Per Schefter: Alex Smith visting with Dolphins today.

    Adam Schefter ‏ @AdamSchefter
I've seen a few people asking for this. And if Smith is taking visits, could that mean Manning to SF is done?

Hmm...interesting. I'm not a fan of Smith's. I can't decide if last year was a fluke or the previous 5 were....

Wow, not sure what to think about this one. Last I read the Dolphins were in contract talks with Flynn. Not sure if Ireland/Ross are trying to call Flynn's bluff, but the longer we wait our risk increases of not landing a QB at all.

I'd be equally fine with Smith or Flynn. Maybe slightly prefer Flynn based on the fact I have a good feel for the ceiling of Smith while the ceiling of Flynn may be a bit higher. In my opinion not much though.

To be fair Smith had a lot to deal with his first few seasons in San Fran and IMO shouldn't have been starting out of the gate. He needed time to adjust to the NFL style of play. It didn't help that half of us probably could have gotten a try out for WR his first few seasons. They were BAD.

I'm fine with either Smith or Flynn if they are not simply handed the job.

I'm not sure if a Manning deal to SF is done, or Smith is just making sure he has a backup plan if it is.

I went to bed certain we'd sign Flynn.

Now I wake up envisioning a scenario where WE LEVERAGE FLYNN and SMITH against one another and lose both when Peyton signs in Tennessee, and I cry.

    I hate Jeff Ireland.

You know that thing about Smith having 7 coordinators/offenses in 7 years?

Looks like he's about to have his 8th.

He's not as accurate as you want for this offense, and he doesn't have a big arm. But he's battle-tested and got better last year. Still, I think he's clearly a fallback option.

As Greg Cosell said, he became efficient last year and really cut out the negative plays. He took 44 sacks -- by far a career-high -- which seems to indicate he just ate the ball rather than trying to force something.

You look and he only threw for over 240 yards four times in the regular season, with no 300-yard games. 17 TDs. But it does say a lot that he played his best, most clutch game in the playoffs against New Orleans.

Wow I feel the same however this really scared me as if Philbin wanted Flynn all along we shouldn't be kicking the Alex smith tires. I think it says one of two thing. 1 that Philbin doesn't think Flynn is ready to be the starter or savior of the franchise. 2 Flynn is asking for some wild numbers and this is a lowball tactic to say hey we got options.

Either way I feel we're missing out on a lot of talented free agents in the process. We need a veteran wr to go with any of our qb choices.

If this regime signs Smith as a guy to compete with Moore as a starter, then I am done....completely done with this franchise.

I don't really see why the hate for Smith.

He should have never started so early for the 49'ers. The style of football he played in college was never going to work in the NFL but it wasn't because he isn't smart or because he doesn't have the physical tools. It is because he played in an Urban Meyer offense. He needed time to sit on the bench and learn the NFL game. However he was thrown to the wolves in so many different respects. His WR's were terrible almost his entire tenure and he needed to learn new terminology every single year because of changes in the San Fran coaching staff. That is not a situation condusive to success.

I'm not saying he is a franchise QB but honestly I have just as much faith in him as I do in Flynn.

We're continuing to explore our options, and so is Smith.

Seems like he's not going back to SF even if Manning doesn't play there. Read yesterday that he's considering changing agents (he's with Tom Condon, who represents Manning).

    Alex Smith??? WtHeck

Alex Smith visiting the Dolphins Sunday Free agent Alex Smith will visit the Dolphins on Sunday.
Free agent Peyton Manning's drawn out decision-making progress is beginning to wreak havoc around the league. Considered a shoo-in to return to the 49ers as recently as two days ago, Smith is doing his best to create leverage in a situation where he previously had none. The Dolphins, meanwhile, are letting free agent Matt Flynn know they have other options if he refuses to accept a "modest" offer. Although Smith is hardly one of the league's elite quarterbacks, it would be a disaster for the 49ers if they swung and missed

I know you will merge this but as I stated the other day and then was crucified.... This Front Office has NO FING clue on what they are trying to do. Either Ireland is a puppet to Carl Petersen or he is on his own and continues to make blunders. Iwish Ross the Billionaire would get off his *** and start over with theis front office. This is by far the most embarressing front office in the NFL.

This is coming from a LIFE LONG FINS FAN that is suddenly ready to hold my head in shame and walk away ROSS.

