I just don't understand what people want. We have a chance to bring in a guy that worked directly under one of the best quarterbacks in the game. Remember how many teams thought Aaron Rodgers was not a "franchise qb" during draft time. Im not gonna sit here and BS and say that he could be the next Rodgers because the odds of it are slim, but the guy would come in and know the system just as good as the head coach. His progressions out on the field will come easy to him, he will be ready. If we get him I will be more worried about the WR spot then the QB spot. a

Every FA or draft acquisition is a gamble obviously. The best any team can do, is find as much evidence as they can. 2 NFL games is evidence. May not be a lot, it may not be definitive, but neither is a full season, ask Matt Cassel. There is info to glean from his 2 games and there's red flags with every signing.

Something tells me if we had the second pick, you'd think the only quality starting QB available would be Luck. I just don't think we can do anything or sign anyone that will make you happy, quite frankly.

Can everyone please stop with this "Worked under one of the best QB's in the game" BULL****. Every great QB has a backup, should we sign them all because they learned under a great QB? That is absolutely ridiculous and if I hear it again I might blow my brains out. Chad Henne worked under one of the smartest QB's in the league yet on the field he still had NO INSTINCTS as a QB. It doesn't matter who you learn under while you are a backup you either have the natural instincts of the QB position or you don't. There is minimal you can learn from another QB.

As far as Flynn goes I'm not really sure he beats out Matt Moore honestly. I could see Moore doing great things in a well run offense.

Good lord...we could only hope they are dumb enough to pick Tannehill....a less polished McCoy.

I think that's largely another conversation (if you don't think he can start).

If you're pursuing the guy as a starting QB in the NFL, that is an uncommonly good deal for Miami. Look at what Arizona gave Kevin Kolb (in additional to the trade compensation). Matt Moore signed for what he did because he came here as the backup. They weren't offering him the chance to win the job outright. The Dolphins are reportedly offering Flynn the starting job (though I'm not taking that as fact).

Still, that's what he's being brought here for and it's a significant distinction. He's going to get starter money of some kind, that's just how it works when you bring a guy in for that purpose. Seattle is reportedly offering him the chance to compete, but I'm sure they're offering more than Matt Moore money.

I don't think it'd be viewed as a serious issue if the QB position had been settled. Most of us believe we've been a QB away from playoff contention the past few seasons (Chad Pennington certainly didn't temper that opinion).

How many of the top teams are flush with cap space? If we look at the teams making the splash free agent signings, they're largely the league's doormats. Tampa Bay, St. Louis, Buffalo. Washington had $36 million in space before the league confiscated much of it as punishment. Denver has cap room and they did make the playoffs (albeit with 2008 Dolphins-like blueprint). But I don't think their talent level is beyond ours. They started poorly and a QB change got them into the playoffs. And now they're after Manning.

On the subject at hand there really isn't any middle ground to be had, unfortunately.

I don't even know why you chimed in on this, tbh. considering my post was more of a sarcastic stretch at the trolls that have been advocating "any QB that isnt a 1st/2nd round prospect is bad" as of recent.

    Are you gonna be okay?

Philbin knows Flynn better than anyone. I'll take his word for it. The fact we're hosting him tells me Philbin believes he is the real deal.

That is fine, but let's leave Aaron Rodgers out of it. He has absolutely NOTHING to do with whether Flynn succeeds or not. Personally I'd love to see Flynn come in and COMPETE for the job. I'll be fairly angry if we hand it to him however.

I don't think it's that they're choosing Colt McCoy over anybody. They're just not heavily interested in the free agent route.

Mike Holmgren is seriously upset about not getting the #2 pick because he covets RG3. And they're believed to be in play for Tannehill.

    Well

in all honesty I feel it has a slight impact TBH.. but nothing huge. I mean learning behind Arod in Philbins system then coming to town here to play Philbins system as a starter, is a lot different than being a back up to a no-name, or someone like Tebow. I mean it has to have some weight to be able to play alongside and learn from arguably what will be one of the greatest ever. Sponging off of excellence has to have some value.... I mean really it has to.

In your defense, Chad/Chad was a good example, But as much as I like Penny, hes not Rodgers. I think its just one of the things that gives Flynn an edge over being a bust, but not necessarily something that makes him amazing, or automatically good.

Stick with Moore last year in the last 9 games was 15 TD, 6 Ints and went 6-3 in that span... If all else fails Barkley, Wilson & Jones are waiting for you next year and with most teams having aquired that Franchise guy now you can bounce on your very own through the draft,

I don't think you can say that though. Rodgers was very bitter Favre never helped him out, and Rodgers said he would do his best to help the other QB's on the roster be a better player.

I do understand what you're saying, but to think Flynn didn't become a better, smarter QB by working with one of the best in the game would be unwise.

I'm opposite, I believe they will draft Trent Richardson & go with McCoy one more year. If they suck bad, they'll probably be in the race for Barkley. MY only concern is some team trade up before our #8 to swoop Tanny away from us. Unless some tream gets crazy & trades with Cle to get Trent but I don't see that. Trent will either go to Cle or TB, IMHO.

I'd argue that Pennington is a smarter QB than Rodgers. He just doesn't have the physical ability.

I'm not trying to say there is nothing he could have learned from Rodgers, but at the end of the day I don't believe it is anything that will make or break his career. How do we even know if Rodgers taught him anything at all? I doubt his priority going into Sunday each week was to work with Flynn. Flynn had his own things to do with the second team.

