Sorry for the delay in getting this written up. First time I'm getting to sit down at a computer after a full day. I almost missed the practice! I woke up at 8 and fired up my computer to do one more final check to make sure it was at the stadium and not at the Davie facility... and saw that the practice was moved up to 8:15! I flew out of the house and down to the stadium, but I didnt end up missing anything other than stretching and stuff.

I'll tell you what, today was fast paced man. It was hard to keep up! I'm sitting here trying to take notes, and I could barely get something on the paper before the next play. I started off trying to write down formations and after about 2 plays I had to bail on that, lol. I think I might have to take a page from DJ's book with the recorder. This pace is hard man...

    Anyway, lets get to it!

    7 v 7's

    - Moore started off the bat with CJohnson and Naanee at WR and Jorvorskie Lane and Reggie Bush. Moore with a 15 yard out to CJohnson.
    - Clay gets in on the 2nd rep. Moore throws an out to Fasano for 8 yards.
    - Egnew gets in on the 3rd rep. CJohnson ran a post over the middle but it was broken up. The pass didnt have much of a chance for completion.
    - Moore thows to Naanee but is incomplete.

    - Garrard comes in...
    - Quick comeback to the left side of the field to Marlon Moore for around 7 yards.
    - Garrard with a checkdown to Egnew to the left
    - Another checkdown to Charles Clay. Clay makes a nice diving catch here.
    - Garrard throws deep to Pruitt (I think?) but goes incomplete.

    - Tannehill comes in.
    - First pass, 17 pump fakes and then throws a fantastic 25 yard back shoulder throw to Marlon Moore along the left sideline. This drew some pretty loud cheers from the crowd.
    - Ryan checks down to Messam in the middle.
    - Tannehill throws a 15 yard out to Naanee on the right sideline.
    - Checks down to Charles Clay for 5 yards in the flat.

    - Devlin comes in (I honestly didnt take a ton of notes when he was in throughout practice. Used the time to relax for a second from scrambling like a madman, lol)
    - Devlin throws a pass to Pruitt over the middle for 15 yards or so.
    - Checks down to Thigpen.

    Scrimmage starts

    - Before the scrimmage started... I see Chad Johnson take a knee next to some sound equipment about 20 yards in front of me. Then, a trainer follows him over and starts holding up a towel... then another. Yep, I've seen Chad Johnson urinate. Oh the joys of training camp, lol.
    - Thigpen was the the starting KR man in this drill.
    - 1st & 10 - Garrard starts off the scrimmage taking possession on his own 30 yard line. Strong I formation, motions Bess from the left side to the right side of the formation, Quick out to Bess for 8 yards.
    - 2nd & 2 - Shotgun 2 wide, and we run a draw play to Reggie for 4 yards and the 1st down.
    - 1st & 10 - 3 wide. Derrick Shelby beats JMartin for the sack, loss of 2.
    - 2nd & 12 - False start
    - 2nd & 17 - Snap over Garrard's head. Garrard grabs it and quickly checks it to Reggie for 3 yards.
    - 3rd & 14 - Garrard throws a nice deep dig route to Naanee for 20 yards. Looked to either be intercepted or broken up, but Naanee leaped over the defender (Carrol or Culver?) and snatched it away from him for the 1st down.
--- Side note here. Naanee has been pretty impressive in the 2 practices I've seen. I remembered him from the Chargers, and knew he was a pretty big WR... but the thing that has really surprised me about him is his speed. Not on this particular play, but I've seen him get behind the defense multiple times... and for a WR that big, he is a really interesting player. I'm really curious as to how he will look in preseason as a starter.
    - 1st & 10 - Bubble screen for no gain.
    - 2nd & 10 - DThomas runs hard for 7 yards or so
    - 3rd & short - DThomas runs off right tackle for the 1st down
    - 1st & 10 around the 25 yard line - Garrard tucks it and runs for about 3 yards.
    - 2nd & 7 - Reggie Bush off right tackle for around 3 yards.
    - 3rd and 4 - 15 yard post to CJohnson over the middle near the goal line, but he drops it. I happened to see before the snap that Olivier Vernon was lined up on Jake Long, so I watched. Well, welcome to the NFL rook... meet a future HoFer. Jake absolutely burries Vernon into the ground, lol.
    - Field goal