I wouldn't say Flynn is a franchise QB either. In fact in my opinion there are only maybe five FRANCHISE QB's in the league, followed by great QB's, the above average QB's, and then average QB's and then backups.

Maybe the two people are laughing I'm not on the smith bandwagon At all. I can't help but think this front office is going to screw over the team once again. I honestly get the impression that Ireland's personality causes a lot of problems as he just puts people off somehow as he thinks we're Super Bowl ready

Smith did have crappy receivers his whole tenure, but he always had a running game and one hell of a TE. Here he'll have a crappy receiving core, here for a game gone for 4 Fasano and an above avg. running game. I don't smell success.

I like Smith. He's big, athletic and has a stronger arm than most people give him credit for. He had injuries and lots of bad coaching to start his career. He also plays well late in games.

I would take Alex Smith over Matt Flynn any day. And I dont understand those of you who wouldnt. Matt Flynn has played two games in the NFL. What are you all basing your wants for him on? He's Short, he has a weak arm and has no experience. Smith is tall has a strong arm and has experience and led the 49'ers to the NFC championship last year. He had a really good year last year. I think he finally turned the corner and he is a west coast offense guy. Flynn is exactly what he is. A 7th round selection and career back up. I would be willing to bet that Flynn would have a tough time beating out Matt Moore. If they can get Smith, they should grab him. Flynn is not the answer.

I start to think that Philbin is not sure what he wants or which direction to take and Ireland love to swim in confusion creating more setbacks, but if Philbin really wants Flynn and Ireland for some reason wants to play tough, taking chances of losing Flynn, I would not be surprise if Philbin quits, seems drastic, but possible in light of what transpire since Ireland is the GM.JMO

Matt Moore is better then Alex Smith period. Harbaugh bent over backwards making him a caretaker who barely threw for 3000 yards.

I don't think bringing Alex in is a bad thing. It provides us leverage and options. No ones beating the door down for Matt Flynn so I don't think this will cost us the signing if we decide to go that way. Alex may indeed be a QB that finally gets it and is taking the next step in his QB Play. He was a first rd QB and has starting/playoff experience. I also think he is the kind of guy, based on his interviews, that can lead a team. They are determined to fix the QB position this year and exploring all the options seems diligent to me.

With some here worried about Flynn being paid to much, the team (Ireland) addresses that by adding Smith to the mix to show they won't be held captive; A good move imo. The worried then state they are worried that we will lose out on everybody.

My question is why not look at this as the glass being half full rather than half empty? We get Flynn at our price, is that so bad? You know Flynn doesn't have 4 or 5 teams lining up for his services and with Smith in a likewise boat its a good play IMO.

Wait a second. You really think this is a possibility? Philbin is going to quit if they don't sign Flynn? No offense, but I think there's a better chance that I get signed to play QB next year than there is of that happening.

I think some of you need to take a deep breath. Yes, this off-season has been frustrating so far. The fact of the matter, as far as Flynn goes, is this though. NOBODY is throwing a huge contract at this guy. Rightfully so. Why should we offer him a 6 year $70M deal when nobody else is? My opinion on Flynn is that deep down he wants to play for Philbin, and vice versa. I do believe it will get done, too.

I think bringing in Smith for a visit is smart. If things are moving slowly with Flynn contract-wise, it's smart to show him and his agent that we are prepared to go in a different direction. Leverage. This team has many holes to fill. They can't afford to overpay for a 7th round QB with 2 career starts under his belt, no matter how great he looked in those games.

I see. Yeah, youre right. Why would we want a qb who threw for over 3,000 yards 17 tds and only 5 ints and had a 90 qb rating? Not to mention led his team to a 13-3 record and the nfc championship game after two awesome drives late in the 4th quarter to beat the Saints. He's clearly horrible. Lets get Mat Flynn who has played in two meaningless games at the end of the season.

Smith was a caretaker. He took 44 sacks. FOURTY-FOUR. The 5 INT are just a product of him being instructed by Harbaugh to never take any chances.

My opinion was based to the fact that IF Philbin really wants Flynn and for some reason Jeff takes a different direction, this can create some hostilities, I thought Flynn was looking for 6 to 7 mill per year, which I think is pretty fair, if you really like him and most importantly Philbin wants him.....probably I'm over reacting, since this QB saga is keeping us to be more active in other area of needs.

I can't imagine that Smith would come cheaper than Flynn nor do I think that he'd be better than Moore. But, it's not like the Dolphins can afford to be picky at this stage.
