As you guys know, Brian Schottenheimer has decided to call it quits! Furthermore, TS is now the new Jets OC. Can anyone tell me about his style of offense? I know he's a big fist pump guy, I know he likes to run the ball, I know he's good with the offensive line, I know he's conservative.

But how is his passing game? The Jets will only get so far if Sanchez develops into the QB we hope he can be. Can TS help him? I mean, even though you guys started off horrible, he still had everyone playing hard. There's rumors that Todd Haley might be coming along with him to work on the passing game while TS works on the running game.

Sparano is a run first guy, but seemed to be coming around to a more open offense this past season. The players will love him and play hard for him, but in the end, Mark Sanchez is still your QB.

Well, there will be an increase in fist pumps on the NY sidelines but there will also be an increase in face palms on your couch watching his offense.

It's hard to say. Up until this season he left the offense in Henning's hands. This past off-season he said he realized he had to change and brought in Daboll. That offense was kind of a cross between the Pats passing attack and the Jets run offense. He's generally conservative in terms of when he punts vs. when he goes for it. But when he was a college coach he did run a wide open passing attack, so who knows what he'll want to do as the OC?

I don't know what his playcalling will be like, but your guys won't quit on him, unlike a certain other former Jets playcaller.

The only thing I can say about Sparano is he became a HC from an OL coach, and one of our weakness while he was here was our OL...

Absolutely clueless pretty much sums it up. Runs an ancient run first offense that's useless in today's NFL. Horrific at developing a QB. And put together one of the worst Offensive Lines in Dolphins franchise history. Prefers FG's, and then rips off epic fist pumps at the conclusion of made ones. Jets couldn't have made a worse hire.

Darrelle, do you really want to know the truth about Tony Sparano, what all of us Dolphins fans had to figure out over 4 years, or do you just want to go on your way blissfully unaware?

He doesn't coach to win games, he coaches not to lose them. And he's not very good at it.

    Thanks, guys.

I'm truly mixed about this hire. I will feel extremely better if we hire Todd Haley as well since they both want to coach together. That way Haley can call the passing plays while TS can call the running plays.

Tony's a good guy but our offense was nothing short of frustrating during his tenure here. As the HC, it fell squarely on his shoulders in my opinion.

Yeah cause that will work for about 5 minutes till they start arguing about when to call a run and when to call a pass. Truly a New York Jets idea. Personally I look forward to it :)

Hate to sound like a broken record, but I am astonished and thankful the Jets didn't hire from within. Bill Callahan was there as an OL coach and is a pretty damn good OC....

The last time he was partial OC was in Dallas and they didn't do too bad.

I wouldn't hold his tenure here against him.

I have to say that the fact the Jets named TS their offensive coordinator is a complete shock to me. Basically because it was the play of the offense over the last few seasons which led to his dismissal by the Dolphins. Like many others, I assumed he would be hired as an offensive line coach by another NFL team, but I never expected him to be named an offensive coordinator.

All I can add is that I am certainly glad he will be the offensive coordinator of the Jets next season and not the Dolphins, HC or offensive coordinator. The one good thing about TS is that he does do a great fist pump. I just don't know how effective the fist pump will be if he is sitting in the coaching booth, high up in the stadium.

Sparano is a pretty detail oriented guy. He's also pretty conservative in that he sticks to the script. He's not going to deviate from his gameplan or make on the fly adjustments very often to compenate. After these past few years, I don't think he will run as much. I think you guys may actually see more passing than you are used to. I don't know how aggressive Tony will be trying to move the ball up the field, but history dicates that he'll play for 1st downs, and fold in the redzone and settle for field goals. If you guys can get Tony to somehow figure out how to get your guys in the endzone, you should be in good shape. Sad to say, Tony was never good at finding the endzone here in MIA.

Considering the Jets have a quarterback who is struggling with his career hanging in the balance, and Tony Sparano did such great things with Chad Henne during his time here, this is a perfect hire for the Jets. :shifty:

Great. SO the Dolphins need to hire a guy to see which guy has his lips moving before a play, to know whether it is a run or a pass.

    Good to know.

As for TS. This is all you need to know:

If they made any of us New York Jet King for a day, they would do these three things:

    1. Give Mark Sanchez a 15 year extension with a no-trade clause, and part ownership in the team at 30 million a year.
    2. Immediately trade Darrelle Revis to Miami for Nolan Carroll.
    3. Hire Tony Sparano as offensive coordinator.

^THIS, and if this happens with Haley and Sparano (who are very tight friends) just watch Cowboys games from 5 or 6 seasons ago to get a sense of how your offense will function.

    Darrelle,

Sparano is not as bad as most have said here. He is very conservative and might fit in perfectly with your D. You will become somewhat frustrated with the O as it will go into a shell once they have a lead. He has not shown to make very good adjustments to the game plan once the clock starts. He celebrates FGs like the pasties celebrate TDs...

That said, he is a coach that every player will love and will not quit on him (something you guys have seen). His short passing game is good and should fit right into Sanchez weaknesses. He likes to set limits to # of plays of his backs, keeping them fresh. You'll have to replace LT, because he'll need another back. He doesn't ask the QB to make too many reads on the field, another plus for Sanchez. He's as hard a working NFL coach as there is. He loves the TE in the passing game, another plus for you guys. He knows the division well and has come up with some good game plans against teams with better talent than he has.

The biggest complaint here has been his development of the OL. Some of the negative is because of a) poor draft choices and b) penchant for older, used up guys that used to play for him. Keep him away from the Dallas and Miami roster. However, in his defense, as I said, that weakness of his is not all on his shoulders as the personnel acquisition was weak along the OL.

Keep Rex's hands out of the offensive cookie jar, and you might be surprised what he can do with Sanchez.

EDIT: I might also add that when a player is cursed out by Rexy, they'll come running to Sparano and he'll smooth things over, so that could be a plus too.

Considering Tony has very little experience with calling plays, I'm not sure this was the best move for the Jets. First of all, you mention he is good with the offensive line. Things haven't turned out so well for the Phins over the last 3 years when it comes to the line. Long was a no-brainer but outside of him (and maybe Incognito to an extent), Sparano's line has failed miserably year in and year out - considering he was known for developing a strong O Line.

Put simply, Tony will add some "Cl" to that coaching staff, so for the first time in some time, they can actually spell "Class!"

Can't root for him on game days, of course, but he's a good dude.

The players will like him but he is conservative ,unimaginative and slow to adjust to the other teams changes. He lost many games in the last few minutes because of that.

Also he has a tendency to tinker with the OL constantly giving them very little time to gell as a unit.

He also is a poor time manager but that should not be a problem as Rex will be making those calls.

I would rather have Brian Schottenheimer to be frank.
