http://www.palmbeachpost.com/sports...out-qbs-ryan-2267905.html?cxtype=rss_dolphins (" Quote from Carroll") Flynn will compete with Tarvaris Jackson, last year's starter, for the No. 1 job. Jackson last year threw 14 touchdown passes vs. 13 interceptions and compiled a 79.2 passer rating. Matt Moore had 16 TD passes, nine interceptions and an 87.1 rating for Miami last year. The Dolphins' decision to pass on Flynn is widely perceived as a sign Philbin feels Moore will prove to be as good or better this year and beyond. Carroll wondered if the Dolphins may have been victimized by their own overconfidence. Interesting Quote imo "The only speculation I would make is they may have felt like they had him. Which is logical to do," he said. "But once the negotiations got going he said he wanted to come to us. We gave him a really good deal, and for us it worked out really well."
Carroll has to be wondering, like many of us for that matter, why the Dolphins weren't willing to match the offer. I guess we'll see how well it worked out for him in January.
I'm not a huge follower of college ball and I'd never claim to a talent evaluator, but am I in minority in preferring to BPA at 8 and go after Osweiler in the mid-late rounds? Instead of Tannehill at 8, that is.
I'd like to trade back into the first to around like the later teens and take Colby Fleener (TE) and acquire another 2nd or 3rd rounder to spend on a WR. That is unless Blackmon is available. If you want a mid round talent to develop we already have one. Devlin, from watching his tape, is just as talented as any mid rounder this year and does some things EXTREMELY well. He just needs some consistency and I think you have a guy who at the very least is a very good backup.
I wonder if Ireland really wants to be making the Arizona State visit or if he's doing so to downplay our interest in Tannehill. Not taking away from Osweiler, but I'm guessing it's the latter.
ck Kendall Hunter who was heads and shoulder above Daniel Thomas and now it looks like we are fgoing to pass on Weeden to take another lower teired player from the big 12 , I always thought a good front office would take a closer look at the better players not just from Texas A&M the miami area media is even worse. just because we are saddled with a underacheiving coach as MIKE Sherman should not be a precurser togetting a overrated player . I would be happy if we got Blackmon and ot Levey Adecock or Markell Martin even wr Josh Cooper and weeden would be a good combo. sorry guys i am rather sick of seeing the btter players from the big tewlve going to contenders while we continue to get the seth Mckinney s and wade smiths .
I agree..... but I don't think the massive Osweiler is what Philbin has in mind for the ideal QB type to run his system. Good for the Raiders vertical passing game but seems like the complete opposite of what I'd expect for Philbin. IMO the last thing you look at Osweiler as is a WCO style QB that relies on timing, quick twitch throws, and consistency in the short to intermediate passing game b/c the guy's too tall. He can work as hard as he wants but he'll never un-become 6'8. It's like drafting Colt McCoy to QB a vertical passing game.
So what you're saying is you don't like Texas A&M, are biased toward Oklahoma St, and would sacrifice Miami's success if it meant making us Oklahoma State 2.0. We get it. That Von Miller guy has really stunk it up by the way, so at least you have that in your corner. Just sayin.
Interested to see why you believe his height would be a hindrance to the WCO. I only see it as a positive, being able to clearly see and read the defense. Now mobility is another issue but not one really related to height.
"Carroll wonders if his second NFL stint is going to be as bad as his first" "The Friends" of the Seattle Seahawks probably promised Flynn a special signing bonus....
IMO it's b/c of the extra time needed for all that length to consistently set up and properly square up to targets in the short passing game, especially outside of his first progression. All the working parts will have to cover a greater distance than someone 6'2 to 6'4, which will lead to inconsistency IMO. In a vertical passing game, it's not as much of an issue.
Interesting. Depending on athleticism this much could be true as you say. I think if a guy is 6'8 and more athletic than a normal 6'4 guy this isn't really a problem.
IMO athleticism doesn't shorten him. No matter how athletic he is, his feet and just about everything else still has to cover a greater surface area in order to be mechanically sound on shorter throws where time isn't a luxury, especially if it's his 2nd or 3rd progression with the game speed being faster and consistent rhythm being needed. IMO it's similar to why you don't see 6'10 point guards. They could be massively athletic, but their length makes it virtually impossible to perform the quicker twitched duties the position requires to be consistent & successful. ADDED: Watch all of his Boise State snaps and see if you notice it. When I watch him I see as skill set that more says Roethlisberger in Pitt or Flacco in Baltimore than Rodgers in GB. Also, IMO he seems more comfortable throwing downfield where as the short stuff seems a little less natural, more forced. Personally, I'm not a fan of his. His game is sloppy IMO. I don't like 6'07 QB's. and I wouldn't use anything higher than a late 5th on him b/c his contract will likely be up before he's ready to see the field. Genuine congrats on the good first post. Welcome aboard. No need to "resist" when it's in good humor, blacklight...... or can I call you Mr PinkFloyd or Hendrix instead? PS: why do you think I chose 6'10?
nope. I can only assume he wants to run some type of WCO since we did have Flynn and Alex Smith in..... and based on his comments during interviews. I don't think he would mind working with another Aaron Rodgers QB. lol.
