I met him recently probably just weeks prior to him discovering the tumors. I was actually going to work for him at PBA with the baseball team prior to me moving back to Bradenton. He seemed like an absolute wonderful genuine guy. Truly sad.

I will now call him Cody "Career .912 OPS vs. LHP" Ross. That's the only thing I can hang my hat on.

Seriously it's not a horrible signing (don't get me wrong it's not like Ross is very good either), 1 year 3 million to platoon against LHPers. An upgrade from Darnell McDonald (minus when David Price pitches).

With Crawford likely to miss all of ST....you may have Ross as your opening day LF.

    in other news:

The Orioles announced that they have signed Wilson Betemit to a two-year, Major League contract that includes a vesting option for 2014.

I'm ok with that, I'd rather have my players healthy in September and October than April. I hope Crawford or any player will take their time to heal and make sure they're 100% before playing games, especially ST games.

Never blamed the Sox missing the playoffs last year on their poor April, well poor 2 weeks anyway. But again I wish I had a healthy Buchholz and Youkilis in the line up in September instead of Andrew Miller/Tim Wakefield/Kyle Weiland/Erik Bedard/Mike Aviles/Jed Lowrie platoon.

Scott Boras = first ballot HOFer.

Wow, I thought the Pujols deal was bad but I'm finding it hard to see Fielder doing anything in the last 2 or 3 years of that deal based on his conditioning.

no kidding....nine-year, $214MM contract. The agreement -- the fourth largest in baseball history behind Alex Rodriguez's 2 mega-contracts and Albert Pujols' recent deal with the Angels -- will keep Fielder in the Motor City through his age 36 season for an average annual value of $23.78MM.

maybe he learns from Cecil's last few years??

Funny, I remember Dave Dombrowski saying that they weren't going to be doing anything crazy at the start of Winter meetings. That was when they were linked to Reyes.

This isn't crazy, though, it's asinine.

That's why you never believe what a player, agent, GM etc says.

Although some people feel Boras went right to the Tigers' owner and this was done over DD.

Fink your thoughts on Edwin Jax on a 1 year deal.....I like it, I wanted him on NY for a 1 year deal....better than Oswalt...

Also bro come on, make a 2012 Red Sox thread.....what are you waiting for a message from God?

With tons of question marks about Oswalt's back, I'd rather have Jackson than Oswalt as I don't think Oswalt can stay healthy enough to start 30 plus games. Obviously if Oswalt was healthy he's the better pitcher. As far as a 1 year deal, I'd take any pitcher on a 1 year deal.

As far as a Sox thread, I'm waiting for ST to start, there hasn't been much news to really get a discussion going.

I know I'm talking to a lot of Yankees and Sox fans - but damn, the MLB system sucks. As an Indians fan - watching the Tigers' owner be able to spend this much money on 3 DH's is disheartening.

As a small market fan - it is REALLY hard to get into baseball. At best, you have to hope that you put it all together and have ONE good year.

This. And again the Rays are a perfect example. They have to play in the same division as the Yankees and Red Sox and can overcome this. It can happen, it just starts with a good/smart FO.

Money doesn't solve everything. Just look at the Mets, Dodgers, and Cubs. All big market teams and all struggling. Its all about how smart you are with your money.

I think I would take E-Jax over Oswalt at this stage of their careers....he has more shut down potential....Oswalt I think would get worn down in the AL East and the AL in general this year...

Disappointing for you, not for me. I had read the Orioles had some interest but I think they were never more than a darkhorse candidate to sign him. I wouldn't have minded him coming to Baltimore.

It's possible Oswalt wouldn't fit in well in the AL, especially the East, so that's another possible negative on signing him.

And small market or big market.....good FO is more important then payroll.....Moneyball nominated for best picture - what other sign do you need????

Clearly it wasn't the best year for movies. I kind of enjoyed the Moneyball movie but in no way should it be up for Best Picture.

Rays signed Jeff Keppinger to a 1 year big league deal. Based on TB's past success of turning chicken s--t into chicken salad, I'm fully expecting Keppinger to put up Aaron Hill circa 2009 type numbers this year.