-Lamar Miller sets to return the kickoff, and has a fantastic return flashing that speed. His return at minimum is taken out to the 45, and would have possibly gone all the way pending on whether Carpenter would have been able to make the tackle (play got blown dead before it finished).
    - 1st & 10 - Moore checks in. Hand off to Miller up the gut for 3 yards.
    - 2nd & 7 - Moore throws it away sailing it out of bounds to the left.
    - 3rd & 7 - Shotgun 3 wide - Seam pass to Clay but was broken up by Burnett.
    - Punt. Thigpen as the PR man. Fields drops it on the 2 yard line with help from Pruitt as the gunner.
    - Moore back to his own 30 yard line.
    - 1st & 10 - Moore's pass batted at the LOS.
    - 2nd & 10 - Checkdown to Egnew to the right for 8 yards. Hard collision with the defender.
    - 3rd & 2 - Moore throws to Mastrud in the right flat for the 1st down.
    - 1st & 10 - Messam up the gut for 2 yards.
    - 2nd & 10 - Moore gets sacked (Misi?)
    - 3rd & long - Shotgun 3 wide - Checkdown to Messam on a swing pass in the left flat.
    - Punt

    - 1st & 10 - Moore back to the 30. Rollout to the right, throws it out of bounds.
    - 2nd & 10 - Screen pass to the right to Thigpen for 6 yards.
--- At this point I had to get some water and Moore wasnt playing well. But I took the above play down from the tunnel, ran and quickly bought a bottle of water. It was freaking HOT! I was told Moore threw it into the ground on 3rd down for the 3&out.

...and Tannehill trots onto the field. He takes the field with the 1st team offense, but I believe was facing the 2nd team defense.
    - 1st & 10 - Play action, deep pass to the left to Naanee who got behind the defense. Tannehill puts some touch on it and tries to drop it in the breadbasket. Beautiful trajectory to drop it in, but just a hair off on the accuracty just out of Naanee's reach. If Tannehill hits that pass... the stadium would have come down, lol.
    - 2nd & 10 - Tannehill throws deep again this time down the right side to Chad Johnson, but CJ got held and interfered with. However, the offense didnt advance b/c there was an offsetting penalty, I believe holding?
    - 2nd & 10 - Shotgun 4 wide - Quick hook to CJ for 5 yards.
    - 3rd & 5 - Shotgun 4 wide - Tannehill spots a blitzer, and runs back up to the LOS calling him out to the OL. Drops back and throws a quick slant to Pruitt for 4 yards who is just short of the 1st down.
    - Punt

    - Back to the 30 yard line for 17.
    - 1st & 10 - Play action rollout to the left, throws to Clay for about 20 yards.
    - 1st & 10 - Tannehill hurries up the offense (notes got tough here, lol) to the LOS, quick snaps and throws a short pass to Bess for 7 yards.
    - 2nd & 3 - Tannehill throws a hook to Bess for around 15 yards.
    - 1st & 10 from the opposing 28 - Draw up the gut to Miller for a yard.
    - 2nd & 9 - Playaction, rolls out right. Derrick Shelby is closing in on him but Tannehill runs and turns the corner on him... and then throws an absolutely BEAUTIFUL pass on the run, putting perfect touch on the ball lofting it over the LB and right into Fasano's basket who was running a corner route. Got it in there right at the pylon. This was the best pass of the day for any QB. The stadium went wild. It was the entire package of a play. Throwing on the run, touch, accuracy, touchdown.