This. I just watched this. One game does not make a man, but this a Bowl Game. Good game to judge. Accuracy on anything longer than 20 yards was horrible. His best throws were check downs and swing passes. Looked a like a Giant Henne if you ask me. Mobile for a big guy, but nothing about THIS game was impressive if you ask me. Then again I'm a fan, not a scout. But this would seem like a wasted draft pick if you ask me. Maybe I'll be proven wrong when I watch other game, admittedly I watched tons of Luck, Jones, Barkley and Weeden this year, didn't see any of Osweiler. But that wasn't anything to write home about.
Actually he's 6'7" and extremely athletic. He's by no means "massive". He's actually better with short and intermediate throws. My only concern is his throwing motion. He pushes the ball and does not have the cannon that some scouts claim he has. I'd take him over Weeded or Cousins any day for Philbin's offense.
I'm not an Osweiller fan. I think he's very over rated. I don't see great accuracy or decision-making. He's athletic for a tall guy, but not particularly athletic for say a 6'4" QB. His mechanics are inconsistent. I just don't see anything special about the guy. I don't see him as likely to ever be a franchise QB. In fact, I would say the odds are greater that he never starts an NFL game.
A 22 year old 6'11 Kevin Garnett was more athletic than Osweiler could ever dream of. And no, Osweiler's not "extremely" athletic. He's athletic. Don't throw on a modifier that doesn't belong. If he were extremely athletic, he'd still be playing basketball...... in the NBA. Don't kid yourself. When QBs who reach that height have a rare history of doing anything in the NFL, 6'7 is massive. Yes, when it's determined pre snap or is his first progression and when the receiver is basically stationary. It's not a compliment when the best part of a QB's passing game is hitting a receiver who isn't moving with a short pass. Tell me how he is in short to intermediate passes when the receiver is moving, the play breaks down, he senses pressure, or how he breaks down when his first option isn't open. It's not pretty. I feel like we're not watching the same person..... b/c I see a great many more concerns. When I said I wouldn't use higher than a late 5th on him, that's if we're a team that runs an offense that he fits into. Personally, I wouldn't draft him at all in Miami. ....and when NFL defenses force him to hit a moving target while we're operating a timing offense? What then? He has a big enough uphill battle to make it in the NFL; drafting him to QB Philbin's offense would destroy any NFL hopes he has. If he's not drafted by a team like Philly, Pitt, or Oakland, he's doomed. How you look at his sloppy accuracy & long developing delivery (from footwork to release) and see a QB suited for a spread offense based on timing and rhythm where he has to be capable of going through multiple progressions in a short time and make quick accurate throws isn't understandable to me. Cousins would have him for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And please don't tell me "well, he's athletic" b/c I'll just tell you to get out a stop watch and clock how long it takes him to get set and throw... and then re-set in order to throw again.
I think, despite 2 first rounders, the Browns are going to lose a guy they covet highly b/c they likely won't want to take him at 4, and he'll be gone by us at 8. IMO we're in the perfect spot at 8 b/c it already represents a slight reach; therefore, I honestly don't see teams pulling the trigger on draft day to trade up any higher than 8 b/c that would make the reach a little extreme IMO. If we were at 10, I could see a team moving up to 9, but I really don't see anyone trading up to 7, especially when the cost would have to be high enough for Jax to forego one of the top tier remaining 5 players.
I could see the Browns taking him. They are known for not taking WRs in round one so that eliminates Blackmon, they have a decent secondary so I don't know if they would want to further strengthen their defense when it is already stout. I think the biggest thing for them is how "elite" Trent Richardson is. I think for the Browns it's going to come down to either Richardson or Tannehill. I think more than likely, it will be Tannehill, but they are playing coy to not get jumped in the draft.
That was one time in all his years in the NFL and he got burned on that pick. I don't know if he does it again.
If we taget Weeden in the second who is going to chose and grab him before us?? Not many would be looking for a QB period if CLE takes Tanny.
I agree with you in regards to Osweiler. I don't see him as a potential long term starter in the NFL. Of course I also feel the same in regards to Tannehill and that is why I don't want the Dolphins to waste a first or second round pick on Tannehill. To me Tannehill will just be another Henne. He will never be an effective starter in the NFL and he will be signed as a free agent backup by another NFL team once his contract is over with the Dolphins.
IMO there's a better chance the Browns do some more draft day trading and maneuvering to stock pile picks like last year, and then trade up their 2nd for Weeden rather than overdrafting Tannehill at 4. I'm highly inclined to say this b/c they're likely riding the high of their 2011 draft success and are likely feeling confident about their ability to pull off another coup. If they had a bad 2011 draft, I think they'd be more prone to overdrafting Tannehill this year. Mark it down.
