According to Ben Volin on Twitter, Johnson, who played mainly special teams the last two years in Minnesota visited with Miami today. For those unfamiliar, he should be considered an in-the-box type safety in the mold of Yeremiah Bell. Hes had some good years in the past but you cannot ask him to cover on a regular basis but he has in the past been a sure tackler and solid vs the run. In 08 and 09 his pass metrics werent that bad, truthfully I have no idea why Minnesota basically gave up on a player they took in the second round in 08. But he was a player I liked then and I still think there is untapped upside there. It would be a good signing and should come at a reasonable pricetag.
Yeah and they also gave up 2 picks to move up to get him, seems like a good depth pick-up, but he doesn't provide that pressure ability that Bell brought throughout his time here. But maybe he makes up for it with some better coverage skills.
His coverage skills might be a drop better then Bell's. But he still has a lot of work to do to get his overall game up to speed on where it should be to start. A 1 year/prove it deal between 700K-1M is about where he should be.
Given the amount of successful rehabilitation projects that the Bengals have had recently, there's a pretty good reason for interest in him. The Bengals were very confident in their ability to take misfits and has-beens and make them work, and if Coyle is responsible then you're in good shape.
