Yankees trade Montero for Pineda

Discussion in 'Other Sports Forum' started by BleedinGreenNC, Jan 13, 2012.

  1. They also signed Hiroki Kuroda, apparently they are looking for another bat.

Heard Damon could be in play.

Signing Kuroda is a brilliant. Great #4 starter/insurance in case Nova regresses. It also minimizes the reliance on Burnett. Burnett should be gone and Hughes the #5.

Montero for Pineda was a great move by Cashman. Basically traded a power bat with no position and no available playing time for a RH version of CC and a better fastball.

  3. Excellent post! Last i heard they were trying to bring in Pena, i really see Burnett getting traded. With the contract of Pineda, we could eat the hit we would take by trading AJ

    Two things:

One: Eduardo Nunez deserves a shot to hit everyday at some point. If I were a NYY fan I might go for that option over Pena.
Two: Bay for Burnett makes a hell of a lot of sense. Two players that need a change of scenery in a bad way. Garcia would still be an emergency starter. Mets need inning eaters bad and should have Kirk Nuewhenhaus (Sp is butchered) ready by mid May.

As a Yankee fan, I liked Montero but it was a good trade. Pitching was my main concern this year.

Excellent trade. Montero could not have been a longtime DH in NY with ARod and Jeter aging, and the Yanks have an above-average guy is Russell Martin, an average backup in Cervelli, a great defensive prospect in Austin Romine and a very raw but promising prospect in Gary Sanchez. Montero was truly a luxury.

Pineda shows all the signs of becoming an ace and the Campos kid was a top 5 prospect in the Seattle system. The Yanks still have Betances and Banuelos in their farm system, so they kept their top arms. I really like how Cashman is emphasizing the pitching heree. The Yankee starting rotation (plus Kuroda) is nasty now.

That DH spot is up for grabs this year (maybe Carlos Pena for a year). Next season ARod will probably man it full time, just in time for David Wright to opt out from the Mets. Interesting.

If it was my money, I'm bring in Manny Ramirez as a one year DH.

FML. I swear Ive never considered switching teams in any sport...Ive had the Mets Knicks, Phins, Islanders, Miami Hurricane Football and Syracuse basketball since I was 7 or younger. But if Wright goes and declines his option just to get out of dodge, I might have to consider becoming a NYY fan. That like the Yanks letting Jeter and Bernie walk in their primes.

  13. With the way the team is being run right now, i wouldnt be surprised if he did decide to leave, the Mets just waived one of their best prospects and the Astros picked him up. Fernando Martinez.

I was not in favor of waiving Fernando Martinez at the ripe old age of 23 especially when you probably could have snuck someone like Chris Schwinden or DJ Carrasco (at 1.75M) through the waiver process. But Fernando also what are believed to be arthritic knees and has never played more then 90 games. I was a big Fernando fan but this is why established players > prospects. The Mets, once upon a time were widely believed to have turned down the chance to bring in Manny Ramirez in a deal for Fernando. Omar Minaya declined. The result was not enough offense down the stretch in 2007. Granted Manny was out of baseball last year and declined sharply soon after but you never know how 2007 and 2008 could have changed.

For the record, Martinez was on no one's top 10 prospects for the NYM this year. He was well behind bats like Flores, Niewhenhaus, Vaughn and Puello and pitchers like Familia, Wheeler, Harvey, Meija, etc. The Mets farm system has grown a lot in recent years. Martinez barely even ranked in the top 20 at this point. Part of that is due to injury, part of that is because he never progressed as expected.

Would make sense for both teams and the Mets from a financial standpoint. Bay has 2 years left on his deal and a 3rd year that vests if he hits 500 AB's this year and next. Mets wont assume salary I think its safe to say but I think the idea of getting out from under Bay's 3rd year option would be appealing to the Coupons er Wilpons. Nov 14 1986-current and no WS titles. Sell Sell Sell! :(

  20. I think the Yankees would sweeten the deal by eating most of Burnetts contract.

Eh take Pelfrey instead! Please!!! He is torture to watch. Last year as bad as the Mets were I watched or listened to the radio for almost every Mets game. I purposely missed the games Pelfrey was starting.

Like the trade for both sides. Seattle needed a young impact bat, which they get with Montero while the Yankees get a young SP in Pineda.

Only negatives for both guys are Montero can't play a position so he's stuck at DH and his value isn't as high there and he's moving to a home ball park where its tough on RHH. As for Pineda he's moving into a tougher division to pitch in hitters parks, he had a very average 2nd half of the year (whether the hitters caught up to his stuff or he just got tired or it could be a mix of both but the kid is only 23 so he doesn't have a track record yet) and some scouts question his second and third pitches.

