http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports_football_dolphins/2012/05/what-are-we-learning-about-these-miami-dolphins.html Guys, it looks like players are struggling to keep up in this fast offense. What do you think about it?
Man oh man, this is why I don't follow Omar on twitter or read his articles...First line alone "Reggie Bush is one of the best conditioned athletes in the world"
That was a good article..Break'em down and build'em up. I've heard a few more direct quotes from players about not being in shape last year, I hope we got rid of Sparano strength and conditioning staff.
I can see our guys being too gassed as the season moves forward if they keep up this tempo. I don't think the coach keeps this up. probably just during OTA's.
He overdramatizes everything. Im sure Reggie Bush is in great shape, but nowhere near "one of the best conditioned athletes in the world"
I agree with you there. I think we will be in the best shape and the most conditioned in quite a long time.
You make a good point there. I would love to see it the opposite, hardly ever getting tired...always going full speed. That probably won't happen though.
I like the sound of that. Possibly Coach of the Year (I know too early but I can't help thinking about it.)
New strength coaches were hired by the team before the lockout last year, but with the lockout they were not able to work with the team in the off season conditioning program. Philbin retained both of them and I think that was a good idea.
Ask that of anyone who played for Don Shula if tough practices hurt your team down the road...I don't think the pace of practice or the difficulty will do anything but have us better conditioned come Sept. Besides that, as a team they are learning a whole new offense they need to be pushed to get up to speed on the nuances of the offense...with the new rules, they have to move things along at a brisker pace to get as much work done and get them ready for the next phase...TC...
Good point! The new rules limit hitting/pads on consecutive days. They also limit length and frequency. Personally, I can say that shorter, more intense workouts with more rest have just about eliminated my injuries. You'll always have potential injuries when there's contact, but with more rest even those recoveries are better. I like Philbin's approach and see no downside to it.
I agree wholeheartedly with you. This can only make them better not more worse. I am looking forward to see how this pans out.
Or, it could be that with this extra work, your body adapts and becomes more resilient to their surroundings - giving them an advantage over teams that come down here. It used to be that way, and the more work we do in the heat, the better. Obviously it must be done in an educated manner, but giving the body extra stress makes the body adapt.
Seems to me the point people are missing here, is we will be playing this way likely all season, at least quite often in games. Nothing wrong with it leaving the players "gassed" during the first OTA. By season start, they will be in shape to play entire games this way if Philbin has any say over it and as HC he should. It is a regular tool for Brady and the Patsys, why not here? I like Matt Moore a lot, but still expect Garrard to be our starter come September. I really want Tannehill to carry a clip board for his first NFL season. I am hoping both Garrard and Moore develop nicely in this fast paced WCO and become excellent/valuable trade bait when another team loses their starting QB in the first half of the season. We could possibly net 2 high draft picks which would be worth giving either one of them up. One needs to stay as backup to Tannehill when he's ready to take over this offense next year.
Amen ..... The more you sweat the less you bleed! Practice the way you'll play and you'll play the way you practiced!
When all is said and done, it doesn't matter how fast they run the offense. All that matters is whether or not the Dolphins have the talent to compete against the better teams in the NFL and right now I just don't see them having the overall talent on the roster. The Dolphins are at least two to three years away from being a legitimate playoff contender. The one important item I got from this article was that Garrard appears to be the QB on the team right now who seems best suited for the WCO. I have felt this way all along and if Tannehill is going to be the backup QB this season, I feel that Moore's time with the Dolphins will soon be at an end. The Dolphins may be able to trade him for a 7th round pick or if not, I see them cutting him and avoiding having to pay his two and a half million dollar contract for next season.
The one and only thing that matters is execution. You can run plays as fast as you want, and if what you do is get to three and out quicker, that's no help. I hope they're stressing the fundamentals, technique and timing.
When I was at Oklahoma, you'd better believe we practiced in some serious heat. Yeah we split the sessions up so as not to be out there at 1pm, but I can tell you there isn't a whole hell of a lot of diference between 1pm an 3:30 pm in that heat. There's not much of a difference between 108 and 102 in my book - its too damn hot. If anything its actually worse due to the angle the sun now hits the Earth at later in the afternoon. But I digress. The point being the heat was exhausting, but you do adjust to it, and by god the first few teams we played in Norman typically faded in the second half. Well, actually they melted, but you get the idea.
I have to believe that all of what is being presented in every practice and meeting, that attention to detail is king especially when it comes to execution and timing. I personally believe this team is much better than what some may believe.
If this staff can not only implement a cutting edge strength and conditioning program but get the players educated on its importance to their performance, our team will have a collectively huge advantage... players out of shape, and not properly educated about nutrition and training, is an epidemic in the NFl, millions of dollars is being wasted.
Well they better learn to do something with the 3s then. I am hearing the 3rd units on offense do nothing, absolutely nothing but stand on the sideline and watch the world go by. Everybody needs reps and regardless of what all the Hercules type people here think, practicing in this heat and humidity does nothing more then wear people down. Its humid as hell all over the country. No, I do not care what Shula did. Stadium is going to be void of people for all those longed after 1 oclock games. I am not going to sit there and melt the first part of the season, do not care if they are a Superbowl team. I dare anyone to find any physical benefit from pushing people hard in extreme heat and humidity. Tony tried it last year, the entire team looked like they were beat before the first quarter ended. He pulled back and amazing, we started winning games. Can't wait until one of the Hard Knocks camera crews or other member of their party falls on the ground and passes out at one of our Aug. Practices.
Why not? Don Shula always had his teams better prepared for hot/humid weather, and they won many a game for it. If you're going to beat a team that may have better talent, or more experience, you had better have our team in better physical conditioning than the opponents.
