Listening to serius radio and Solomon Wilcotts was on, said he spent 3 days at our mandatory camp, and after watching and seeing the franchise operate, he came away impressed with many things.. Said, David Garrad looked "great" Said, Matt Moore looked "better" Said, Ryan Tannehill looked as good as both.. Said that the pace of dolphins practice is something to behold, he says that the situations and tempo there going thru is mentally exhausting and complex, he says it's great for the minds of the Qb's and should benefit them for the actual games..He was really talking with a sense of shock when he was describing things, and really had more superlatives then what I have mentioned when it came to how the Qb's were handling it, how great of a preparation tool he thinks it could be for when the regular season starts, and how good Ryan Tannehill looked. He said that to his eye, he couldn't tell that there was a discernible difference in the competition... Man it sounds like our rook is holding his own, that's exciting.. He also said that he doesn't see the extra gear in Chad.. I didn't think the kid had a chance, but maybe when the preseason starts he will just take over, should be a fun competition to evaluate.
I don't understand the accusations of bias that get thrown around. Did Ryan Tannehill once steal Omar Kelly's girlfriend? Ok, if THAT is the case, then you worry about bias. Did Matt Moore marry Ben Volin's sister? Ok, if THAT is the case, you expect some bias. Otherwise, WTF people? It's called an opinion. Solomon Wilcots is not offering an "unbiased" opinion. He's offering up just another opinion. Should be a hell of a lot more concerned with the credentials of the person offering the opinion than on the "bias" of the opinion. I take it there are quite a few that still have concerns with the opinions of the local media on that basis. But at least it's a heck of a lot more relevant than the issue of "bias"...which is a concept that far too few around here seem to truly understand.
probably a poor choice of words on my part, I just meant an outside source, I didn't mean to indite anyone's opinion on being biased from a local media perspective, when I said non bias, I really meant no connection to our franchise, just a fresh set of eyes.
Yeah I think it's a little different hearing an analysis from a guy like Solomon over someone like Omar who IMO doesn't know sh!t. It's good to get a perspective from an outside source but he covers a lot of our games so I think he can make some accurate comparisons. Good to hear nonetheless.
I know there's something appealing about this, I recognize that appeal...but I don't share in it. These "fresh" sets of eyes cycle in and then cycle out so quickly, how can they see anything? What did Solomon Wilcots watch, one practice? And was he even able to see the entire practice, at that? Consider how even Omar, considering his own very high opinion of himself, had to admit that the pace of the practices were too fast for him to catch everything, to the point where he decided to split the field with Izzy Gould so they could see everything. So Solomon Wilcots is out there, a "fresh" set of eyes, which really means he doesn't know half the players he's seeing and has to keep looking up their jersey numbers, which probably keeps him from getting even that much more of what he's seeing, sees a dozen plays of each QB, catches maybe half of what's going on, retains even less than that, and comes away essentially not being able to tell anyone which QB is better than which. Does that speak highly to what Solomon was seeing out there? Or perhaps is it the opposite, he can't tell you which QB looked better because he didn't really see much and retained even less? I don't think there's anything wrong with having followed the situation for a while and having formed an unbiased opinion which in turn forms expectations about what you're going to see in the future. There's a reason human nature is the way it is. Those expectations help you to be more accurate in what you're seeing, not less accurate. If your opinion is that this guy has not been showing much out there, then you're going to notice when something changes and he does start showing things. You're going to be able to appreciate that. It'll stand out to you.
They just had a discussion about this on NFL 32. Mort said Matt Moore is a bad practice player and that could really affect the entire competition. Philbin may have to grade Moore on a curve. Omar Kelly was brought on and he said that the Dolphins would like for Moore to win the competition but everything is up in the air.
I like both myself. I like fresh eyes and eyes who have been watching the team. I don't like Omar's eyes because I think he is terrible at his job.
Are you really that bent out of shape over this? Sheesh.... I totally agree on "unbiased" or "fresh set of eyes". I want a fresh opinion once in a while. Thank You DJ.
I see what you did there. If theres any reporter out there that might be a dolphins fan, its solomon wilcotts. So the un-bias jab thing may not even apply here either. Still it seems he did come away impressed with RT17, the pace of practices, etc. Perhaps unimpressed with Ocho.
I respect that, and I get where your coming from, here's what my thought process was, all I've heard about practice is from reporters who aren't evaluators of talent, who have been limited in their access, just thought it was a bit exciting to hear that he was there for a couple days and came away with a different take in what we've been hearing, which is Tannehill is not in the race, and that he's not handling the tempo very well..Maybe our media guys who were on that limited access, can't see and determine what is proper progression of a rookie relative to the regular season start.?.. I don't rely on either perspective to formulate my opinion, but I do like to get myself hyped up when I hear things that go against what I've been hearing, and what I personally believe, it kind of builds up my anticipation, evens things out..probably doesn't make much sense, but that's what I do..
The most interesting part of that post IMO was the comments about the pace of practice. That is something that a player should be able to identify pretty accurately. Wilcots played for three teams in his career, so he would have seen a few different practice types. If he is raving about the pace then it probably is something different than "just talk".
Yea, he is better. I do not think he is good though. He isn't nearly as good as Joe Schad. Miss that guy.
You can't evaluate jack in minicamp! Biased or not, unless there's some hitting going on, its all academic.
bias or no bias, I think we have an excellent QB stable... maybe the deepest in the NFL today personally, I would like one of our veterans to start the season & begin to work Tannehill in gradually toward the end of the year having said that, may the best QB start & if he winning games let him play out the season
just to clarify, Like I tried to explain in my post, his voice inflection of what he was seeing was almost that of shock, he acted as if he had not seen this tempo and pace before, it was like we were doing something completely original, and that our rookie was in his opinion, handling the business as well as the other two, for which he said both looked excellent, so while I know he isn't a talent evaluator, he is an outside source who played the game, and has no real reason to dig or glorify, who saw with his own eyes, and absolutely when up against the perception, especially to Pat Kirwan, who hasn't seen anything in person, and who has been nothing but insulting about our team..He was literally checking him on the air, saying wait a minute, there's something going on down there that "may be surprising to most", (and that was his quote), he had the same enthusiasm in his voice when he talked about the rookie and how sharp he looked.. I do think it went against what has been reported, so I thought that was interesting, but, my mistake was accusing, unintentionally,of bias reporting by our own media guys.
I'd be suprised if the local media didn't have bias. They deal with the team on a daily basis. They form relationships, good and bad, with the players. With the amount of interaction that they have, how could they not? The key is how good is the reporter at stopping it from coloring his perception. Sent from my SGH-T959V using Tapatalk 2
Strictly my ,02, to this point it sounds like THill/Martin/Egnew/rook Wr's are suffering with the learning curve. Miller and Vernon are not..that could be due to mini camp favoring either vets, or those who are just doing things that cater to their physical abilities. THill stayed in town at least.
