I do not agree with that when it comes to back ups. The more flexable the better.

Per Stats Incognito had 5 holding calls and gave up 1.5 sacks in 2011. IMO, not bad playing alongside an injured Jake and a rookie in POuncey who himself had 4 holding calls which is bull because for some reason Pouncey was not charged for a lot of stuff he missed on. They had him for 3 sacks but as a rook, he gave up more then that. If anyone does not realize the situation of the Oline in 2011 then they need to really look into it.

Long, did not practice all summer or spring, first game of contact was first game of season. First 7 games played far below his ability. Then was good for 4-5 games and got injured.

Incognito. Played all games except last game of the season, not sure, think he twisted a leg ?
Pouncey, good, yes, but still a rookie. was not all world but tons better then Berger
Carey, punched his ticket when they asked him to take a pay cut. Played MAYBE 3 decent games last year, could not move to save his life
Columbo, not even going into that. I expect he was signed as a backup but when Murtha went down, so did the right side of our offensive line.

Jerry, played sparingly during season but have to admit, did decent a few games at LT when needed.

The Oline was non existent on the right side, Carey and Columbo. A rookie at center and an injured LT that did not have a full practice since the end of the 2010 season then stepped on the field again 9 months later ? It was a mess folks.

That makes no sense. Jake is under contract for 2012. Why would whether or not he signs an extension effect Martin playing RT this year?

I'd say what he meant was all past injuries he is now totally recovered from, and he is working out with no restrictions. I see no reason to believe any differently.

I can buy that explanation but assuredly he has a long way to go. No pun intended. Honestly believe the team wants to see what he can do again. Actual OTAs/minicamp has not started yet and there is still some good FA out there at most positions. With the new rookie wage scale I believe the FA and their clients are starting to realize they most likely are going to have to accept what teams think are good offers if they wish to continue playing the game. I have not given up hope on a good WR and or Jake Scott yet.

Incognito had 9 total penalties, 2 of which were declined.
He had 2 vs NE in week 1
He had 1 vs Wash in week 10
He had 2 vs Oak in week 13
He had 1 declined vs Philly in week 14
He had 2 with 1 declined @ Buff in week 15
He had 1 @ NE in week 16

That is all penalties combined. Holds, False Starts, whatever.

I don't know, the more I watch Martin, the more I understand why Padre started the thread...remember, this guy is 6'4 about 310, he sure is built like a guard, moves like one too..Iam gonna keep watching Andrew Luck games, I didn't study him this draft because I didn't think he would be on our team..

Well this could just be another example of Philbin and Ireland not quite being on the same page but I think the reason this speculation even begins is because Philbin said that right now they haven't even gotten to the point of making the decision and having the discussions about right side or left side, and naturally people know he's not going to compete with Jake Long for the left tackle job so you'd think he meant right tackle or left guard.

But Jeff Ireland came back on in his next day press conference and said there was an article speculating something about Jake Long and he just wants to say he has every intention of bringing Jake back and keeping him a Dolphin for a long time, that Jon Martin is here as a RIGHT TACKLE and that is where he'll play. I mean, it was unusually frank for him, he came right out and said right tackle, that's why he's here and that's where he'll play. I immediately thought of this thread and thought, well there goes that debate, lol.

I think i would prefer Martin at RT. I could be off base but isnt it a harder position to fill both from a cost perspective and then just available talent? I would think RG is an easier position to fill. Having Martin develop and succeed at RT gives us bookends to go with our center for many years to come.

One quick question, would Martin's lack of strength be a detriment at guard? I tend to think of guards as the maulers. Maybe in Sherman's system we want more nimble linemen.

I thought Philbin was saying they were going to begin with Martin practicing as Long's back-up at LT. I think the plan was to minimize how much new stuff they throw at him. Assuming he gets stuff quickly, I expect they'll have him as the swing T early in camp with the hope that he can progress quickly enough to lock down the RT spot.

And I agree that he's not built like a G. He has a nice punch and he moves well, but he has long arms and lacks power in there.

Ireland already said in an interview Martin will be a RT so no reason to discuss him being any type of guard. He said that the day he came out on the air to counter the article that mentioned Long could be on his way out. End of discussion there folks on Martin being a guard.

One benefit of Martin at Right Tackle is it affords some people that I think should be moving to guard, to actually go ahead and do that. I never liked Artis Hicks as a tackle signing but as a guard signing, I can deal with that. Lydon Murtha may move inside and I like him better there than outside.

Getting a young guy and a player back from the medics really make all the difference. We should have a very improved line. And next year even better with another years experience.

