I've been thinking about this a bit, Manning or Flynn aren't coming here. So now what? The problem I see moving forward is our roster is still basically designed to run the ball, Philbin's offense would seem to require a roster designed to throw the ball first, then work off that, so which way do we go with the rest of the offseason? -Rebuild? Not sure about that as the D is still intact -Start rookies at Wr? -Accept the fact Philbin will not be able to throw the ball as much as he'd like in yr #1? I've made it clear I like Matt Moore's game, to me he is unafraid and that is Quality #1 in finding a playmaking Qb. However his accuracy is not well suited to a WCO style offense as he just does not have good, consistent, ball placement. Some feel we should draft Tannehill, I'm not in that camp as I believe he just is not proven enough to use a Top 10 pick on, what folks have to understand is if we use that pick, we need certain impact, not a developmental type player who may or may not pan out, if he were a better prospect then sure..but just because you feel you need a Qb does not mean he "the" Qb for us. What I think we should do is sign a Garrard, give MMoore a shot to win the job outright, and hope DTrain (or even my boi Messam) can blossom. Which is all fine, but peddling Brandon Marshall also means we are staring at something of a punchless offense, as even when Peyton Hillis was beasting the NFL in 2010, the Browns were still bad..you need Wr's who are actual weapons that score Td's, parachuting a rookie Qb into that situation is not doing him any favors and could ruin his chances to develop.
I hope the Browns draft him at #4 TBH, I just do not like his resume for that high of a draft choice. I'd prefer to see us stay more of a running team until Philbin can bring his players in, if that means signign Garrard and let him and Moore compete..I'm fine with it, the D is clearly our strength as it is.
I agree 100% on the issue of Tannehill.... I'd like it if we managed to get Weeden somehow, I see him as very talented. But even then.. Ehh. We need hands. thats for **** sure.
Well, objectively, if MMoore wins the starting job, it is not the end of the world, he's a good Qb. BUT, taking Marshall out that offense and only adding Hicks, is not going to lead to more Td's, and I don't care who the Qb is. IMO to many people are fixated on the Qb position and have forgotten what it was like without Marshall's diva behind at Wr. So we have 2 problems, perecption at Qb and no #1 Wr.
No Manning or Flynn....I'm good with Matt Moore starting the season. I don't like Garrards game and hope we don't go after him. I think this assures us of drafting a QB, who? Don't really care as long as coach believes in him.
Without Marshall we went 11-5 one year with a less talented team all around. The biggest difference talent wise between then and now? QB. There's an entire draft to get receivers.
I will say this about Tannehill. His receivers dropped a lot of passes. I guess that's not really about Tannehill... I suck!
I examined Garrard's time in Jax and he is more accurate then I'd thought he was, now my caveat is the AFCS typically does not feature great defenses, so I'd have to take look excluding his performances against bad defenses and focusing on his performances vs good defenses, but numbers wise his performance surprised me. And he gives us a better option then overdrafting Tannehill, I'd happily take Weeden though in rd #2 even if we had to trade up to land him, but still the Oline allowed the 3rd most sacks in the NFL unless that is fixed it won't matter who plays Qb in 2012. And Artis Hicks is not the answer to the OL woes imo.
W/Ginn going for 800 yds, his career best season, do not just think drafting a Wr is going to offer more punch to the offense, we really need to add someone.
Exactly, our best WR was Ginn and we went 11-5. I don't see the need to panic about a receiver. We take whatever QB they think can be franchise Weeden/Tannehill at 8. Go crazy with the rest. Secure your QB choice first, because WRs are a dime a dozen. 30 players scored more receiving TDs than Marshall last year. I like our chances of finding a WR in the later rounds, than a QB.
I bet he wishes the defense dropped a few more. In 13 games had 15 picks, only 4 games he didn't throw an interception and three 3 interception games doesn't bode well for being NFL ready his rookie year.
Wrong lesson to take from that Fin-D, as a rookie Ginn went for what..300 yds? And Greg Camarillo also had a career best yr in 08, neither were Rooks. I truly do think we must sign a FA Wr to be competitive in 2012.
Let's be honest here, we are in the Qb dregs of FA atm, in that sense I'd be fine with a Moore v Garrard competition as either can hit the 20 Td benchmark that you must have to be a winning team.
Risky, very risky, which is why I believe you cannot put yourself into that situation. I like Wallace and Marlon Moore just fine, but not enough to gamble a season on their development.
