"Vernon's skills are obvious to teammates studying practice film in meeting."

"You see his different moves," Dolphins cornerback Sean Smith said. "He's keeping his pads down, and that's something you don't really see from a guy coming out of college early on."

"I have a lot respect for how he's playing," Long said. "We go hard against each other. I think we're making each other better."

    Fixed it fella :knucks:

This is the best news short of Tannehill dominating. DE is a core position and if we are going to make a 4-3 work we need a DE who will force teams to decide which end to double because its extremely hard to get both. I dont just want Vernon to emerge as a starter, hes got to be a legit stud. Plus the less we see of Odrick or Starks as a DE the better off we will be imo.

What with the glowing reports on Vernon and also Westerman, it would be great if that allowed us to rotate Odrick mainly with Starks and Soliai. I won't be a bit surprised if Vernon ends up as the starting RDE in our 4-3. That would be perfect if he can win that job.

I mentioned after the signing how I felt Westerman was a good signing. His ratio of snaps to Pressure/Sack/Hurry is pretty good. Granted hes a reserve but you want reserves that can generate a pass rush.

If Ireland hits this freakin draft right, we're gonna be a nice young football team on the rise.

So far with our first 5 picks, I feel like he may have actually done it, we get a few more of those and we are going to be a threat for a while in the league

If our first 5 are hits, this would be one of the GOAT Drafts in the league. I've called for not jumping to blast Ireland more than anyone....but hitting big on the first 5 just doesn't seem likely.

Hold up folks, we've all been around long enough to know it takes time and pressure to see who is who.

I do like the more athletic approach to things and feel this is one area where Parcell's blueprint went awry, Bills had high picks for yrs, Pats had a mtn of draft picks, the solution was not to go big and maul them it was to out athleticism them imo.

Best game plan in the world cannot account for a player showing that sort of athletic ability, who would you rather have running through the secondary on a draw, Ronnie B or Reggie or Lamar?

Interestingly enough, Westerman's younger brother was highly drafted by my BC Lions.

With Wake and 2 quality, penetrating DTs in Starks & Odrick next to Vernon and us running a more attacking D this year, I could really see him picking up 8-10 sacks as a rookie.

Not LDE? I'd rather Wake not be covered by a TE since his best move is the speed rush outside.

    10-12? :shifty:

I'm not sure how you feel, BKP, but I'm optimistic our secondary will be better than it was the 2nd half of last season, especially with Coyle in charge of it.
A year more seasoned Vontae, Smith, Carroll, and Marshall will hopefully be better than 2011 Vontae, Smith, Allen, Carroll, and Allen.
The better physically conditioned 2012 Dansby & Burnett should be better in coverage than 2011 Dansby & Burnett.
A year more seasoned Clemons & RJ should be better than 2011 RJ & the coverage liability Bell, no?

At least I hope it plays out this way.
Even if it's a minimal improvement across the board, we'd be in a decent defensive position would we not?

THere is certainly potential, but question marks. Will Marshall fit in smoothly in his role here, and the environment? Hope so. I've heard SO little about Vontae this camp, save him being beaten once or twice (no big deal), that I can only hope I am safe assuming he's doing fine. I do expect Sean SMith to have taken a step.

But Safety? Man. I'm not so sure. Rashad Jones plays better coming forwards than heading back into disciplined coverage, and I doubt his instincts and angles while the ball is airborne and after it's caught. To be honest, I'm hoping Jimmy wilson can outplay what we can reasonably expect from him... because I don;t hold much hope that CLemons will be anything more than we've seen before.

Definitely think the LB corps will play the pass better this year, and suspect a LOT more zone cover underneath than last year when man cover on the TE's was MURDERING us.

Still, a lot remains to be seen. If teams like the Pats spread us, and we go with 4 CBs, is Nolan Carroll really good enough? I don;t think so. Smart, yes, but still makes too many mistakes and doesn't cut on a dime (no short area quicks) and sometimes he just seems clueless as to the ball's whereabouts despite all that purported intelligence of his.

So, no I'm not as confident in the secondary as you are.

But I think if Olivier is half of what we are hoping, and Cam is Cam then we'll be okay.

I second that eruption, MrC that sig is making me feel like I'm not 60.

What really excites me, aside from MrC's sig, is we seem to be shaping up such a strong defensive line, that our new DC Coyle is going to be free to teach-up the secondary (his specialty) and could make our D a top 5 unit in the entire NFL, not just the AFC, but these DL and good linebackers of which I'm certain we have minimally two of plus Misi seems poised to take a huge step forward this season (just my gut feeling, no fact or link to back it up). Then given Coyle's record at developing the secondary, our D could be flat out NASTY on passing plays if Misi, Burnett (SP?), and Dansby can drop when needed and cover top-tier TEs.

Wake played LDE in the CFL and seems to have spent most of his time at LDE and IMO appears more comfortable there since he has been with the Dolphins. We have also heard that Vernon has been going against Jake, which means he has been getting work at RDE.

    All very good points, BPK.
I think Smith is the defender I have the most excited anticipation about seeing this year (next Brandon Browner perhaps?). What about you?

    {However, I think this is the year we could see a lot of guys take an impressive step forward in a way the NFL typically doesn't see..... Starks back to Pro Bowl form, Wake again, Odrick breaking out, Dansby & Burnett with their best seasons to date, Vontae finally becoming the stud he's flashed, Rashad breaking out by midseason, Misi breaking out in his altered role, Vernon having an All Rookie Team performance. I just think Vernon will put up some decent sack numbers simply b/c of the guys next to him and Vontae, Sean, and Marshall tightening up the coverage. In a different situation I might not be as optimistic, perhaps just 4-5 sacks.}