    Starting at the opponents 25

    Moore first
    - 1st & 10 - A 2 wide, 0 TE, 2 FB, 1 RB formation. Dont know the hard name of this one, but I've seen it used a few times in my 2 practices. It looks like this:
We of course are using TEs in these FB positions, guys like Egnew and Clay. Slaton runs off left tackle in this play for 2 yards.
    - 2nd & 8 - Quick out in the flat to Mastrud for 4 yards
    - 3rd & 4 - Sacked (didnt see who)
    FG

    Garrard in now
    - 1st & 10 - Checkdown in the left flat to Clay for no gain. Guyton on the stop.
    - 2nd & 10 - Garrard was either sacked here, or the refs let him get a shovel pass off here for NG.
    - 3rd & 10ish - Heavy blitz including the strong side safety (right side of the offense). Garrard backs up quickly from the snap and throws a pass off his back foot to CJohnson in the corner down to the 12 yard line. Nice play by Garrard here.
    - 1st & 10 - Play action roll out to the left to Naanee for 3 yards who I believe was on a drag route from right to left.
    - 2nd & 7 - Incomplete pass to Naanee
    - 3rd & 7 - Throws into double coverage to Chad Johnson which goes incomplete
    FG

Tannehill's turn - 2nd team offense... first team defense. And its going to show... lol
    - 1st & 10 - Wake almost sacks Tannehill who steps up just in time to avoid Wake. However, he didnt have his feet set on his throw and threw a pretty ugly duck of a pass into double coverage I believe to CJohnson. Tannehill was lucky this didnt get picked.
    - 2nd & 10 - Checkdown to Messam who gets drilled by either Misi or Guyton
    - 3rd & long - Botched shotgun snap and sacked.
    - FG attempt... I think Carpenter missed this one?

    Goal line work

    Moore
    - I missed a rep or 2 of Moore's here, had to get another water. From my understanding it was 2 runs up the gut which got stuffed.
    - Pass to Fasano over the middle for the TD

    Garrard
    - 1st & Goal from the 1 - Play is play action roll out to the left, and Garrard hits Naanee for the TD.
    - 1st & Goal from the 1 - Run up the gut stuffed
    - 2nd & goal from the 1 - Garrard throws it out of the back of the endzone
    - 3rd & goal from the 1 - Sweep to the right to Miller for no gain
    - 4th & goal from the 1 - Miller up the gut but stuffed.

    Situational Football

Moore is down 6, 2 minutes left on his own 20. Need a TD.
    - 1st & 10 - Shotgun 4 wide - Out to Naanee for 6 yards.
    - 2nd & 4 - Over the middle to Fasano for 4 yards and the 1st down.
    - 1st & 10 - Over the middle to Naanee for 7 yards.
    - 2nd & 3 - Deep down the left sideline to Naanee, but he was overthrown.
    - 3rd & 3 - Incomplete pass intended to Bess. I believe Richard Marshall broke it up...
    - 4th & 3 - Stacked WRs to the right - CJ runs a comeback for 10 yards and the 1st
    - 1st & 10 - Spike the ball
    - 2nd & 10 - Incomplete pass down the seam to Bess. Seemed like a miscommunication here, not sure who was at fault. Vernon dropped into coverage here.
    - 3rd & 10 - Sacked by Wake. Wake turned the corner on Martin.
    - 4th & 15 - Moore hurries to the line and spikes the ball. Seriously.

Garrard's turn and he takes over the 2nd team offense on the 30, down 1 point with 1:21 left on the clock.
    - 1st & 10 - Out to BJ Cunningham that goes incomplete
    - 2nd & 10 - Derrick Shelby gets the sack, beating Andrew McDonald
    - 3rd & long - Checkdown to Les Bron
    - 4th & 11 - Shotgun 3 wide - Out pass to Rishard Matthews incomplete

Tannehill's turn, taking over at his own 20. No particular situation that I can tell.
    - 1st & 10 - Tannehill calling out and making adjustments at the LOS. Audibles the play/formation. Incomplete pass to the right.
    - 2nd & 10 - Sacked by Cameron Collins I believe
    - 3rd & 17 - Messam motioned out wide pre-snap. Bubble screen to Messam for the first down (I thought Messam was short but they appeared to give it to him)
    - 1st & 10 - Tannehill fires a strike to Bess on a well timed deep comeback for 25 yards.