We don't but hearsay from rodgers pretty much says thats the kind of person he is and after the whole thing with Favre, I'm be willing to bet he is not that kind of guy that would snub Flynn or any other QB..... and they seem to have a good relationship (Arod and Flynnsanity).

Like I said its 2 different arguments at this point

    1. Your side- Playing with the guy will not tell us the outlook of his future or make him an auto-allstar, I agree.
    2. Was merely stated that it was only beneficial to him to be with Arod and Philbin this long, I believe its a huge positive. No reason not to

Wasn't ever upset. Why not use evidence to shut them up instead of snarky comments?

    For example:

Tom Brady-6th round pick, lock for the HOF
    Joe Montana-3rd round pick, HOF
    Dan Fouts-3rd round pick, HOF
    Warren Moon-UDFA HOF

    Then cite first round busts:

    Ryan Leaf
    JaMarcus Russell
    David Carr
    Joey Harrington
    Akili Smith
    Heath Shuler
    Andre Ware
    Jim Druckenmiller
    Rick Mirer
    Todd Marinovich
    Cade McNown
    Tim Couch

I am sure there are more, which indicates that all the talent evaluation in the world can't successfully predict what will happen.

Might have been classy-er to do that yes, But every time the round 1&2 QB-only trolls show up those draft picks and names are ALWAYS almost immediately posted. They didn't mention that in this particular thread though. (yet)

So I really was only joking. Lol. :tongue2:

I think it is beneficial to be playing with Philbin for sure.

The one thing I could see would be if they challenged each other hard in drills and such. That would be a plus for Flynn because it would have made him push himself harder and improve his technique a lot. That would be a benefit. On the film and mental side of things though there shouldn't be anything Rodgers could teach him that his QB coach and OC (Philbin) didn't. Unless he was simply helping him understand better...in which case it would kind of scare me that he doesn't pick it up on his own.

Anyway like I said I really do hope we bring Flynn in to compete so it's not like I'm trying to say he will suck or anything. I think we both agree though to the main point that Rodgers impact on him in the end isn't what will make or break him. Maybe just slightly help.

Idk. I have a gut feeling that Flynn will have most of us pleasantly surprised if we ink him. And I've never really had that about a QB we've signed except CPen

    ..Or maybe i'm just hungry.

I think there should be something said for bringing in Flynn even for the sake of teaching the offense to the players.

I mean think how much easier it would be to have a QB that knows all the terminology and everything about an offense that will be new to every other player there. It seems like it could seriously speed up the learning process.

Rams just signed Jason Jones to a one year deal, meaning his entire salary will be applied to their cap THIS year... Looks like we can now low-ball Flynn even more

I'd like to sign him to a 5 year deal worth like 15 million guaranteed

That being said are we using Philban's offense system with Sherman calling the plays, or are we just running Sherman's offense with Sherman calling the plays. If it is the later I don't know how big of an advantage it would be. I don't know if I ever remember a OC "learning" a HC's offense and then implementing it. Most likely we will run Sherman's offense, with Philban giving pointers and advice here and there.

One of the comments I liked hearing when talking about Flynn was when he started in place of Rodgers was that nothing was pulled from the playbook. That dispels any notion that a) Flynn wouldn't be able to run the offense like Rodgers and b) Flynn doesn't have the arm strength to get the ball to where it needs to be.

The other day saw a quote from Aaron Rodgers stating whichever team gets Flynn they will be a getting a top 15 QB. Pretty high praise considering he only started two games so far.

I hope Flynn comes in and sets the entire NFL on fire man. Trust me.

Some people don't even want him to compete with Matt Moore though. I do for sure. If he can't beat out Moore he certainly won't be setting anything on fire. May be the best QB win.

My honest opinion, Philbin wants to hitch his wagon to a guy he is familiar with and trusts. The timing for Flynn to hit FA is impecable. It might have nothing to do with Moore. Just that Philbin wants his guy. It could be as simple as that.

I would expect him to say "nothing" if he didn't think it was true. Or perhaps something evasive like, "Hope he does well if given the opportunity to start" or "I think he deserves a chance to start." There are all kinds of things to say to be respectful while not making a declarative statement if you don't think it is true.

Have you read any statements where M. Moore said "Henne will be a top 15 QB?"

    I agree with you.

I do think thought that there won't be a competition, or at least Matt Moore would have to dominate.

If there is a competition I think Matt Flynn would win. Not because he is a much better quarterback. It would be because he is in an offense that is best suited for his strengths.

I don't believe Rogers has anything to do with Flynns development nor does it have anything to do with Flynn playing behind Rogers any more than it had anything to do with Rogers playing behind Favre. I just believe some teams just have better success in developing quarterbacks and Green Bay has been one of them. Whether that translates to Flynn remains to be seen, I really believe they saw potential in Flynn or they would have kept Brian Brohm, a second round pick instead of Matt Flynn as Rogers backup.

I think the only advantage is if their work ethic rubs off on you, or you challenge each other hard in QB drills during practices. On the mental side of things I really believe you either have it or don't. Not to say Flynn doesn't.

Yep. I can't imagine Flynn is being told Miami wants him to come in and compete Moore. I think if Flynn signs his name to a contract it is with the clear understanding that he is the Dolphins starting QB for 2012.

My guess if we sign Flynn, MMoore is the backup, again. While MMoore has more starts, Flynn has the advantage of being a WCO prepared guy already. The keys and reads will be different for MMoore and he'll take time to adjust. Also, I'm not convinced MMoore is accurate enough for Philbin's offense....but that remains to be seen...

Of course he may be the designated starter simply based on his contract...
