This is why there should be no hesitation in firing Daboll and Nolan

Both of them can come up with creative, clever plans, and fine individual plays, and as much of a cliche as it is, they don't adjust worth a damn.

This is about the 4th or 5th game this season going back to the start where we've had our quarterback getting hit and sacked constantly, and the every down protection scheme is generally either just the 5-linemen, or those five linemen plus Bush(Which I'd go so far as to say is not at all helpful). It worked well the first two quarters, and it's worked well elsewhere, but this like the Eagles game and a handful of others was really problematic at times. It's like I'm watching Mike Martz circa 2003 call plays. That middle portion of the game was just brutal, with the Patriots having multiple defenders showing blitz(and generally bringing it), and then we've got five guys with Bush running a flare route out of the backfield.

Mike Nolan is the same kind of deal. This is four games so far vs. the Patriots, and he's not shown he's able to come up with a game plan to where they can't run away in terms of score at times. Virtually every defensive coordinator we've had since Tom Brady came into the league has been able to have at least one game where they've shown they can stop or slow the Patriots down. Nolan hasn't.

The Patriots came out in a fair amount of more balanced sets earlier in the game, and the Dolphins overwhelmed them by dropping loads of pressure on them with multiple defender blitzes. The Patriots adjusted by going 4 or 5-wide, and Nolan backed off. That in itself is not a problem, there's a difference between blitzing on potential blockers and blitzing when every skill position is likely going to run a route, but we couldn't do anything to stop it. That had to be pretty high on the list of things to expect from the Patriots, and Brady was clearly rattled enough you think you could keep the pressure coming rather than immediately start playing it safer? I didn't really see how much more Odrick at Rush end or Soliai at Nickel DT we got, but I'm sure that was another charming factor.

They're both fools gold. **** them. Merry Christmas!

I'm still struggling to understand why we hired Daboll in the first place, a guy whose Cleveland offense was statistically worse than Dan Henning's last year. Whoever makes decisions like this should be fired.

Makes you wonder if pats went 5 wide all game if they would have just blown us out. I agree that we really don't have a "2nd offense"
To go to when things are getting out of control.

Facing the spread against the pats will have the same results until our safety position is addressed. Reshad jones on the 3rd and 5? What do you have to lose by getting up in welkers face? He burns you for a TD? Doesn't matter

we've struggled vs five wide all season... not sure why every team doesn't do it 100% of the time.

A part of me wonders if Daboll is doing that b/c Moore's strength is down the field not the short/intermediate stuff that the situation called for?

As for Nolan, there are some things I'm not in love with about our D, it's good, but I think we need better athletes in some positions.

Cleveland last year scored 271 points in 16 games....Cleveland this year has scored 209 in 15 games.

Miami last year scored 273 points in 16 games...Miami this year has scored 310 points in 15 games.

Looks like Daboll has made a big difference. Although Miami has gone up against weaker defenses this year.

Reality is Miami has been in rebuilding for 4 years now. The team still lacks depth and a couple of blue chip play-makers. Coaches have done all they could given the talent.

The other point is there was a LOCKOUT! and Miami had 5 positions out of the 11 on offense in which new players started. Everyone knew that teams with new coordinators and players were going to struggle early on which is exactly what happened. How quickly fans forget.

I was left scratching my head numerous times today, more so with Daboll. Defensively it looked like we stopped blitzing as much, which was frustrating. I'd rather go down trying to really get to Brady than just rush four and try to cover. But I also thought we were tired and stopped executing in the second half. Brady just kept dinking and dunking. But he was a bit more accurate and we weren't tackling as well as we were in the first half.

I'm not sure what Daboll was doing about half the time. I don't know how many simple run plays we ran of first down, but it was far too many. Can't we dink and dunk a bit too, at least on early downs? And can't we do something to get the ball out quicker during the second half when Moore was getting pressured more often? Like with the defense, I think part of the problem was just lack of execution in the second half. And to his credit nearly every deep pass attempt had a chance to score. If not for the wind on the one side of the field we might have had a TD instead of an INT and we would be less critical.

My critiques aren't major issues. I think both coordinators have done well this year, or at least the second half of the year. I'm not sure I would have a big problem with keeping the staff as it is right now going into next year. Though Bowles would worry me since I have no idea what his tendencies are from just two games.

it starts turning into either throw it deep or get sacked.

the problem with using Bush as a feature back is that you will wear him out quickly if you want to use him more in the passing game. this is made worse because Daniel Thomas seems needs a few carries to get going and if he is not breaking for 10 yards is more likely to get small gains. But I think he should have a few less carries and be targeted more in the passing game.

The Pats had adjusted to what we were doing on both sides of the ball. I don't know why we don't mix in a short passing game. DB's start dropping back more because Moore has burned them deep. I also don't know why we don't run more screens. There are 3 legitimate targets we could be using in the screen game in Bush, Thomas, and Clay. That would keep the rush back and the DBs honest.

I would like to try Clyde Gates on slants and similar patterns to see what he can do with the ball

I don't understand it when Daboll has the QB under center on third and long any more than I did when Henning did it.....

It was funny because the pressure was eating Brady alive in the first half so Belichik decides to start dinking and dunking on us. The pats really started just throwing quick, short passes to counteract the blitz. These short passes reduced the effectiveness of our blitzes because the ball would be gone before the blitzer even got close to Brady. It was frustrating watching, that's for sure. I felt like in the second half I was watching a game of Madden where one player figures out one thing that works and keeps running the same one or two plays over and over again and the defense not being able to figure it out.

I think I would have blitzed the B gaps and tell the D-Line to get their hands up (same with the blitzers) and try to bat the balls down at the line. Then you have your cornerbacks crash the short routes, with safety help over the top. Ironically, this is what we did with the Bills and it gave them fits. I think we were scared that Brady would beat us deep if we did that though... I don't get it though at least try it rather than have them dink and dunk us down the whole field.

The hiring of Daboll made perfect sense really. He certainly wasn't going to get any offers from other teams after his experience in Cleveland last year. With Sparano on the hot seat after Ross tried to get rid of him after last season, no quality offensive coordinator was going to risk coming to Miami for one year and have to deal with Chad Henne as his starting QB. So with no other job offers coming his way and no top offensive coordinator wanting the job with the Dolphins, Daboll was the best the Dolphins could hire for their offensive coordinator position.

It is obvious that the team has an overall lack of talent on both the offensive and defensive units, as well as a severe lack of quality coaches on the staff. The lack of overall player talent is the fault of Ireland, who needs to be fired immediately. Hopefully the next head coach will assemble a better coaching staff which can make the necessary adjustments as the game goes along, so that the Dolphins can actually win games like the one yesterday.

Maybe not so much of a difference... Miami is scoring 3.6 more ppg this year (17.1-20.7) gaining 1.9 more yards per game, whereas Cleveland is scoring 3.0 FEWER points (16.9-13.9) while gaining 2.4 MORE yards per game (289.7-292.1). If we factor in Bush's long TD runs, it would seem that Daboll's influence is negligible...
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PS: Bush is the #9 rusher(1.086 yds), Moore is the #11 rated passer (89.8 QBR), and Marshall is the #8 receiver (1,177 yds), and yet we're the #21 scoring offense!

This is nothing more than a re-birth of the "K-Gun" originated by the Buffalo Bills. It's difficult to defend against this no huddle offense and results in high offensive productivity, but when you face a defense that can shut it down, all that offense still results in Super Bowl losses.

Ask Jim Kelly. Four consecutive Super Bowl appearances...four straight losses
