ESPN's Chris Mortensen has insinuated it. Agent Drew Rosenhaus has asserted it. Half the Miami fan base is clamoring for it. But it still seems painful for some fans to think that the Dolphins could be parting ways with Jason Taylor

That being said, the prospect of landing a Pro Bowl cornerback in the prime of his career lessens the blow considerably, and that’s exactly what Lito Sheppard represents.

    Thanks for the post, ATV!

So how would you feel if this trade went down?

That old rumor rears its head again.Sorry but I think its no more than press speculation based on unsubstantial evidence and the need for material to talk about.

Well it's worth a look if Philly decides to put him on the trading block especially of there is a hold out. I checked out his contract and it looks pretty good value for a Pro Bowl corner. http://www.eaglescap.com/Players/LitoSheppard.html
    He would cost in
    2008 3,456,720
    2009 4,457,280
    2010 3,707,280
    2011 4,258,120 against the cap.

My main concern would be his injury issues. However, because Sheppard is on a very economical long term contract, Philly would be very reluctant to trade him away.

Am I remembering correctly when I say that Lito Sheppard has bad knees? And if so, what does his long term future look like? If I'm remembering correctly, then this is a horrible trade senario. I'd rather just keep JT.

I think half the reason they want him gone is that he wants a new contract. If he came here we would have to pay him big.

I may be wrong, but it certainly looks like Taylor's heart is already in Hollywood. He wants to be a movie star, and football has become old-hat to him.

Hey... Jason has always been all-about Jason... so, I say trade him to a team close to Hollywood. I'm getting sick of all the speculation, the articles, the rumors, the he-said-then-he-said crap... I'm sick of it all.

    Get rid of him.

It'll be a real pleasure watching an egomaniac like him fall flat on his face in Hollywood when he discovers that being a respectable actor is about 1000 times harder than it looks.

This piece of fan journalism is pure speculation and only tolerable because it is fan journalism. I would not like it had it come from the Herald or Sentinel.

Hmm, I disagree. There are a plethora of DEs in the NFL who will never sniff double digit sacks. To hint that football has become old-hat is reaching IMO. Jason can still get to the QB and that skillset alone makes him very valuable in the NFL.

I see both sides of the story. Parcells wants Taylor to be there to lead, yet Taylor believes he can burn the candle on both ends. Maybe he can, I mean really, who knows Jason better than Jason??

JT for Lito Sheppard straight up, while unlikely, would be fine by me. Lito as the #1 CB and Allen as the #2, with Jason Allen and a hopefully-healthy Yeremiah Bell at the two safety spots, gives me a lot more confidence in the secondary.

Actually this recent regurgitated rumor supposedly was uttered by Drew Rosenhaus in Sports Xtra. Now there is a disinterested and credible commentator for you :wink2:

I think Hugo picked up on that. You cant blame him.He is a writer and material is thin during the off season :pointlol:

If this was going to happen then I think it would of already. Our best bet to not have to give up anything else with Taylor was probably packaging him in that LBooker trade. I duno I just dont see this happening, would be nice though.

The logic behind trading JT is that if he does decide to pursue his acting career rather than playing for a rebuilding Miami Dolphin team then we would get nothing for his value as a player.
Like many I hate to see a player of his caliber with what he has meant to the Dolphins go. With the loss of Zack it would mean the loss of the Dolphins two best players but that is JMO.
It has come time however to either try to recoup something for a player we are likely to lose soon anyway or risk not getting anything when he walks away.

Personally, I think a player for player trade like this is just what we could benefit from. philly is alot closer than we are and JT could be the player to help them over the top. plus the fact, we've done a lot more moves on the DE position and JT won't be here anyway when were are legit again. Sheppard, on the other hand, would immediately upgrade our CB position and could possibly be our best CB since Surtain and he is still young enough to be around here in our plans later on even when we have it all together again.

I saw Sports Extra live on Sunday, and Rosenhaus made sure clarify that while a Taylor/Lito swap makes perfect sense, the idea came out of nowhere and out of fun, basically. Funny, though, because it makes perfect sense for both teams, and both organizations are in uneven situations with both players.

