Finally made it out to camp. Had every intention of going yesterday as well, but unfortunately I fell into the trap DJ was concerned about. Got dragged out untill 2:30am at the Hard Rock Friday night, lol. I'm sorry I was weak and let you guys down, lol.

However, it worked out nice b/c the first practice I got to go to was also Ryan Tannehill's first practice! (he got a nice little ovation coming onto the field) He wasnt wearing pads today like the rest of the team, but it didnt stop him from taking reps. He participated in every drill and got plenty of work. It was great to get to see him and some of the other rookies as well. Speaking of seeing people, I also saw Drew Rosenhaus which was pretty cool. He walked right past me and sat one section over.

OK, enough of that... lets get into it!

Practice started off with 7v7's... with the 1st/2nd team on the left half of the close field, and 3rd/4th team on the right side of the close field. They were very accomidating today in terms of doing most of the work on the close field... which was GREAT b/c the practices on the far field suck to go to).

The starting WRs were CJohnson and Naanee, and the first play of the day was a diving catch down the right sideline by CJ for about 25+ yards. He looked pretty good. I honestly wasnt keeping too close of an eye on him, as I was like a kid in a candy store trying to watch everything at once... but he looked pretty good and seemed to catch all of the passes thrown his way. There was one play were we ran a reverse to him... and it got completely blown up in the backfield with a nice read and reaction by Reshad Jones. On the right side of the field, Tannehill was spilting reps with Devlin and Tanny made some nice throws... including one real nice corner route along the left sideline to Jeron Mastrud for around 25 yards. He led him perfectly and squeezed it in right before the sideline. Back to the left side of the field, both Moore and Garrard had back to back nice passes. Moore dropped one in over a defender near the sideline on an out route to Bess, and garrard followed it with a nice comeback to Bess with very good timing.

They then split into groups and did some technique/fundimental drills. They did a good number of these today early on in practice. It was at this point when I started trying to find some of the new guys to get a feel for how they looked, both in size and fluidity. First person I wanted to see was Jerome Messam. He is no Brandon Jacobs, but he is still a big boy. Hes built like a RB not like a FB, in that his body looks lean even though he's 250lbs, and he moves/cuts/etc like a RB, not a bumbling FB. I dont know if he'll be anything, but hes got some real nice athletic ability and is a very fluid athlete for his size. Another guy that I wasnt even looking for but caught my eye was this #50. Looked him up and its Olivier Vernon, our rookie 3rd round DE. This dude is a BIG boy. Not fat, more like big boned (insert South Park joke here). He was just thick and swoll. Really intreagued about him this season now that I've seen this kid in person. He also flashed some explosiveness a few times as well today as well which I'll touch on later. Our other 3rd rounder, Egnew, also has some nice size and fluidity to him. Didnt get as much vertical work as I was hoping to see (may have missed some though), as he seemed to be used on more short/intermediate routes (drags/outs/digs/curls) from the plays I saw. However, Clay seemed to get a lot of vertical work in the seams today.

After I think some quick 7v7's, they went into 1v1 drills in the front left side of the field with Tanny and Devlin taking turns doing the passing. Heres kinda a rapid fire from my notes on these matchups:

    - One of the first plays, Reggie Bush put an absolutely dirty move on Burrnett with some stutter cuts and completely shook him in a breaking ankles kinda moment.
    - Next play Misi lined up on Mastrud and did a great job in coverage.
    - Messum caught a nice out and up along the left side and showed some really nice speed here on the play.
    - Speaking of nice speed... the next play Lamar Miller roasted Austin Splitler on a deep wheel route along the left sideline
    - Culver picks off Devlin on a poor pass behind the WR.
    - Egnew runs a nice stutter and go on Kaddu and Tannehill led him nicely
    - Tanny with a perfect pass on a 20+ yard corner route along the right sideline to Les Brown on Tyrell Johnson
    - A LB (didnt catch the number) came up to Messum after the snap to jam him, and Messum smashed the guy hard knocking the LB back, and made an out cut towards the left sideline for the reception.
    - Clay connecting on that 20+ seam/post route that caught a bunch of today.
    - Tannehill with a couple of back to back throws to Les Brown on that corner sideline route again (As you can see, he made a bunch of these particular throws today... he likes that route man)... and then a throw into a real tight windown to Mastrud on a 15 yard pass in the seam just over the LB.
    - Daniel Thomas with a nice reception on a deep wheel down the left sideline
    - Egnew with a nice 10 yard out route against Tyrone Culver. Tannehill had good placement here.
    - Tannehill with nice touch to Jorvorskie Lane (Who?!?) over Cameron Collins (We have another Cameron?!?)
    - Reggie Bush breaking people down again, completely shaking Johathan Freeny who had no chance on this play. Bush shook him before the catch on a cut to the outside, and then immediately shook him again after the catch on a break back towards the inside. Have no idea who this Freeny kid is... but Reggie clowned him.
    - Clay, once again, with a nice catch on those post/seam routes. Only thing I would like to see more from him is to work on becoming a little more sudden in his cuts. But he has no trouble getting down field and catching that ball over his shoulder.