Pads, to me ... not offering Flynn a better contract than what SEA offered is very telling. It's not like he 'cashed in' on that contract. not getting Manning is no surprise on several levels ... if you could go to SF or MIA, which would you choose based on last years results -- pretty simple there. Dude WANTS to win another SB ... since his brother now has '2' ... and SF HAS a good coach and a good young team. We cannot compete with that. Now, if we go with Garrard ... even as a back-up ... THAT is most dissappointing to me. I get the Moore thing, maybe even the 'veteran' back-up as well. But Garrard is not leading this team anywhere. I would rather see what Devlin can bring to the table as a back-up - seriously. Moore did a decent job of 'spreading' the ball around ... so losing Marshall may not hurt as badly as some may think. Look at NEs WRs as an example .... what i think is clear to me is that we'll likely grab one of the 'big' TEs in rd 2 ... to give us Clay, Fasano and another threat in the NE mold. 'IF' we were to trade down and pick up another 2d rd pick ... we could come away with a WR and TE ...
Football is more of a team sport than any of the others. The belittling of the WR position by many of you after we traded Marshall is puzzling to me. Some of you are really trying to convince yourselves that WR's don't seem to matter. You need many pieces to be firing well to be a top team and generally you need some true stars that can take over games and provide that spark to win in close games. Ok so we went 11-5 one year with a poor WR crew. I think you may be forgetting that we had to resort to using the Wildcat formation to salvage any success on the offensive side of the ball that season. We had a weak schedule and caught the league off guard with a gimmick offense for a stretch until the league adjusted to it. This is HARDLY a good argument as to why WR's are not that important. That season is actually a good argument as to why WR's are important. Point is that you need a balanced team with talent in a number of positions to be a winner. Sure we needed to get rid of Marshall because he is a headache however those of you trying to make the argument that his departure dosen't hurt our offenses ability to score points next year are in La-La Land.
Eh, keep in mind where MMoore had the most success was not dinking down the field, it was throwing the ball up and letting Marshall or Hartline go and get it, this is why he is a real loss and one we must replace. As for Garrard, as I said, this team is not really set up to win with a high powered offense, in that sense he fits what best fits our roster IF he beats out Matt Moore, but to my pov either way both can win football games.
I don't think Garrard beats out Matt Moore at all. If we sign him for backup purposes I'm all for it. We clearly need to draft a QB now as well. Be nice if we could use our #1 pick on an impact player and then trade back up into the first for Weeden.
no thanks on garrard..this isn't 5 years ago..he was average at best and i'm with the "if that's the option keep moore" crowd...looks like the "major upgrade" at qb is all but over...good news? barkley is in the draft next year
My statement wasn't made in a vacuum. It was a direct response to someone for something they said. It is silly to read my post without the accompanying quoted post in it, and take it to mean I think the only reason we went 11-5 was not having Marshall. here's what my post was a direct response too: Basically the poster was saying it sucked at WR before Marshall got here. I was pointing out it wasn't as bad as made it out to be.
We need to get Blackmon at 8 somehow then we can trade up for a Weeden as I dont see him going too early. We need a WR and QB in this draft that will be able to start or our season will be going down the ****ter fast.
If we could grab weeden in a later round, say 3rd and grab a WR in the first. Justcant imagine going into next year with Moore and the current WR corps!
When was the last time this team did that? Cam Cameron with Ginn, and before that? Wanny with Chambers?
Flawless logic. We haven't done it in awhile, so we never will. Not too mention, you are trying to win an argument about the how important WRs are by touting Ginn as good.
Strawman argument #3 for today. I'm touting Ginn as good? NO.. YOU ARE. You said that they will just "find" a rookie to get 800 yards at WR or TE no-less. I merely pointed out that they haven't done so.
I think Matt Moore is being written off a little too quickly. At this point he's probably our guy for next season unless the rookie we draft beats him in camp. The guy is not complete crap as some want to believe. He's not exactly Cleo Lemon.
1st Round Pick : Michael Floyd/Alshon Jefferey - Is It Really A Reach Or Are They NFL Ready and can start Day 1? 2nd Round Pick : Nick Foles - We Seem To Forget About Him In All this Free Agency/ Tannehill Talk 3rd A : Pass Rusher 3rd B: TE 4th : Keenan Robinson/George Iloka Its A Copycat League, We might just copy the bengals. I wouldnt be so caught up at the fact that its a "Second Round QB" and hes automatically gonna fail. Would yall be okay with this #ImBACK
Well we did sign him, could be MMoore is not long for the roster. Wr is still a problem, so much so it occurs to me it would not surprise me if we resigned Ted Ginn. -cheap -can return kicks -can get deep
Something being overlooked: so far -#2 in sacks..retired -#1 in tackles..waived -#1 in receptions traded -Langford signed in Stl 3 starters are gone, the designated rusher is gone as well. However, keep in mind that this was a 6-10 team, as Wally Buono once said "no one should feel their job is safe"/\, we went 6-10, there should be changes.