Devlin takes over from Tannehill at this point in the drive.
    - 1st & 10 - Miller up the gut for 8 yards
    - 2nd & 2 - Miller up the gut for another 8 yards again, this time with a fake reverse look by the offense.
    - 1st & 10 - Play action sack by Jamaal Westerman
    - 2nd & 20 - Good throw to Thigpen for 20 yards down the middle... but Culver drills him in the back and breaks the pass up.
    - 3rd & 20 - Deep left pass to Rishard Matthews. The ball was underthrown but was a good adjustment and catch by Matthews.
    - 1st & 10 on the 17 - Quick pass to Messam in the middle for 8 yards.
    - 2nd & 2 - QB draw for no gain.
    - 3rd & 2 - Touchdown pass to Rishard Matthews on an out route to the left.

And thats the final horn! Sorry again for the delay getting this posted. Didnt get some time to myself to sit down and write all of this until after the wife passed out, lol!

Great report. Thank you for taking so much time and effort to be detailed. I love it.

    Sounds like:
    - Martin's not great, but not glaringly bad (so he's better than Columbo then)
    - Vernon has growing to do

I'm concerned by our run game, especially on the goal line. I want to observe that closely in the first preseason game.

Spike on 4th down.....LOL I did that once in Madden when I just needed a FG to win the game from like the 15 yard line.

Thanks for the detailed report. Great work.

Surprised you didn't try to lob it to one of your eight foot tall 44 OVR rated wideouts anyways.

You're one GM who didn't care that Taurean Barclay's mom was the busiest whore in 8 Mile.

I can only imagine they'll show that on Hard Knocks. Tannehill seemed much more impressive through Nasty's report than reading over Twitter accounts... then again he was going up against the second team defense for the most of the scrimmage with the first team offense, I think.

Now that was a Sunday morning golden nugget of info, appreciate that Nasty..

Two sacks and a pressure by Ck's dark horse sleeper, Derrick Shelby...that's a hell of a call if he makes the team.

Jon Martin giving up two..my concerns with him were pass protection related.

I was a fan of Lagadu when he was a charger, always noticing his game, haven't followed him or watched any tape from his past two years, but I know I liked him back in the day.

Bess seems to be topping his routes off deeper, especially the comebacks, I believe this is attributed to his lighter and faster body.

Nasty?, can you talk about Tannehills trajectory and touch..Some folks had concerns about this when he came out, some calling him "Henne like"and whatnot?

No pun intended..That defense is "nasty"

I don't feel like we have to babysit Tannehill because of his inexperience, or a certain protocol that ensures better odds of success, I think with our team specifically, we need his dynamics as a player to elevate the offense..That running and throwing talent, that moving pocket stuff can become a weapon that will be missing if it's not him under center..

I would like to say again, that i have no problem giving the vet the chance to get us to a 4 and 2 record at the bye, any worse, than we go T-hill to see if he can save a season and give him something to play for.

Some would consider such a delay, a consequential trade-off for a wife who has no problem with you, taking off on a Saturday morning/afternoon, to watch football during the off-season.

I'd definitely have to say that Naanee has been the guy that has most surprised me. I honestly thought he would be a guy competing for a roster spot... not looking like he deserves to be a starter. I didnt realize what kind of speed the guy had. Thought he'd be a big possession type (which he is)... but didnt think he'd be able to get behind defenses, which hes done multiple times in the 2 practices I've been to.

They ran that a lot in GB. I like the formation. But it requires a true FB IMO. Without reading the entire report from nasty...what 3 players were in the backfield?

Martin is just getting beat by that patented corner dip that Wake is so nasty at. Off the top of my head, the only guy I can recall beating Martin ever is Wake (I just woke up, so bear with me if incorrect, lol). Its just a tough matchup for a rook... but he isnt getting ragdolled out there or anything either. But occasionally, Wake will show him whats up.

I dont know if Vernon has any "growing" to do, the kid is huge, lol. I honestly couldnt focus on the defense as much yesterday, but Vernon didnt flash as much today as he did last Sunday. The only 2 plays I actually took a second to focus on he got buried by a HoFer and then dropped into coverage, lol... so not a great sample to gauge him on.

