Definitely a guy on the rise due to how well they've adjusted the offense during the season to win games with Tebow. Is also only 39 but has been coaching in the NFL since 2000, spending the vast majority of that time working under Fox (although he was originally given a job by George Seifert). College starter at QB for Utah. Is in the young OC category like McDaniels and Garrett but does at least have a good 10+ years in the NFL as a coach, and definitely worth an interview if Denver loses. If they think Chudzinski isn't ready to be an HC it's hard to see them going with McCoy though.
HAHA thats funny. Will he drive his delorean down here? We all know that the only thing hes done is go back in time to 1929 with that offense theyve been running. Pass.
Not the best game to put on his resume today.....up against one of the worst defenses in the NFL....might be a guy that could use a player like RGIII though...
Yeah, lets get another conserative coach here. Thats EXACTLY what this team needs. MOAR GROUND AND POUND!
Mike McCoy may be an up and coming young coach, but he needs more seasoning, IMO. From an x's and o's standpoint, Mike doesn't strike me as a guy who has a full grasp of any particular offense at this point. He's tried running some spread option stuff with Tim Tebow, but you can tell that he doesn't understand the spread option enough to be able to counter teams when they take the zone read or the speed option away from him. That was exploited tonight. At the same time, he didn't run his base pro style offense well enough to get any production from the offense when they had Kyle Orton at quarterback over the past two years. This is really his only year where he has called plays though.
I have no idea why he would be a hot prospect. The Broncos offense was certainly not the reason they made the playoffs this season. It was the play of the defense for the majority of each game and some last second heroics by Tebow in games, which led to the Broncos finishing 8-8 and making the playoffs. Hopefully the thrashing the Broncos took from the Patriots yesterday will end any further discussion of the Broncos offensive coordinator possibly being the Dolphins next HC.
IMO, McCoy is worth considering. When Tebow was named the starter, he did his best to adapt the offense to cater to Tebow's strengths. He is apparently a guy who doesn't try to fit square pegs into round holes. With the limited passing ability of Tebow, he designed an offense that was #1 in rushing offense for 2011. When Orton was his QB the previous two seasons, Denver was 13th and 7th in passing offense.
I have to admit that I know very little in regards to McCoy. After your comments, I looked him up on the internet to see what his history in the NFL has been. After reading through his coaching history, I am not sure he is ready to be a head coach in the NFL yet, but if the Dolphins are forced to hire an assistant coach, as it now seems they will end up doing. He just might do as good a job as the Dolphins next HC as any of the other candidates they have interviewed so far. To be honest, none of the coaches being interviewed by the Dolphins right now get my toes tingling. Hopefully whomever they hire ends up being the next Bill Belichick, and not the next Tony Sparano, or Cam Cameron. At this point, it all one big crap shoot, as far as I am concerned.
After watching his offense perform 2x this year against a team we have to face 2x every year I'll pass.
That's not his offense. That's the offense he basically went with to fit Tim Tebow's talents. I will give him credit for that. He may not know much about the full arsenal of the option game or the spread option, but he at least didn't try to force Tim Tebow into a more pocket oriented offense. The thing is, I'm not sure what his offense would be, because he didn't run the offense in Carolina and while he was the offensive coordinator in Denver, he didn't call the plays until this year.
Tom Clements isn't even a candidate, and he isn't a candidate for any job. Even if he was, he isn't bringing Aaron Rodgers with him, which is his biggest claim to fame at this point. Carmichael also isn't bringing Brees with him. X's and O's have very little to do with being a head coach, but I would certainly give Mike McCoy more credit for devising a game plan to fit Tim Tebow's talents than I would give to Pete Carmichael Jr for being part of a scheme that has an elite quarterback to work with. It is almost like fans are simply looking at the teams with elite quarterbacks and deciding that their coaches have more to do with their elite status than they do. If we are going to base things off x's and o's, then I would much rather get someone that was able to produce with limited talent rather than getting someone that had success pimarily because he has great players.....see Cam Cameron.
This is gettingv old should we look at only bguys wher tghe players are sh*t? Carmichael isnt solely responsible for NO but saying he had 0 to do with it is dismissive. Hiring McCoy because of Tebow is just as risky. I mean form a design aspect it wasnt like McCoy had multiple options with Tebow
This. There's a lot more to being a head coach than just being an architect of a high-powered offense, especially if the driver is a Drew Brees or Aaron Rodgers. Mike McCoy is at least interesting because, to paraphrase Gary Stevens, he "made chicken salad out of chicken sh*t". But does he have the intangibles to be a good head coach? I guess Ireland and Ross will have to figure that one out. But it does drive me nuts that fans (and the media) tend to base coaching candidates almost solely on how their units perform. Carmichael might be a good head coach, but it would take more than just how his offense performs to convince me.
Raise your hand if you realized that McCoy could be brought in to develop Matt Moore? They worked together in Carolina.
Considering Ross and Ireland are hot to find a franchise QB, I'd say that bringing McCoy in for Moore would only be a possible side benefit and not a primary reason.
Are they? Could have hired a number of candidates by now, yet a guy whose resume is Tim Tebow, is the "hot name"?
Yes, he's a hot name. Joe Philbin was a hot name a few weeks ago. They're just doing due diligence and exploring their options instead of rushing into a hire.
