the home college team. I'm no great fan of either college team, but this whole thing is void of logic and reason.
Meh. I think it is sort of a non story to me. Of course, I am also a Gators fan so take this opinion for what it is worth. However, I am not sure if any further tickets are being sold to a PRO game for a college reunion. Just like any other halftime show/event, these things are added on, and might be cool, but no one is paying good money for the halftime show.
This. Although, maybe it's not the best choice of ideas for the Miami Dolphins, why have the Jaguars thought of this? I mean, in a city that loves College Football and where the Florida Gators are undoubtedly the #1 fan choice here, why not do this here? The Jaguars had a wonderful grass roots campaign last year that helped sell out their games. This year they have been crushed with the lockout, but ideas like these would absolutely bring people in. On 9/11, their hope opener, against a division foe, who is down and should be a beatable opponent for them, they still have close to 20,000 tickets left unsold. Sorry, get off the Jaguars soap box.
and add angry fans, who will be booing (Canes & Seminole fans) some of which will be tanked up on alcohol, as well as Gator fans tanked up, and you have a recipe for disaster. A PR boondoggle by this ownership & front office. But we expect nothing less of them
The problem is, UM doesn't have a real home field. They play their home games on someone else's home field. As disrespectful as some Cane fans think this is, the blame lies with the school, not the Dolphins.
I don't see anything wrong with UM playing their games at Landshark Stadium or whatever it's called now.
Well since the OB is gone, its the ONLY place they can play. Except for the phantom stadium that Stringer Bell is going to tell us about.
Where the OB used to be??? Nothing wrong necessarily. But obviously there are people who are upset about the Dolphins not caring much for UM. The Hurricanes have put themselves in this position. Maybe build their own stadium? How much interest has the school shown in doing that???
I'm both a HUGE Dolphins and 'Canes fan.....I see nothing wrong with this and could care less. Do you white Americans that are angry about this also get angry when you see a Cuban flag hanging from a rearview mirror?
Well, I dislike all 3 florida teams, so while I agree it's stupid, I disagree that it's that big of a deal. people waste way too much time and energy getting worked up over silly crap like this. life is too short.
Yes I do!!! To me, this is sort of typical Miami area fan reaction, utter indifference punctuated by outrage, then sliding back into indifference.
This is how I feel. Hyde may try to create a story here and I'm sure some Gator haters will buy in, but most of the more casual Cane and Seminole fans will barely notice.
Even though I'm a Florida resident I could barely care less about UM, UF or FSU. But some things you just leave alone. No matter how you slice it, Miami is home to the Hurricanes. So to honor Gators fans in a Miami stadium just seems a bit odd. Why stir it up when Dolphins games are supposed to bring together UM, UF, FSU fans. Personally, as I said, I could give a toss. But having grown up down here and seen some of the silliness of the rivalries down here- it just doesn't add up. Bad marketing idea.
Who the heck cares about the Canes? Why should the Fins care about the Hurricanes? B/c they rent our field? The Fins would be better off if the Hurricanes wernt ripping up their field a day before we have to play on it. But what choice do the Fins have? Imagine if they didnt allow the Canes to rent their field? Imagine how pissed Canes fans would be then, lol. Oh, the outrage about "poor PR" would really be on... Be greatful we let you use our field b/c you couldnt maintain/build your own stadium... and stop *****ing about what we do with it...
The "field" is in Miami. It's just not a well thought out marketing plan. And I'm not a fan of any of the state schools, nor am I *****ing and moaning from that perspective. Having grown up down here I think that it's a stupid idea.
I grew up down there too. And I graduated from both UF and UM. Comparatively, UM fans are indifferent. I see this as a non-story for the vast majority.
The biggest issue with this PR stunt is that that this franchise needs PR stunts like this to sell out a game. It's embaressing. It's built out of not enough winning over the last decade. If we started out 4-1, there would be no problem selling out the game, but the odds are that won't happen, so the organization pre-plans for it with some ridiculous "celebration" of an event that only took palce two years. Are people nostalgic for that Gator team already? And what exactly are the Fins going to do which is cool enough or big enough to convince somebody to go to the game that wouldn't have gone otherwise? Just makes no sense.
This isn't the point though at all. The PHins are a professional football franchise with a base of fans that represent fans from a large number of college teams supporting them. An especially large number of fans have ties to one of the major Florida college programs. Since the Phins have no actual tie to the Gators themselves this move makes no sense and it does run the risk of alienating fans of the other college programs. There is no reason for a professional football franchise to put on an event celebrating a college program. This has no upside for the Dolphins. It's a PR mistake whether some would like to realize it or not. Just a dumb idea.
I grew up down here and still live down here. I dont care about the Canes, Gators, or Seminoles. And I dont think its significant at all. I mean, are the Canes and Gators even rivals? Its not like FSU... This is more of a thing IMO where anything that happens around this team is going to explode into a big deal. And really, these "stories" are going to keep breaking about these random insignificant things (a jets t-shirt?) until the team starts winning. Whatever...
Only white Cane fans will be upset with this? LOL. Jesus.... How does everything turn into racial discussions?
Thank you, very well put. This really isn't that big of a deal- my immediate reaction, this sniff test, was that Ross is an idiot for doing this.
Fact is it's just a dumb idea Fin. You have to understand how fickle fans are. You don't risk turning off part of your fan base to honor a college football program you have no ties to. Senseless. It's not a big deal to me either but I have a marketing background and I can tell you from experience that this will put off a large number of people. Why make that decision? It was a bad idea.
If we dont draft Pouncey this year... no way this happens. Thats where the idea came from, and where the connection was made...
Disagree. This was an idea to sell tickets to Gator fans. Has nothing to do with Pouncey. Was a gimmick to tie into the Gators fan base for some support for a game. What they didn't take into consideration is the lost ticket revenue from Nole or Hurricane fans that do care about this. THat's why I stated that regardless of how some of us feel about it that it is a mistake because a good number of people will care about it. That fact makes this a really flawed promotion from a marketing standpoint.
Do you actually read the things I write?????????? I clearly stated it was a dumb idea, and then I even more clearly stated that I like the fact that as a Canes fan, I can help ruin it by showing up in Canes gear from head to toe. Then in another clear statement, I said, I like the media getting it out there for that reason!! You won't see me crying about it all over the Dolphins message boards though because I have no AGENDA against Mr. Ross like you do....
There have been a lot of lost season ticket holders this season that have not returned. A boatload of them are Gators fans. Getting them to come to one game is the reason. A stupid one but given the fact that they drafted a Gator in the first round tells me Ross tries to hard to appease his players sometimes.
I think the net effect will be positive. I don't see any Hurricane or FSU fans not purchasing a ticket bc of this promotion. JMO.
Me either EXCEPT its in Broward County where the kids who attend UM have a long way to travel with only one way to get there.
