Per PFT Schefter as well. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/07/28/source-dolphins-get-ryan-tannehill-under-contract/
He missed 2 days of camp, it will take years for him to come up to speed. OMG, what will we do, maybe we can draft that kid from USC.....lol
Schefter says Tannehill was unwilling to keep missing more camp over the offset language issue, but the Dolphins made concessions in order to make it more palatable. I'm wondering what those concessions are. If they amount to about half a mil worth of direct or indirect benefits then I'd say this was the Dolphins caving on the offset language issue while still saving face. It's the dilemma that Muck described. Now that Tannehill has missed time, if the Dolphins just suddenly dropped the offset language issue they'd lose a heavy amount of face, look incompetent. The best way to go about things would therefore be to make concessions that make the offset issue moot.
@AdamSchefter: Dolphins made concessions to make deal palatable, but Ryan Tannehill was unwilling to miss more time to continue fight on offset language.
So, it sounds like a compromise? Either way, this is great news. Welcome aboard, Mr. Tannehill. Now get to work and brighten our future!
They had to get this done. The team was looking foolish (again). It's ridiculous that he missed even one day, but it could have been a lot worse.
True, I don't think anything makes me more mad then a drive continuing after a bullsh!t 3rd down "roughing the passer" call because he pushed him after he threw it. Like the one called on YB last year which almost resulted in a TD against the jets.
Kudos to the Dolphins for finding the right solution out of the mess they backed themselves into. As Muck had already described, by letting this get to the point where Tannehill missed four practices (two full practices, two walk throughs) they backed themselves into a corner. If they had suddenly dropped the demand for offsets then they look weak/incompetent and it hurts their negotiating position in future contract dealings. Therefore, the only way for the Dolphins to grease things back into action would be to make concessions that probably nullify the value of the offset language.
He's probably suffered irreparable harm from this traumatizing experience, so will end up flopping at QB, get moved to WR and we draft Matt Barkley from the University of Spoiled Children next year.
T-hill basically missed watching or participating in about 400 reps. Going forward, the team will continue their cycle through the playbook. It's impossible for us to know how many of the plays they went over in those first four hundred will be revisited soon or whether they're plays he picks up quickly or not once they do. Generally, playbooks build on the foundations they set down early. T-hill missed part of that foundation. That certainly doesn't help, but hopefully he's instinctive enough to figure it out and/or can put in some extra time to watch film of those concepts. It's not something that's permanently crippling, but there's no need to pretend that it wasn't a negative. It's a set-back and he's going to have to do more work using less effective means to try and get that back.
Exactly it. I think that once the other teams caved and Miami was the last one left on the dance floor, they had an "oh ****" moment. Jeff Ireland doesn't simply give in, so I think they just waited out Ryan's camp for another day or so with the idea that one side (didn't matter who) would ultimately extend an olive branch leading to a compromise. We've seen enough from Jeff to know that this was how it would end. It reads like Tannehill ultimately nudged the deal forward. No doubt being away was gnawing at him. - sent from my Android using Tapatalk 2 -
Since it's basically the same system he's played in at TAMU, I'd guess he is less behind than if it were otherwise.
Hopefully, but "less behind" is still behind. It was a set-back for him and the team. The only question is how much. The posts pretending that it was permanently damaging and those that that pretend it was noting are both wrong.
Well said. To the extent that I was upset about this, it was based on: 1. Simply put, it makes the Dolphins look bad. The term "mountain out of a molehill" should have nothing to do with fan reaction to the holdout and should instead be affixed onto the issue that kept both sides from signing this deal weeks ago. The offset issue is a ridiculous basis for a contract impasse that causes a rookie quarterback whom you hoped to be competing for the start, to miss training camp time. It is positively lunatic. I don't like the Dolphins looking bad and this made the Dolphins look bad. Even worse than merely how the team looks to the outside public, I don't like the Dolphins doing stupid things because it doesn't give me hope that they're going to avoid doing stupid things in the future, and this was a stupid thing. 2. As I just said, this guy's supposed to compete for the starting job! Everyone just assumes he's out of the competition altogether. I can't take these violent swings, it's ridiculous. First it was assumed Matt Moore or Ryan Tannehill would start and David Garrard is an afterthought. Now based on a few local beat writer reports it's almost like this mass assumption David Garrard is the guy (this is my current assumption as well but I based it on the game tape of Garrard in 2010 and Moore's tape in 2011). It's gone from Ryan Tannehill as probably the starter (Reggie Bush) to Ryan Tannehill trailing the pack, to you know what we shouldn't even really let Ryan Tannehill compete for this job. Ridiculous. He should compete and he should be expected to put up a good showing. To that end, missing the first four practices of training camp is a pretty big disadvantage when you consider that the coaching staff is going start steering toward their decided starter within about two weeks of the start of camp.
i still dont think its that big of a deal that he missed two days, bigger news is that jeff ireland can now turn his full attention to getting mike wallace in a dolphins jersey
I agree, missing 2 days is really no big deal. The QB coach will just have to put in a couple more hours to go over what Tanny missed. Not a big deal. Plus, he'll get the same number of snaps in the first game as he would have if he showed up Friday.
As a chineese philosopher once said .Its better to save face than to lose face . Both sides were finding that their high profile stance was counterproductive to both their goals so they met in between. There could be no winners or losers if a longstanding relationship was at risk. Lets play ball and get on with the season.
I don't really think that's much of an issue, since at this point he probably knows the offense better and is more comfortable in it than most of the players. Ryan's main issue isn't learning the plays or the offense. It's learning what he is looking at across the line of scrimmage, quickly recognizing it, and making proper adjustments. Thats where the reps will come into play for him...