And I'm not super encouraged by our run game either. But it was more goal line work where it struggled (which could have to do with our DLine as well). Between the 20's we seemed to run pretty decently. I have a feeling this offense will be pretty pass heavy though, with short passes supplimenting some of the run game.

Again, Martin is going up against your boy Kracken... so there is a curve there. There arent too many pass rushers like him, lol. Its got to be good for him to face that every day though.

Bess does seem to be doing more seam work this year. Hes getting into the intermediate stuff more and not just the underneath.

Tannehill definitely understands the concept of touch, which is more than I could say for Henne. I'm still holding back on Tanny though. Again, he's really only been facing the 2nd team defense... which IMO is a stark difference than the real thing. The only time he faced the 1st team D, he got his *** handed to him, lol (but to be fair, was going with the 2nd team O). I'm ok with it though. Get him comfortable and confident against the 2nd team, then slowly work him against the 1st team. I want to continue to slowly work him. We have nothing to rush for. Nothing. At some point, he'll get some action during the season... but I dont think we should be putting him in until hes just kicking the door down and its impossible to hold him back anymore.

I cant recall him making any plays during the scrimmage... but he looks pretty good in drills and such. I think he has a decent shot to make the team. I'd think him and Wallace would be battling out for that roster spot.

Not a wishbone. In the wishbone the full back directly behind the QB is closest of the 3 to the QB, with the two RBs to either side, both back a step depth wise from the FB

Legedu ran a 4.41 forty and had a 40" vertical, weighing 226 lbs at the 2007 combine. He went to college as a QB and was converted to WR there. Perhaps, he is still growing in that craft?

It has the same backfield as a 'full house' formation, except with 2 wideouts instead of 2 TEs. I've seen it called a 'diamond' and an 'inverted wishbone' formation.

The term wishbone pertains to the 3 backs behind the QB aligning in the shape of a wishbone. The two ends could either be split or tight. Like I said to Al, that wasn't a wishbone because the back directly behind the QB was deeper than the other two. Like someone else said, that would be a diamond. The fullback has to be nearest the QB and right behind him to be a wishbone. Then when they'd run the triple option, the FB dive was the always the first option.

I think that used to be the most common term for the formation in Nasty's post, in the days when the regular wishbone was so prevalent.

thanks for clearing this up, i thought as soon as a combination of 3 RB/FB are behind the QB its automatically a wishbone, although i heard it called full house too, like Larry called it as well

Ya, I didnt know that about him, had no idea. Thats really interesting man. I'm becoming more intreagued about his performance/development than probably anyone not named Tannehill. The impact he could make if he panned out would be greater than almost any other player on our team IMO, due to the lack of talent at the position.

Gotcha, thanks. I'm going to go with the Diamond formation from now on. I'm curious as to how we are going to use it this season. With H-Back/flex type players, it has the ability to create some interesting mis-matches...

Having 3 backs lined up with and deeper than the QB in the backfield, is generally all considered a full house backfield, but I think of a full house as the 3 backs all at basically even depth. The variations off that, such as the wishbone, diamond, or "I" all having their own names. That's how I think of it anyway. If alen1 were here, I'm sure he could give more clarity.

I agree that this formation is at its best when you have a FB with some hands and running ability too.

I've generally seen that formation referred to as a "Full House". The Packers have pretty frequently used it in the McCarthy years, and I at very least like it because it suggests to me that Philbin has had a hand in the offense instead of Sherman simply converting his offense. The Packers offense did a lot of stuff with fullbacks/H-backs, including stuff like this:

Two fullback shotgun formations. Which is I think why they're looking at converted halfbacks like Messam/Lane, and may continue to use Clay pretty heavily in the backfield.

There's also a bit about the Packers use of the formation here:

A pretty good rule of thumb for our offense is that if the Packers did it, we likely will too.

That link covers the Packers' use of the full house, although the photo here is not full house because their is a flanker (back) in the slot to the right.

I wish we could give Nasty more than just a fist bump for that work! Between the updates and his avatar he does so much for us!
