Yeah man it started happening to me a couple weeks ago. I have been using their site for years and now it says I reached my maximum

views all of sudden and this green screen pops up saying I have to pay to view. Sometimes it doesn't show up but it usually does.

They'll need to go HuffingtonPost style with their content to get enough viewers that they can sell advertising.

I don't know why people are getting up in arms about it. It's irritating, but newspapers clearly haven't worked out a successful business model for their online content yet.

The quality of reporting and discourse will plummet for awhile until educated people find the higher quality online news sources worth paying for.

The issue is, Sun Sentinel used to compete in quality with local papers, but now, online, the audience can choose any paper in the world to read and the standard of competition for paid service must be way higher.

This **** ain't competing against the penny saver.

They tried to be a pay site a few years ago which is probably why they are top heavy with writers. Now they are probably trying to pay their salaries since most news outfits are losing revenue streams.

If it doesnt work I am guessing there will be some downsizing involved .

Not really... people have stopped buying newspapers all over the world now because of the internet. How else are they supposed to make money? It was only a matter of time before this started to happen.

I work in the newspaper industry, albeit in Canada, and circulation is certainly down but nowhere near as much as advertising revenue. This pay per view has started with a lot of papers and is a trend that will continue to make the print industry sustainable. It sucks but that's the world we live in now.

Whoever gets the message that they have to pay: try this.

Most browsers have a "private browsing" or an "incognito browsing" option. Try to view content like that in private browsing. Private browsing doesn't use a cache or keep track of cookies, so unless the SS is tracking views by IP address, you should be in the clear.

If that doesn't work, you can do a google search for what's called a "proxy." Essentially, a proxy is a legal way for you to browse the internet without telling websites what your IP address is. Due to your privacy as a US citizen, you are free to do this as you please. Be careful which ones you choose though, because some of them have lots of popups or spyware.

They did their pay wall on the cheap, lots of ways around it like those mentioned above. Also on things like iPads it's even easier if you use reader etc.

This is happening all over the country. The Clarionledger in Jackson and Hattiesburg American in Hattiesburg will start charging after an initial number of viewing starting now. Newspapers are in some serious trouble and a number of papers in Mississippi have gone belly up in the last year.

    Greed???

It's the only way newspapers will survive.
Online content has eaten away at subscribership for years now.
This shouldn't be a shock at all.
It's the same content people paid for before so why should it be different online?

We have been spoiled as a society by getting all this great stuff for free for the last ten plus years. That is the biggest problem with the newspaper industry, they could not conceive how big this internet thing would be, so they didn't have the foresight to put paywalls up at the beginning. And you know what, you can't blame them for the path they took then, nor can you the path they take now.

I fear newspaper is already dead, the tablet PC's are sounding the death kneel and once the last generations start dieing out, there will not be any brand loyalty . . . in fact we will have entire generations who never picked up a newspaper. And my friends, this is not a problem just for newspapers, you all know I work in TV . . . well we all are scrambling from the networks to local stations to keep ourselves relevant in an age where you can stream shows online a day after they air or get your local news on your time.

Ten years from now, the media will look radically different than it does now, and that scares the ever loving crap out of me . . . but yeah, its now about the livelihoods of thousands of professionals, it's just greed.

If you think you are getting something for free, you are the commodity, not the customer.