I know this debate is over and that he's gonna be put at right tackle, but I do understand why Padre got this premonition, he's not super tall, he is built in a stout compact way, I do believe that his movements skills were overrated leading up to the draft, I don't see the great athleticism that some were saying, and the feet and overall quickness is not as quick as I would like..

I certainly have been critical of Ireland , however I completely feel we need to believe him when he says something now. This is one more example of that. Very enthused with the change in being fan/media friendly and feel this draft has a chance to make real headway to becoming a consistent playoff team/

I think Ross is the one forcing them to be more media friendly and only for the fact that the dude knows how to be a bussiness man. Pure speculation I admit but I credit Ross.

While they are not the end all be all, his shuttle and cone times at his Pro Day would indicate quick feet. His 7.69 cone would have been top third for tackles at the combine and his 4.68 shuttle would have been top 25% of tackles.

Also, his 30" vertical would have been 2nd and his 8'08" broad jump tied for 3rd.

That may well be and if so and we are both better for it and fans have a better feel for the organization , then it is a positive. We all can learn and maybe Ireland can now learn from Ross as opposed to Fat Bill. I love that he has been front and present , talked openly about the draft and LOVED that he went out on a limb and said " if our board was right , we really nailed it " ...

I used to say Sparano either had an epiphany or was told he had one , I hope Ireland has had one , and I have been critical of him , but I am very enthused with this draft.

Not to stir any feathers here but how do you honestly post on here about Lydon Murtha becoming a guard.? Seriously, I know many respect you but this thought of Murtha is completely insane, completely from left field. Save this post. Murtha, if lucky, will be on the game day roster................ as a tackle, In no shape way or form could Lydon Murtha even be the least bit competant at the guard position so drop that thought and like I said, outside of needing a guy to jump in there at practice on the 3s due to injury, no way Lydon Murtha ever plays guard, never. Not on this team or any NFL team and yes, I am positive of that.

You know what guards are? Guys not athletic enough to play tackle ;p But yah I don't see Murtha at Guard either purely because I think he's too tall for it. DT's will get leverage under him all the time.

I'am trying to understand the original posters point of view..and what I see is not an elite tackle prospect...maybe you should remember where the prospect got drafted..For me, it sounds about right for what I see.

I try to know what I'am talking about..are you still confused as to why I would of traded up for RG, and you just can't understand someone having Tannehill as the Fourth Qb on the board, and that 8 was to high for me with Weeden on the board.?

You seemed confused in the other thread when you expressed that no one understood your POV?, it was easy to understand btw, just did'nt agree with it.

Yes. To be exact (From multiple sources): 6'5 3/8, 34 inch arms and an 82 1/8 inch wing span (6'8). He's clearly tackle size. And, he's best suited as a RT. That, and he's pretty clearly the most talented RT on the team right now.

Back on topic. It makes no sense to move Martin to guard. Tackle is his natural position and we need a decent RT badly. I'm surprised we haven't talked more about moving Pouncy to guard. Too bad we couldn't draft Konz.

There are some tall guards, like Kevin Gogan was, 6'7, or Kevin Donnalley, 6'5, but I agree generally they are 6'4 max. I think the key thing that kicks some college tackles inside in the pros is arm length. Example this year for me is Ryan Miller. He was a tall short armed zone blocking tackle in college, but more than any other characteristic his short arms will force him inside in the pros, IMO.

I know nobody is perfect but I can't make out a single thought from your post. English is obviously not your primary language but I'm going to take a shot at trying to explain to you why what you said was stupid.

First, you state that the player in question was short for a tackle. 6'5" is tall or above average for any position on a football field. This isn't the NBA. Then you continue to make more baseless claims about Martins foot speed. While I'm not as drill dependent as some people the numbers would seem to indicate that you are wrong yet again. The only knock on him is he needs to gain some strenght and he has trouble staying low in his pass blocking/back pedal. Nobody said he was an "elite" prospect but many teams had him graded in the first round. The orginal post is right up there in stupidity (no offense) as the article about this draft pick meaning the end of jake long in miami so I can see where you'd have trouble trying to defend it as you basically just had to make up "facts" to fit what you were trying to say. No hard feelings, you're just obviously wrong and using false facts for your argument.

It would make much more sense to move Pouncey to guard than it would Martin, that is for sure. Just having he and Incognito change positions could be an overall improvement. That idea has been broached by a few guys here in the past. I'd like to see Pouncey at guard personally, because I think he is a poor shotgun snapper, and accurate snaps are the most basic and necessary thing you want from your center.