Anyone know what exactly was said by Mort?

I would be ALL OVER this trade if I were Ireland et el.

I love JT and what he has meant to the organization, but a solid Pro-Bowl calibur CB could make a HUGE difference for us at this juncture.

EDIT: This could also be the best scenario for JT to get a ring, something I would personally be cheering for if the opportunity were there.

I just don't see this happening because I don't think this office thinks highly of CB's, which is why we didn't draft any this year even though we are weak in that area.. If it were Lito + a DE or LB for JT then I see it happening.

I saw the same thing, however, this trade is awfully lopsided to the Fins. JT, while twice the player that Lito is, is still going to be 34 at the seasons' start. Swapping a 27 yr old pro bowler for a 34 yr old pro bowler just doesn't make sense as a straight up deal for the Eagles...

call me skeptical, but if Lito was "so good", why would Philly have chased Samuels at top-dollar and try to unload someone that was good and happy with their contract that is already on the roster?

    Caveat Emptor, guys.

Same reason Al Davis chased DeAngelo Hall when he already has Nnamdi Asomugha on the roster.

well I had posted a lot of this beofre the draft... If you look at this I think it's an unfair trade for the Fins. We get rid of a player than CAN take you to the next level and can help the younger players as well.

The reason the the Eagles want to let go of Lito is that he has been hurt EVERY SINGLE SEASON... I mean I would love to have a job where I don't have to work the whole year round.....

Why else did the go after Asante Samules

Right... that's why he's on 'Dancing with the Stars' instead of working out with his football team? Sorry, bro... saying Jason Taylor's heart is more in Hollywood than Miami right now isn't a reach at all.

For starters, this is not a piece of fan journalism. It's an opinion column.

I've covered many other teams other than the Dolphins in my years, but it just so happens that I know the Dolphins best having grown up in Miami. And while I did grow up rooting for the team, I do not allow it to influence my writing.

There is no speculation in this piece. I clearly state that the proposed trade is nothing more than rumor and innuendo, and even mention several sources that are doing the speculating.

My column deals with the pros and cons of such a scenario, and serves as jumping point into Miami's need for an upgrade at cornerback as well as an overview of where Jason Taylor stands at this point in his career. I also add in statistical evidence to support my stance.

But if you want to take cheap shots and call my work "pure speculation" and "fan journalism" go ahead. After all, a man will hear what he wants to hear and disregard the rest.

    Thanks Crunch!

You try and provide a glimmer of original insight and opinion during the depths of the off season for the sake of the real fanatics (hence our name, realfootball365.com) but some people just can't help but be negative and try and put a negative spin on things.

To each his own, I guess.

By "same reason", are you referring to the owner being senile and needing an assistant to feed him pudding and change his diaper? Or do you mean that CB is a vital position in today's pass-happy NFL, and teams will jump on a weak corner like a coyote on a three legged poodle?

If, by some miracle, the Eagles put that on the table (they wouldn't), I'd snap it up in half a second, and I'm pretty sure Jeff Ireland would too.

Whichever one turns out to be true. At this point I have no reason to explain the Eagles' acquisition of Samuel and desire to get rid of Sheppard. None.

My brother-in-law is a life long Eagles fan. When they got Samuel, I suggest this trade to him and he said "hell yea". Of course he has less than zero pull with the Eagles organization now a days ;-) My point is that, at least in the fan's eyes there has been at least some reliability/heath issues with Sheppard. Cant stay healthy a whole season... blah blah. In my eyes, still a pro-bowler and much better than nothing for Taylor.

Why would Philly want to do this trade? Makes NO sense to me.

Personally I'm thrilled Tunaland is rebuilding without throwing away draft picks or trading desperately for guys who we think are hot. This team needs the basics, then in a year we'll be ready for the skill positions, then in another year we might be in a position to fine tune specific areas of weakness. But for now, I like what they're doing and how they're doing it.