Again though I think it was a pretty fair/even trade for both clubs.

Agreed, although I believe the Yanks got the advantage on this one....23 year old, cost controlled, guy who is still learning how to pitch that throws 97? For a DH?

CC, Nova, and Pineda are going to be there for a long time...now if Hughes could only get his head out of his as# and pitch, they have the ability to have a very good rotation for years to come....

Now all they need is some actual hitters.....not home run guys....which Montero seems like he was...

I bet you'll see Hughes in the bullpen or traded. I kind of get the feeling the Yankees are a bit down on Hughes because of last year.

I think the bad 2nd half was due to two things:
One he had some elbow inflammation/tendinitis.
Two he had never thrown that many innings in his career.

They shouldnt do anything but let Hughes be the #5. If he fails you can always swap out him and Garcia but Hughes should be their #5. No pressure and no reason not to. If they trade a player when his value is at his lowest theyre dumb.

I just dont know where Hughes fits in, in the BP.....6th inning guy, filler? Long man?

love this below so true.....Love Steinbrenner and RIP, but since Cash has been his own man, the guy has been right on alot of moves....especially trades...

Their rotation is CC, Pineda, Kuroda, Nova and Hughes/Burnett/Garcia/Other. I'd probably make one of the last 3 or 4 guys earn that spot. Especially since Hughes showed up to camp last year out of shape and was pretty bad last year. I wouldn't guarantee anything for him, especially since he hasn't earned that spot. If he wins the job out of ST, great. If not maybe they can get him to regain his 2009 form when he was one of the better RPers in the game.

And when I say trade him, obviously I don't mean just dump him but if they can get good value or a player they're looking at that could help them, they shouldn't hesitate to deal him now. But like you said his value is down right now so me probably doesn't have much value at this point.

Hughes was very good in 2009 as the set up man, if he could regain his form a pen of him, Joba (assuming he's healthy), Soriano, Robertson and Rivera would be insane.

As for the quote you posted, agreed about the Davish stuff but the Yankees did trade their best prospect, so they take a bit of a hit in the farm system rankings.

They do, but they would have anyway because he was no longer in there system as he would have been in the Show this year...and again they traded basically a DH and took advantage of his little time he has there....lets say Montero start off bad first half or avg, the Yanks would have had to shell out more to get this deal done...

They get to keep, the B's, all there catching prospects, Mason, and add a guy who was a Top 5 prospect on a team with a damn good farm system in terms of pitching prospects....so I dont think it took that big a hit if any....

They lost their best prospect (a top 10 prospect in all of baseball), their system is going to take a hit, that's the way it works. It's not a knock on the Yankees' (or any team's) system overall but when you lose your best prospect whether he's traded or loses his prospect eligibility the team's system takes a hit. Everything else you said is right though.

I think the trade was smart for both clubs.......Seattle dealt from some depth to acquire a solid bat and fill a weakness....Yanks dealt from need of improved arms in trade (and combo with Kuroda signing) to fill their weakness, and moved an extra bat they had that didnt impact Catching position one bit.

If you view Montero as FARM rating player, sure they take a hit...however, if you view Montero as MLB graduate, and then move Campos into the FARM system, the rating just went UP for Yanks there too. Great farm arms....and still solid Catching depth (if you view Montero as C) to mature.

Locking up both these arms (Campos is promising too).....took the quality bat of Montero, and further along arm in Noesi to help Seattle. I think both Cashman, and Jack Z. improved their clubs.

Yanks now have SIGNIFICANT depth of Arms (w/youth)...have their remaining farm talent still (while adding arm to it), and MLB hitting lineup really wont miss a huge beat by moving Montero and adding a rotational DH (which really frees up days off for Arod, Jeter, Tex an even Cano).

Brilliant job and could not be happier with Yanks SP and Bullpen.....looking forward to Pitchers and Catchers showing up next month.

Not an improvement to what we have and roles served by Gardner (speed and D) or even Swisher (switch hitting RF/1B to rest Tex) at the moment...and no need from DH spot...Lefty is more desirable to balance what is a platoon role this season.

You like to WASTE your money?? bad idea all around on that one.

Dont see how this happens....but Mets will lose him to someone eventually I suspect.

Wright could opt out at the end of this year, so technically they could move A-Rod to DH, Wright to 3rd base....I think that's why they only want a 1 year DH contract this year.......

The money is the same too because Rivera comes off the books after this year sadly...

This incorrect. Wright can only opt out of his contract if he's traded. The Mets hold a 16 million dollar club option for 2013 (1 million dollar buyout).

I'd be surprised to see the Mets trade him, especially since they didn't want to trade Reyes. But I think the second Wright becomes a FA he runs out of NY.