Horn. 11v11s with live blocking! Similarly to earlier in the day, 1st and 2nd team on the left front field, 3rd/4th teams on the right. Trying to keep an eye on both!

    - One of the first plays was a bubble screen out on the right wing to Reggie Bush.
    - Tannehhill with a play action... and the second Tannehill turns around, OVernon is waiting to blow him up b/c he didnt bite. If thats a live play in a game... Tannehill would have gotten decapitated, lol.
    - Daniel Thomas running hard on the left field on an off tackle play to the left
FIGHT! OK, maybe not a big fight, but a couple punches were thrown between Randy Starks and rook Jonathan Martin and Starks was PISSED.
    - Lamar Miller on the right field had a run to the left, however he had a nice cutback to the right and broke off a big gain.
    - Trenton Hughes makes a nice PBU on Marlon Moore from Devlin. Dont know him, but nice coverage here.
    - Tannehill with a PA pass to Rishard Matthews over the middle for 10-15 yards.
    - Miller with another nice run. Stretch like play to the right, where Miller found the seam and cut up for a big gain. He never lost speed looking for the hole or when he hit it. The speed is real, and he never seems to turn it off.
    - Olivier Vernon blows up a running play in the backfield. That boy is big man...
    - Back to the left field... Starks flies in and would have absolutely crushed Moore for the sack if the play were live.
    - Lamar Miller with a VERY nice blitz pickup here, seaking the blitzer smacking him good. Pass to Michael Egnew on an out route for a nice catch that he had to go to the ground for.
    - Moore with a should be pick, but was dropped by Smith
    - Lamar Miller with a run up the gut... fumbles the ball and punches the ground
    - Garrard with deep route to Naanee over Vontae on a fly route down the left sideline for a touchdown
    - Was looking at the right side of the field, when I looked back left and saw Reggie was very slow to get up, and was limping pretty badly. It was pretty worriesome, but he seemed to shake it off and continued practicing and was fine after a bit.
    - Garrard got pressured on a blitz, but he stepped up in the pocket well and made a nice pass to Chad Johnson on the right side.
    - Looking back to the left, and Miller looks completely lost on a blitz pickup... with Tannehill getting smashed.
    - A nice pass squeezed in to Fasano by either Garrard or Moore... but Fasano heard footsteps from a defender in front of him and dropped the ball untouched.

    Punt coverage drill

I didnt take many notes during this segment... but I did write down one thing. Our rookie WRs Matthews and Cunningham were getting the crap kicked out of them while trying to be gunners in these drills. They were just getting crushed by some veterans, including Vontae.

3rd & Short drill while 11v11. Same deal, 1's and 2's front left... 3's and 4's front right.

    - Tanny with a nice pump fake and throw on an out route for 10-12 yards
    - Moore sacked and then throws a pass in the dirt
    - Tanny bought some time sliding and stepping up in the pocket, and then tucked and ran when no one continued to get open.
    - Here is were the reverse to Chad Johnson happened that Reshad Jones blew up.
    - Wake lined up at LDE dipped and turned the corner off the edge for a sack on Moore against Jonathan Martin
    - Garrard similarly to Tanny a few plays prior, tried buying some time sliding in the pocket and then took off when things opened up for about a 15-20 yard nice run.
    - Tannehill with a nice read on an out route to Chris Hogan
    - Daniel Thomas motioned out wide to the left, Moore under pressure throws a poor pass behind the WR (I think Moore? Cant remember), who came up with a phenominal catch.

Some quick 7v7 drills. Tannehill got picked off on back to back passes... but neither was on him. Both were passes that werent caught cleanly by the WR and were tipped up in the air for the INT. First by Messam and then by Wallace (the Wallace one was actually a nice play by the DB, practically scooping the ball off the ground. Dont remember who, but I think it was Culver? Moore made a nice pass on another post/seam to Clay for 20+. And Tannehill with a nice 10 yard out to Rishard Matthews.

Next up was a pretty cool drill. It was basically where a QB gets an entire drive, starting at the 20 or so. 4:30 on the clock (which doesnt stop for any thing), and gives them a drive including going for it on 4th downs. Full 11v11s. But the interesting thing, was that they had crowd noise pumping in loudly on speakers. They even had it get louder as the team broke the huddle and started lining up. Never have I ever seen crowd noise pumped in during practice outside. Was pretty interesting. Dont have all the plays written down as a lot was going on, but tried to get at least most of Tannehill's.

    Moore up first
    - Moore gets sacked
    - Moore throws an out route and should have been picked off by Sean Smith, but he dropped the INT.
    - Messam takes out some Hardknocks cameras on the right sideline. Was worried he got hurt, but shook it off pretty quick.
    - Moore with a should be pick by Vontae, but was also dropped

    Garrard at the helm
    - Nice post route over the middle for 12 yards on 3rd and 8
    - 3rd and 3, nice touch on a deep ball to Marlon Moore on a fly down the right sideline, but didnt get 2 feet in bounds.

    Tannehill's turn
1st and 10 - Boot leg to the right. Nice velocity on the ball while throwing on the run, but got broken up.
False start, didnt see on who
2nd and 15 - Check down to Egnew on an out route for 8 yards
3rd and 7 - poor throw over the middle incomplete

1st down and 10 - Messam up the gut for 4 yards
2nd and 6 - Check down on a drag route to the right to BJ Cunningham for 3 yards. He bobbled the ball and almost dropped it twice, but finally caught it just before getting hit by the DB who was trying to break it up.
3rd and 3 - Nice out for 7 yards for the first down

    And thats the final horn...

Overall, I liked what I saw out of the rookies today like Vernon, Miller, Egnew, and Tannehill. Didnt watch Martin though as much as I was planning to. From the first impression, it appears that we should be getting some production from this rookie class. As far as the often talked about QB position... I will say of the 3 QBs today... I'd have to rank their performances in the following order: Garrard, Tannehill, and then Moore. I can see why Moore is getting defensive over his practices. He isnt very good in practice, lol. Moore was erratic/inconsistant today, with some passes in the dirt and a some too high. His deep ball struggled even in drills, and he threw a couple of passes that should have been intercepted. Garrard looked pretty sharp. He slid around well in the pocket and seemed to find WRs pretty quickly. Ryan had a couple of timing issues on a couple of his throws, but for the most part he displayed good accuracy and velocity.

    Thats all I got! :D

Dropped one today that I saw. He had a pretty good practice though. But both him and Vontae dropped would be INTs from Moore in almost back to back plays.

Thanks Nasty thats good stuff bro..That Rjones play on that reverse was really good, don't know how he recognized that play so quickly, it was a play that I havent seen before, chad was lined up in line next to Martin. He was all over the field today..

I had Tannehill as the most impressive, and started watching him intently, but your right about Garrard when you say he was pretty sharp.

I watched Olivier blow up 3 plays for loss.

I guess I gave Garrard the nod b/c he was going up against the 1s/2s vs the 3s/4s like Tanny. Wouldnt argue with you on it though. The rook was pretty damn impressive...

Today it was him and Garrard... then a gap... then Moore.

Sounds like the QBs got sacked quite a bit, which means the WRs weren't getting open, the QBs weren't getting rid of the ball fast enough, or the OLine was having some trouble over there. Hopefully, it wasn't Jonathan Martin having his *** handed to him.

I also found it funny that Sean Smith kept dropping interceptions lol. I guess somethings never change. He really needs to hit the JUGS machine.

Thanks for the great write up. It was great to read!

I'm glad to hear Messam is showing some things so far, in the CFL he always had the talent but Wally Buono (sort of the leagues' Don Shula) wouldn't put him on the field.

Again, my instinct with Olivier Vernon is to have him play in base defenses, not be a nickel DE rusher as has been suggested. To me, the Dolphins have no nickel rusher aside from Wake.

Not to be an unappreciative ***, but to me it's Sooo obvious you "camp birds" basically waltz to practice pretending to have some dynamic football insight, like your the 2nd comings of Jimmy Johnson or something.

Then you post about the practice when to me it's apparent none of you either A) watch the practice or B) know WHAT your looking at. It's actually a joke that we all have to read COMPLETE BS.

Anyone with two eyes knows for a fact that Sean Smith has never in his life nor ever will drop an interception. You goofballs and your false reporting. :pity:

With the low talent level at WR, Vontae—if he's finally living up to his talent—should be racking up INTs and making tackles left and right. Smith, too.

He's been beaten for 1 TD on a perfect pass..has disrupted multiple passes with keen anticipation and recognition, and their not allowed to tackle so he hasn't launched his body like a missle into anyone yet.

I heard good thing about Marcus Thigpen in OTA's he is one of the CFL to NFLer in my sig pic.

Want to see what he does when the pads come on as I suspect he is going to open some eyes on specials and obviate the need to use Miller on returns which sounds just unwise to me.

nah Des, I just don't think you can get a good handle one way or the other on performance based on his name not being in the reports..Its really kind of weird out there in terms of these practices, I think when it comes to vontae, you expect better play because of more experience, better shape, and more maturity..
